[Anime] Your "Controversial" Opinions

Not open for further replies.
Are we talking purely technical quality, japanese or english anime recordings, and any particular examples that bother you?

I'm not necessarily agreeing or disagreeing, I just want a bit more elaboration.

I'm mostly talking about the flow of conversations, mannerism and gestures. Most seem pretty "stiff" to me. Which hurts it in my opinion, however, I'm not discrediting the voice actors themselves though. There are quite a few I like a lot, like Gintoki from Gintama.

Thinking about it, it is probably the animation during them, what bothers me.

Controversial only in this thread but I love One Piece and it's pretty much the only anime I like. That being said, the animation quality has gone down significantly since Enies Lobby.

On the English side it's almost always recorded with the actors separately in different booths at different times. This makes the flow of conversation, and chemistry a bit difficult to achieve.

Japanese voice acting in certain shows is Disney tier in my opinion.

Ryusei Nakao, Masako Nozawa
Norio Wakamoto
Daisuke Gouri

Just to name a few.

Definitely sounds more natural than most English voice acting.

Well, I'm glad that my opinion of Gintama being the best thing coming out of Japan right now isn't all that controversial. Tip of the hat to you, comrades.

What a fucking ridiculous statement. Typical one piece fan sigh.

Your post summarizing the pretentiousness of Bleach and to a lesser extent Naruto doesn't help your case though.

You're quick to put Ichigo's "feelings" and "development" on a pedestal but dismiss every single Nakama Luffy has ever made (crewmember or not). I'm not saying Oda does it that much better but claiming that anything in Bleach or Naruto has depth over One Piece is straight up delusional.

(Re)read the backstories on the crewmembers, Laboon, the part where Usopp left the Strawhats, Luffy's time with Ace and Sabo etc. then we can talk.

Edit: oh yeah, Bleach background art is the laziest shit I've ever seen. Anybody arguing in favour of Bleach in this regard is an absolute troll.

Gundam Wing is the best Gundam. Because it's pardoy of itself. It's backwards philosophy and angst of all the Gundam series can only be truly told using angsty teenage gundam pilots.

G-Gundam is hilarious for many reasons as well.

But it's been ages since I've seen the earlier Gundam's, but that's how I feel about it.

This is mostly why I think Japanese dubs are better than American ones. Japanese ones feel like an old radio drama - which is confirmed by the fact that they still release radio drama CDs for all these properties.

Uh...Sasuke is still an enjoyable character. That's about as controversial as I can get.

I also believe that DBZ is barely watchable, but I'm not sure how controversial that would be on these parts.

I did once think that Naruto and Bleach were better and more interesting than One Piece, but that was thanks to 4Kids. I finally sat down and watch all of One Piece last summer and saw just how horribly wrong I was.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is the worst anime I've ever seen. I mean, there's probably some worse shit out there that I've just never watched, but I've never had such an unpleasant viewing experience.

Samurai Champloo is far better than Cowboy Bebop.

Martian Successor Nadesico was the best mecha anime from the 90s, bar none.

I think Hunter x Hunter is a better manga than Yu Yu Hakusho, but the Yu Yu Hakusho anime is definitely superior to Hunter x Hunter.

Wolf's Rain is godawful.

Stand Alone Complex is just boring. Like, IGPX levels of boring. It's not even that I hate the series, it just puts me to sleep.

Trigun isn't bad, but it's nothing special. It's reputation has more to do with the time it came over to the US than anything regarding the show itself. It's vastly overrated.

Diebuster is a pile of crap
Innocence is just as good as the first GITS or better
The Sky Crawlers was alright. Boring at times, but watchable and occasionally beautiful.
Giant Robo is overrated. Great style, but often bad pacing
Summer Wars is a total mess
Gurren Lagann is fun, but increasingly grating and stupid as it goes on.
Wolf's Rain is horrible
Madoka is mostly awful
Evangelion actually is really good

I really shouldn't post in this thread. I hate almost everything AnimeGAF loves and love almost everything AnimeGAF hates. lol

I think I lost track of it at like chapter 120, lol. Whever the cube battle ended.

