Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter project by Double Fine [ended, $3.3 Million funded]

HD and you can download it.

Sounds not worth an extra $15 to me.
"HD download of the documentary series with extras, Digital game soundtrack, and all previous reward tiers."

That's written to say more than HD and OST. It implies you're getting more of the documentary.

Now that they've increased their budget so much I'm sure they'll be able to upgrade this from a point and click adventure. Phew!

They want to make a point and click. They set out to make an Adventure Game. The genre was never reliant on the amount of money they had.

Most of the "prizes" aren't worth it tbh, what's worth it is the quality of the game that the extra money funds.

Yup! This is different than paying $10-$20 more for a bullshit 'Collector's Edition'. Those games are already almost complete by the time the bonuses are announced. With this, we're actively deciding what the budget of the game (and accompanying documentary) will be!

I'm honestly on the fence about using my unemployment money to up my funding to $30, but I just don't see an HD download as a good enough justification. Unless they purposefully make the picture crap on SD like Hulu Not Plus does.

Why on earth do they only accept credit cards. No one in Germany has a credit card! So i cant fund it.

The fuck? I have 3 of them. You get them for free these days from most banks. How can you live without one?

Shit son

And yeah I live in Germany too.

3million calling it now. I'm telling you like 30-40% of the funds from these things come in the last couple of days where people go into last miniute panic mode.

And the total could technically be more, as any donation of $10,000 looks like they are going to go directly to DF and not through Kickstarter.

Jesus the goal was 400,000, they already have nearly a million and they have 33 more donation days. This is just astounding really.

Shows what the fans can do when they appreciate what a developer has to offer. I hope more respected institutions who are trying to get something published but can't go to the fans for help. There's a few candidates I can think of, and Doublefine surely can be at the top. I abhor their Kinect garbage and Brutal Legend was an ambitious wreck, but Costume Quest was quaint enough of a distraction for the price and Stacked was genuinely fun. They have novel ideas, and I always feel they're on the brink of the next great thing. So here's hoping this new one is a great title.

Can't wait for Psychonauts 2 as well if the Notch thing goes through, since that was a spirited game which landed most of its goals. I liked the Meat Circus too, even. Fantastic news today

So are they really extras when you're providing the extra funding for them to walk around with a camera, film, and edit the footage into the documentary? Can I just pay for the game without helping pay this cameraman's salary?

I'm also willing to open up the steamapps folder myself, copy the .mp3's, and organize them on my external myself.

As a fan, I am very happy to help out with this process by doing these tasks on my own time. Now let me pay for just the game and not these extra funds added on to justify the kickstarter.

Or maybe Double Fine could be honest and say that "Hey, we want to make a documentary and organize our .mp3's for a soundtrack that we will sell on Steam. Kickstart it for us :)"

That'd be great.

You can't use Amazon Payments? Maybe they don't have that in Germany, but basically you can check out though Amazon, so if you're able to buy things from Amazon, you should be able to contribute to the Kickstarter (but maybe that doesn't work in Germany?)

Amir0x, you liked the Meat Circus but can't find any joy in Happy Action Theater?! How :(

I actually really want to try the updated Psychonauts for Steam, just to see if they really did "fix" the Meat Circus. I really need to play it again regardless, especially seeing as I originally played the kinda janky PS2 version.

I contributed my 30 - it would be great if alternative funding schemes like this take off.

I don't really think it would be. I'd hate to have sites like 4chan reddit or even GAF as my major backer, it could seriously blow up over the smallest thing.

well, a typical game costs between 20/60 bucks, so the 15$ is already a steal. Add to that an HD docu series, with OST + beta access and forum access to communicate with the team. Then suddenly that stuff you get for 30 buck has increased in value.

Have to check the German Amazon payments never used it.

€: Nope dosnt work.

$3.75 out of your $15 is going to the documentary. $7.50 if you spend $30. They're clear and upfront about that. If that's not clear enough for you, you should probably not back the project.

Amir0x, you liked the Meat Circus but can't find any joy in Happy Action Theater?! How :(

Happy Action Theater is another in a long line of Kinect lag mini-game compilation tripe, shallow blips of abominable gameplay; cut little segments from fuller games that people might actually want to play if fleshed out. A fine tradition of dumbing down gameplay for toddlers and ADHD-addled gamers. It doesn't surprise me people like this garbage, since I unfortunately live in a world where people legitimately rate the Wii Sports abomination as something higher rated than murder and child abuse. But garbage it remains, as do 99.999% of all mini-game compilations.

Meat Theater is simply a harder version of the gameplay Psychonauts had already established up until that point, and just far less playtested so some people found it troublesome. I'm actually good at games so it wasn't hard for me and I like a challenge, even though it clearly could have used some polish.

Pfft. Shame on anyone thinking about rewards as the primary justification. Knowing that my money is going directly towards making the game as awesome as possible is more than enough.

If Tim can recapture the grim fandango magic in a modern, purely point and click form I will gladly empty my wallet for him whenever he wants. <3

also, jesus christ 943k this is amazing

I wish this could be the future of gaming. While it obviously wouldn't work for everything, man... just think about the possibilities. No focus testing, no profitability meetings, no long list of publisher to turn down or demand changes to the game. Developer wants to make a game, fans want the game, they come together to make it happen.

I wish I knew more about game budgets, and how realistic this could be for projects I actually care about.

I'm pretty sure that they have amazon in germany and this guy is just weird.

You will be able to buy the game for whatever price they launch it for once it's released on Steam. It's already gone well past the goal for funding, so it will be made. If you don't want to fund the project, then just wait for the release.

And what exactly are they being dishonest about? Did you read the press release or watch the accompanying video? They are pretty clear about how they plan to spend the money.

Sadly, that's almost the entire reason why most people donate to Desert Bus anymore. It's no longer about The Children, it's about how much money Matt Wiggins can waste going to see Twilight for 24 hours.

Realistically, a 3 million dollar budget for an adventure game is quite nice indeed I have to imagine. The average AAA budget these days is, what, $20,000,000 or $30,000,000? And the average A rated game budget has to be $10,000,000, since that was the budget for the average AAA game last gen no?

Do you think that kickstarter contributors have that much control over the course of the project? I mean, say 4chan was the major contributor to a kickstarter campaign. What do you think could come of that?

As I see it, the degree of input in exchange for contribution is entirely up to the developers here. It's a goodwill gesture more than anything. I'm chipping in some money, they have committed to making a game and will deliver that to me when the project is done. It's not like I'm a stockholder interested in maximizing profitability and it's not like people can just pull support or give an ultimatum, is it?

Well, I'd never actually buy DFHAT, or use it more than once even, but it's justified its existence to me by having people muck around with it in an amusing fashion on the internet, ha. Seriously though, it's not even a game. It's just a thing you can mess around with, which I feel they're pretty much up-front about. With that being that and the Sesame Street game being aimed at like 3 year olds, well, it's hard to feel anything but indifferent towards Double Fine's Kinect stuff, as someone who is outside of the area of interest they've created for those products. They're pretty distanced from Microsoft's 'THE FUTURE OF GAMING IS HANDS FREE' shite, so I'm fine with it all.

And Meat Circus basically forgot what the game's big weakness was- remotely challenging platforming. You're right, it seemed like it'd barely been playtested at all. It was hard because the game's controls weren't quite good enough to suit something like that. I beat it, sure, but it wasn't fun, it was frustrating.

This doesn't mean I'd prefer to have pick up Raz with my hands via Kinect and plonk him down next to a 'YOU WON DA GAME' sign, just in case you think I'm leaning that way. :P
