Pro Tip to new people: Pick Anti Mage. You can't lose with him!

I can't tell if that is in-joke sarcasm, but I will keep it in mind!

There's a practice mode with bots, but unfortunately the tutorials haven't been implemented yet.

These two guides are helpful at explaining the game though, but can be a bit overwhelming:

http://www.playdota.com/guides/masterjas-total-newbie-guide

http://www.playdota.com/guides/welcome-to-dota-you-suck

That is awesome. Thanks Nirolak. I'm a little drunk right now, but I will try to get a handle of this game. :P

Yeah just a warning, if you are new to Dota, its best you avoid the inhouses. Heck I'm avoiding them as well for the sake of my own sanity

So can Clinkz replace Drow Ranger on all these "Heroes for newbies to pick up at first" list?

Jesus he's so easy to play. Way easier to last hit as well due to the bonus of Searing Arrows.

He should be easier to play. He actually has a skill to escape. Instead of just kiting your opponents with frost arrows, invisibility is more reliable.

In actuality you will want to try someone who isn't flagged as a "Carry", but rather a "Support", as they don't require a huge amount of items to be effective.

Some easier starter heroes are (regardless of flag) Skeleton King, Tidehunter, and Lion, though that first one can be a bit less effective if you're not farming a lot.

Hooray! I got in the beta!

Now the real question is, who is the easiest to use?

Coming from LoL and a very little bit of HoN, I do not know who to use! (But in HoN, I did enjoy using Succubus...so is there anyone like that?)

I don't know if new players with appreciate this, since they might be really boring at first, but http://www.youtube.com/user/PurgeGamers?feature=g-user-u this is a useful channel to watch someone play.

Watch Gameplay commentaries if you want to know what a Dota player thinks about while playing.

Edit:

I don't know about Lion. He has to keep an eye on his mana and get items for mana so he can stun effectively. I'd say Lich is perfect, since you can sacrifice your own creeps for mana. Just have to keep an eye out for when to use your ultimate attack. Use it where a bunch of people are together (same goes for Tidehunter if you choose to play him).

Also word of advice, if you don't know what to buy, just click on the shop tab and click on the recommended items. When you get to the bottom list, more powerful items, just ask someone on your team what you should go for.

Succubus is Bane Elemental in Dota, who is not implemented yet. Who else did you like in HoN?

+1

Seriously, some of you ragers need to calm the heck down. Some of you play as if there is money on the line.

Hey guys,

Just got my beta invite tonight. I'm really excited to play, but I know nothing about DOTA games. Is there a tutorial/bots training mode? I'm looking to actually learn the game before I fuck up constantly online. :P

I'd recommend starting here and reading the guide pages on the right hand side. I was in the same boat as you coming in, never touched a MOBA before and had absolutely no idea what I was doing, and those helped me understand some of the more basic game systems.

Also I would recommend checking out some replays in-game. Go to the Watch tab and then filter High skill level, then pick someone that did well during the game, put on their player perspective camera and just watch what they do for a full game.

True to some degree, however I would try to go into matchmaking with teams of GAFfers. Premade teams always tend to do better than completely random teams.

There's surely enough new people that some sort of Newbie Inhouse can be made. Like 6-8 fresh meat, 1-2 newish and 2 sympathetic medium dudes that would act as mentors for the time being. Cause really, bots are good to practice last hitting on creeps but that's it. And Matchmaking is a cesspool, and regular Inhouses are saltmines.

I'd be one of these sympathetic medium dudes, not tonight though, but I should be on tommorow afternoon. I'm totally cool with trying to set such an learning friendly inhouse up if there's enough people up for it then.

Don't ever play GAF Inhouses they are the worst. Random pubbies are actually nicer.

If you want to get yelled at through a mic, then yeah :P

Both are pretty bad. You're either getting stomped or getting stomped while being called homophobic remarks with people you will probably never ever see again.

Finally got into the beta tonight! Glad to see I'm not the only one in here without much Dota experience. I've only played maybe 10 games of HoN, so we'll see how this goes.

So the game crashes every time I hit the options menu. Anyone else had that problem?

Edit: I'm an idiot. Was hitting the exit button instead.

I got into the beta about a month ago, have played about a dozen games against AI and watched a crapload of Purge videos, and I'm at the point where I can generally understand why people are doing what they're doing but when it's me playing I just have no clue. Are we done laning? Should I join that group of dudes to go push or should I keep farming? Should I be the one ganking? Is this even the right lane for me? Isn't there some better way to control the camera?

Point being, for those of you just getting in and feeling overwhelmed: try to get used to the feeling and enjoy what you can. From what I understand, it's possible to actually win at some point

Just played my first game, randomed into Doom Bringer (or something). Now to learn how to play.

Did you do well? What was the reaction of your teammates? Did you tell'em that you're playing dota for the first time? If yes, what did they answer you? Were you called a noob? Did they asked you to uninistall Dota and to never play it again? Met your first Russian?

What is the action that mouse 3 does? I want to change that action to mouse 4, but I don't see an option for it.

Apparently the only 2 people on my team who talked were new too, though one of them played a lot of the original. They pretty much just ignored me after I said I was new, until I stole one of their items. Generally pretty cordial. We won the game, but I didn't do much.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't see the option to change it in the menu.

I downloaded the Steam iOS app and saw that to use the app I needed to be in a beta. Few minutes later I see an email on my iPhone titled "Steam Beta Invite". I try the app again and it doesn't work. I open the email to see if I had to authorize something then realize the beta invite was for DOTA2. :-D

Or raged at and called horrible names by people you will see post on NeoGAF!

Welcome to the current state of dota 2, where mouse1/mouse2/mouse3/ctrl/alt are not bound to anything, yet still perform an action. There is absolutely nothing that can be done about this currently from the user side.

Clinkz doesn't appear to have a voice for me. My friend doesn't hear it either.

I'm playing practice w him atm, and he's definitely voiced.

Me too, and I've tried again 3 times and he is not.

The Bungie Pentathlon is tomorrow, can't wait to watch their Dota 2 finals with Tobi commentating. Anyone else hyped?

Rooting for Luke Smith's team entirely out of bias, having played a few IHs and MM games with those folks. Land some shackles, Shed! I berieve in you!

Can someone explain what the "+" numbers mean in the stats of each hero?

They are how much you have added to that stat, be it via items, spellls, buffs, or whatever. For instance, with Invoker, if you have 3 Quas orbs, that's +1 for each to Strength. If you have 3 Quas orbs and an Iron Branch, then that's +4 for strength, +1 for agility, and +1 for intelligence.