Damn, that's a lot of stuff to cover. I'll stick to the main points;

- After Kogarasumaru defeats Behemoth in the cube battle, Simca (on Sora's orders) merges Genesis (the team that she, Spitfire, Nue, Yoshitsune and secretly Sora are part of) with Ikki's team. This is done to keep tabs on a band of rookies full of potential (that could become dangerous in the long run) and to locate the missing Wind Regalia.

- Ikki is challenged to jump the Devil's 33 by Yoshitsune during his school's field trip to Osaka in order to prove his worth as the new "leader" of Genesis. After failing multiple times and injuring his leg, Ikki completes the stunt and beats Sora's old record at the same time.

- Ikki sent to a hospital where Sora trains him to become the new Wind King. In reality he's using Ikki to design and test a new and improved Wind Regalia that he can then use for his own means. Kururu (the world's most talented tuner) is also introduced here.

- Meanwhile, Kogarasumaru (with Kazu at the helm) is being attacked by Sleeping Forest, who are trying to thwart Sora's scheme but are being portrayed as the enemy at this point in the story. Spitfire decides to make Kazu the new Flame King after seeing his talent.

- Ikki is discharged from the hospital. As a member of Sleeping Forest, Ringo has to fight him. Ikki is all but defeated until Kururu comes to the rescue with the new Wind Regalia, resulting in a draw. Feeling guilty for his actions, Ikki decides leaves the sisters' home.

- Sora feels threatened by the skill Ikki displayed with the new Bagram and decides to hasten his plans by stealing the incomplete Regalia. Ikki is taken to the Trophaeum Tower (the huge elevator shaft that doubles as a geothermal power plant) and meets Kilik.

- Sora reveals his true plans and kills Spitfire, who gives the Flame Regalia to Kazu before dying. Sora and his brother Nike are taken to a US aircraft carrier and prepare for their offensive against Kilik in the Gram Scale Tournament. If you're wondering why the military would get involved in this, recall that Air Trecks are powered by a revolutionary motor technology that was developed as part of a secret Japanese research project. The parts used in your average AT are very basic, but the tech itself has much more potential applications, including weapons, powered exoskeletons and more. By allying itself with Sora, the US military would gain access to the Sky Regalia, controlling all of the AT-derived tech in the world.

- Kogarasumaru battle the Old Sleeping Forest (Sora's old team) in a VR simulation. It's the only way for the team to compete in the GST as their ranking is too low otherwise (Koga split from Genesis after Sora's betrayal). They win and are introduced to US President-Elect Omaha (yes, he's a caricature of Obama) who explains the reason behind military interest in AT. He accidentally switches bodies with Emily as everyone is pulled out of the simulation.

- Genesis attacks Osaka to retrieve the Rumble Regalia. Yoshitsune is killed but Benkei is able to escape and give the regalia to Kogarasumaru. Kururu designs a new regalia for Ikki that combines the Wind and Rumble principles, dubbed the Storm Regalia.

- The Flame Regalia is stolen and Kazu becomes depressed. Ikki knocks him out of it after a fight that results in a tie.

- The GST begins. Kogarasumaru defeats Electric Circus and are about to fight their next opponent when we learn that Genesis is holding Rika hostage on the aircraft carrier. Kogarasumaru beats Sleipnir and heads to the aircraft carrier to rescue Rika.

- A bunch of fights ensue. Ikki beats Nue. Buccha beats Orca. Akito/Agito/Lind beat Arthur and Shalott with Kaito's help, and Onigiri beats Robo-Nike but gets stomped when the real one arrives. Kazu and Aeon team up against Nike and with Aeon dying in the process. Kazu defeats Nike with the full power of the Flame Regalia.

- All the members of Genesis on the aircraft carrier are defeated but the mission is a failure because Rika gets brainwashed. However, this allows Ikki to collect a bunch of regalia cores to power up the Storm Regalia.

