Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter project by Double Fine [ended, $3.3 Million funded]

Yeah, fifteen bucks for a full adventure game made by some of the best talents in the industry and a professionally produced monthly documentary series to go with it. Just giving it away.

Not to mention the project being bigger and better as the amount of money increases. Not only that but you get to play the beta, comment on and improve via exclusive forum about everything happening in the game while it's being made. Just giving it away indeed.

From a Psychonauts Q&A I did with Schafer back in 2005 and more evidence on how awesome he is:

Most of the projects you’ve worked on have been “one-off” games without any sequels. Would you want Psychonauts to turn into a franchise? Are derivative sequels bad for the industry?
Kind of a leading question don’t you think? Are derivative sequels bad for the industry? I’m not sure, I mean is toxic candy bad for kids? Is carcinogenic pollution bad for the environment? (And strangely, the answer to all those questions is still, “Depends how much money it makes.”)

So far $1 million in seed money? It's like this game's making money even before it has been made.

The question is no longer if this will reach $1 million--it's now how many millions it will go.
This is too cool.

Imagine, he spends the rest of money making Psychonauts 2 and provides it for free for anyone who paid $15 and over...

*DREAMS*

yeah, no, that'd be really seriously wrong and would piss off all the people that donated FOR this.

but Psychonauts 2 is looking prettly likely now anyways, so i wouldn't sweat it. don't steal this money for Psychonauts 2. Notch is on it, and i'd bet, a second kickstarter if that isn't enough.

This is amazing. I really hope I can donate to the cause before it ends(money is bit tight right now). If not, I'll definitely pick it up when it comes out on Steam. This seems like a really brilliant way to raise funds for a game.

If Chris Avellone is going to do a kickstart for another game in the Planescape universe I am going to donate my house ffs!

Put in $30. I don't play many adventure games but interested in getting into them and watching the documentary. Hope the development goes well.

wow!
Just got in and checked the total for the first time since it was at $400,000.
This isn't just about a DF adventure game, it seems to be a message from gamers to the industry in general - this could be the start of a new way of doing things and a new freedom for game devs.
To be honest I'm less interested in the final product than the opportunity to support a team with their hearts in the right place and an opportunity to cut out the middle-men. It really feels like a chance to be a part of something that will shake things up for the better. I'm a hippie at heart and this feels like the beginning of better days for the industry with less publisher power.
Fantastic stuff.

Tim Schafer and Double Fine deserve every penny.
Had the chance to meet Tim at PAX last year and he is just as funny in person. My girlfriend who idolizes him asked him to sign her 3DS to which he replied "You know I didn't make this right?". After he signed it and we walked away, we looked at the 3DS and found that he signed it "I made this - Tim Schafer".

Man is a god damn legend.

Feel the same way man. We're making history here. Gamers around the world coming together for the love of making good old-fashioned games instead of shareholder determined machine-made sequels.

Might as well post it here too: on twitter Chris Avellone expressed interest in kickstarting an old school RPG.
This is becoming huge, I can feel it. (or at least it's just what I'm hoping.)

WHAT.

That is almost better than my suggestion that Sakaguchi needs to do one for his FF1-5 era games.

I knew when Wario64 posted this, it would be a big deal.

Put 15 down for this. It is what I would have more than willingly paid day 1 on Steam.

I've wanted developers to do this for years now. It was about time someone big enough finally tried it. Now if only Gabe Newell would jump aboard this kind of idea too, instead of just theorizing it.

Didn't Gabe want it to work more like a investor relationship, rather then a Kicstarter relationship? Making the paperwork much more complex, and probably not something that will happen soon.

Yeah, wasn't Gabe talking about something like that back in 2006 or so?

This is so cool! Can't wait to see what type of game those brilliant Double Fine crazies make! This just jumped past Phoenix Wright 5 as my most anticipated upcoming adventure game :)

Im not even much of a point and click guy but I'm really rooting for this because if nothing else I want this to send a message to the industry that we demand more diversity and creativity and not everything should be dudebro mature and shooters.

So what types of things are necessary for more of this type of funding to become used? Would developers need to more aggressively "pitch" game ideas to folks. Big names like Tim obviously have the fanbase, but what about smaller, up-and-coming developers with great ideas that could really use a solid budget?

I don't know if that works as much, at least not at such an early stage for a project. I actually kicked in on this, even though I'm not the biggest adventure game fan because I like the project, Tim, Double Fine and I'm rather interested in the video series. I'm pretty darn sure that I at least would not chip in for even a game that interested me if I was not really sure about the track record of the studio producing it. Sounds bad to say this, but I wouldn't fund an indie with a good idea unless they already had a really good demo that I was interested in for instance.

How long before they'll hit the $1,000,000 mark? Two hours? Three? This will be a profitable project, no doubt about it.

Just look round the kickstarter games section, plenty of small games you'll never hear about (or are less likely to) get funded through it quite well.
If you don't have name recognition and a pedigree like Tim and Co, show off assets and such for the game.
