Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

Yay!

Instead of speculating whether or not an account will be locked to a machine, we can now speculate if multiple accounts will be locked to a machine!

They shouldn't be.
From the sounds of it, you'll be able to load your account to your controller and take it to a friend's house.

Either way, you'll be able to access your account on a variety of platforms. PCs, Cellphones, ect.

Make it matte black, and you have a winner

now THAT'S a great use of NFC. Why did I even consider that!

WHAT THE FUCK GAF

I go offline for the latter part of the day thinking I'd get a tidbit or hint here and there and play through some old games, next thing you know Nintendo wants to go and drop the Spirit Bomb 45 episodes before they were scheduled to...

Multiple accounts per system? DLC confirmed? First party DLC in titles that make sense? 2D Mario for 3DS? NFC? Communities on a system wide basis? User to user communications and sharing? Third parties coming on board in stride? Digital distribution of packaged software?

This is not Nintendo. Fuck outta here, you're lying to me. :lol

Can someone explain what NFC is and how would that make things better?

NFC allows for the connection of devices and such instantly.
Credit cards, toys, gadgets.
Basically they could allow for a wide variety of different things to be done on the system without needing any special hardware.

Can you give a gaming example of how this could be used? I'm stil confused.

pokemon trading cards that are instantly recognized by the system, allowing you to either play the trading card game virtually with actual cards or import pokemon you buy into your game.

Take the new Spyro game.
You know how it uses that little plastic portal and the toys to transport them into the game?
Well, the Wii U can do that without the need for the portal.
Just buy the toy, have it near the Wii U, and bam, it's in the game.
Now, imagine they do that for a Pokemon game.
You get a toy, have it near the Wii U, and it's now a part of your team.

I guess buying through a credit card will be a faster process now.

That is pretty awesome. Sort of like the e-reader, but better.

Yeah I think, it would be an interesting way to tie in DLC with physical properties.
Could actually help retail stores as well.

Was thinking less practical but cool uses
Like if they went with an app store or something
Could be used to download digital versions of comics on your Wii U without inputting a code or something.

Alright. Can this also happen:

Say, I bought the latest Nintendo Power issue. I can just have it near Wii U so I can actually read it on my TV/UPad?

I'm sure that the NFC module(s) will be on the controller itself, not the console.

That is assuming your credit card also has NFC

most do nowadays. It's known as paypass or blink.

Anywho,
Iwata said:
We are planning to showcase the final format and discuss the details at E3 2012, which will be held in Los Angeles in the United States in June this year.

Also, soon after the E3 show, we would like to organize an opportunity in Tokyo where we can showcase the same to the Japanese wholesalers and financial analysts who cannot attend the E3 show.

As for the launch timing, we have so far stated that it shall be sometime between the E3 show and the end of this calendar year, and…

Today, I’d like to confirm that we will launch the Wii U in Japan, the U.S., Europe and Australia in time for the year-end sales season.

For the launch of new hardware, it is, of course, regarded as a sort of requisite not to miss the critical year-end sales season. The company is aiming to firmly complete the development of the entire system and prepare sufficient software so that the Wii U will be at its best at the time of the launch. Needless to say, we have learned a bitter lesson from the launch of the Nintendo 3DS.

nothin really new *shrugs*

Reading/buying the content makes sense.

NFC-enabled magazines though is a big stretch. Although one-offs to just unlock something in a key game isn't out of the question.

If Nintendo were to make a deal with NP and ONM to include these into each magazine for like say...
Exclusive content as well as a digital copy of it.
Imagine how well that could go.

That's all better handled just by subscriptions, with user accounts just push the magazine out to the Wii U automatically. Ready to read. Buying a magazine just to then trigger a download is an unnecessary step. A Christmas issue unlocking something maybe.

NFC is definitely aimed at the Pokemon side of things, the boardgame aspect of the Wii U which I'm sure we'll see more of at E3. Placing cards on the controller to register them maybe.

Chip in the bar code, or the camera has a QR code reader app that unlocks the tablet version of the e-zine. This gives also unlocks exclusive game demos or trailers of future games.

It's theoretically possible, but there are better ways of handling that. For printed purposes a QR Code key would probably work better.

My biggest concern with this feature, and that depends on how its integrated into the system, is this being used as a form of DRM. This is kind of how I imagined that rumor about the Xbox 720 using anti-used game technology would be done.

Oh shit!

Hadn't thought about that, that makes perfect sense unfortunately. Automatically lock a game to a console :/

As much as every developer would love to do that and end used game sales forever... I don't think it'll happen.
The backlash, especially in Japan, would be huge.

It would be a really interesting way of validating discs. Imbed a Near Field device into the disc itself, and verify it before trusting the disc enough to boot it as a game. Of course this assumes that the console itself doesn't get rooted.

But like the first thought at the 720 rumour, if it's an industry wide thing people would have to lump it.

It is a very neat, if brutal, solution to it.

I feel.... vindicated in some way.

Nintendo Network not a re-brand of WFC. My body was ready. Because I believed. And ShockingAlberto is breathing a sigh of relief that I didn't ask for a ban bet like I wanted to. ;)

From the announcement, it seems like these accounts will be tied to their current sharing structure like StreetPass, so you can share "Accomplishments" and other cool stuff. I'm really into this and there's SO much that can be done with it, too, like Mii accessories won via Accomplishments, seeing your friends playing WiiU games on the 3DS so you know to join them online when you get home, etc. It's what Live on Windows Phone could have been if people, y'know, actually bought Windows Phones.

And it has a leg-up feature on PSN and Live if they really are able to do digital distro of boxed retail games.

One other thing.... could the NFC function be there to avoid retained billing info in accounts? NFC is super-common in mobile phones in Japan, and we're seeing it here a lot too. But to basically require billing info on every purchase so it's not stored in your account would be awesome as a security measure.

Probably already stated, but...

When they say digital distro of boxed retail, do they mean a downloadable version of that game, or you can buy a physical copy directly from the system and have it shipped to you?

Hope so.

That's what they meant.

That sounds pretty nice, and most likely the route I would take. Being Nintendo though, I'm sure their will be questions as to if you can re-download them on the Wii U2 once it releases. I don't care about it, but it's understandable I suppose. People like super back-compatibility.

Edit: Actually, now I'm really worried about not having a sleep mode. Being able to preorder a game and have it auto download while your console is in sleep mode so its ready for you once you get ready to play it would be the best thing ever. You can't already do this one PSN/Live right?