- Rika is escorted back to the Trophaeum Tower by Dr. Minami and teams up with Sora to fight Kilik and the new Sleeping Forest.

- Sora tricks Kilik into using the incomplete Sky Regalia against him and uses the diversion to get his hands on the briefcase at the bottom of the shaft, giving him control of the complete Sky Regalia. He uses his new powers to kill Kilik.

- The Sky Regalia activates the true purpose of the Trophaeum Tower, which is a space elevator (or tower) rising 35 km high above the surface. It was built underground and designed to be elevated with the energy collected by the geothermal power plant over decades. This was actually foreshadowed in Chapter 149.

- Ringo and Ikki storm the tower with their new Regalia and fight their way up to Sora and Rika who are at the top. While this is happening, we are treated to an exaggerated virtual simulation of what would happen if Ikki, whose Storm Regalia combines 7 powerful Regalia Cores into one and Sora, whose Wind Regalia integrates all of the other Regalia (he gained control of almost everything that is AT-related with the Sky Regalia, remember?) were to clash at their full power.

- They decide to have a 2v2 race to the bottom of the tower with Ikki and Sora being restricted from using their Regalia's power (because of the destruction that would ensue).

There's also a few points that don't fit in the summary but are nonetheless an important part of the storyline;

Gravity Children/Brain Chargers: One of the goals of AT technology was for people to achieve something close to flight. However, it was soon discovered that your average person lacked the skills to use Air Trek to its full potential, which led to the creation of Gravity Children. The project consisted of genetically altering human embryos in order to induce desirable traits such as improved spatial awareness, strength and sense of balance. These children were then forced to ride AT from birth. Sora, Kilik and Spitfire among others were part of the original 28 Gravity Children. Note that everyone but Kilik were to be disposed of as failures if it wasn't for the latter's intervention.

Brain Chargers, as their name implies, are regular humans that have gained the necessary skills to ride AT through brainwashing.

Dr. Minami: One of the brains behind AT technology and the GC/BC projects.

Sora, his apparent motives and the 99%: At first, this may seem like Oh Great is pulling another Omaha by ham-fisting Occupy Wall Street into the manga but that's not really the case.

During the Gravity Children project, the researchers were planning to dispose of every child (the 99%) except Kilik, who was exceptionally talented (the 1%). Sora would grow to hate the concept of a select few people being naturally gifted or wealthy compared to the the masses.

In his OWS-inspired speech, he is referring to the majority of the world's human population as the "99%". In other words, he is planning to use the power of the Sky Regalia to rule over the planet and solve all of its problems through AT technology's energy conservation/efficiency and by providing technological needs in people's everyday lives, thus making everyone "fly".

Is that enough or are you confused by what's happening in the current battle as well?

Damn, that's a lot of stuff to cover. I'll stick to the main points;

Oh jeez, sorry to make you right all that out (unless you pasted it from somewhere).

But yeah, it's a lot clearer now. Half the time, I have no clue what the villain's motivations are and I've always been super confused about the Gravity Children, but this helps. Thanks a lot.

This is mostly why I think Japanese dubs are better than American ones. Japanese ones feel like an old radio drama - which is confirmed by the fact that they still release radio drama CDs for all these properties.

On the positive side for English dubs is that you'll rarely, if ever see them fall suspect to stunt casting d-list celebrities who have absolutely no experience.

A few that nobody seems to agree with me on:

- The best Gundam series is MS 08th Team, and Gundam is always better when it leans in the realistic mecha direction and not the super robot direction
- Evangelion is actually great, and nearly all the hate it gets is pure popularity/oversaturation backlash
- Macross Plus is Best Macross, and the English dub (featuring Bryan Cranston as Isamu Dyson) is better than the Japanese version
- The best ensemble comedy anime of all time is Urusei Yatsura and if you disagree you're wrong
- Makoto Shinkai's stuff (Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, 5 Centimeters Per Second) is conceptually brilliant and technically impressive, but none of his stories ever quite live up to their potential

Ponyo: Tina Fey, Liam Neeson, Matt Damon, and Cate Blanchett.
Oh, and Howl's Moving Castle had Christian Bale.

I really shouldn't post in this thread. I hate almost everything AnimeGAF loves and love almost everything AnimeGAF hates. lol

Basically this. If AnimeGAF likes it, chances are I find it boring. If AG hates it, chances are I find it enjoyable. Though there are some exceptions in both directions, I generally just like watching anime as a means of entertainment. Most of the "slice of life" anime (only really liked Genshiken), shows pushing some form of social commentary, shows trying to be (or even succeeding in being) more intelligent than the viewers, and shows that revolve around animals just aren't very enjoyable for me to watch most of the time.

That said, I'm not the biggest fan of the moe and harem revolution either. I really don't have much of an issue with these kinds of shows other than them being far too numerous and repetitive. I'm ok with these types of shows lacking in the plot department as long as the individual episodes can stand on their own and be enjoyable (which in this case, usually requires it to be a comedy or an action show with really good fight sequences). Also, the male leads in these kind of shows tend to be annoyingly dense (the harems were the male lead is an unashamed pervert tend to be a lot better).

Lastly, One Piece is the best anime/manga going right now (though the current arc is a little meh).

This, basically. There are exceptions. I kinda enjoyed Penguindrum, even though the ending was shit and I think the show tried way too hard, but it had some strong characters and good comedy. But at the end of the day, I watch shit to be entertained and to feel good. A lot of the "good" animes are an exercise in masochism. All that deep, philosophical, metaphorical and most of all depressing bullshit can fuck right off. That shit usually isn't even all that intelligent. If I want to feel bad, I watch the news or a political debate.

Code Geass season 1 is one of the greatest anime season of all time I called recall ever been so endlessly entertain over such a short period of time by an anime.

Hellsing Ultimate > Every other vampire related anything.

This is all pretty agreeable stuff, except for the bit about Macross Plus dub.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is horribly bland and tries really badly to be a liveaction show in every way it can. It's a horribly neutered vision of the GITS universe. Oshii's interpretation of GITS takes huge steaming shits on SAC.

You're one of the few people I've ever heard state such a thing. SAC is the perfect balance between GitS and GitS: Innocence.

I think that Monster is one of the worst shows ever in terms of pacing. I've tried to watch the show at least three times, get to around episode ten, and completely zone out. Glacially paced and boring. That's the only semi-controversial statement I can think of. I know that Monster has a lot of fans.

This is all pretty agreeable stuff, except for the bit about Macross Plus dub.

Haha, the Macross Plus dub is probably the one thing on that list I get the least disagreement on. It's one of the best ever done.

I guess that's one more for the list: As I've gotten older, I've begun to care less and less about the dub vs. sub nonsense and find most dubs perfectly listenable these days. Hetalia's dub in particular is pretty damn good.

No probs man. I actually have a bunch of explanations on the series scattered across multiple forums and just pasted them here along with pieces of the wiki :P

It can definitely be difficult to follow if you're just skimming through the chapters.

Air Gear isn't difficult to follow. It just got insanely stupid at a certain point.

^^^
That one.

I admire your passion but man I just can't formulate a different opinion. And Air Gear was pretty decent up to that point. :(

---

I don't have many controversial opinions on most anime/manga... My only controversial opinion is that most of the popular shounen are terrible. The only exception is the SS arc from Bleach which had rare moments. But other then that, take OP, HxH, Bleach, uh... Fairy Tale...all that shit, put it in a fire, and burn it. Series were entertaining the same time I enjoyed DBZ...when I was 12. All discussions on those series read like they are coming from a bunch of kids trying not to get caught in homeroom.

See, now I'm not even making friends of the enemies of shounen piece exhibit A by bashing exhibit B. I'm pissing off everyone. Go read Blood Lad and watch Gintama.

I also read/watch a lot of shitty media. But I don't deny that they are shitty. Currently watching Zero F and reading RtV as quick examples.
