Yeah, and the negatives listed don't scream killer app for the money. If you "love" Wipeout, you'll probably like it good enough. If you just "like" Wipeout, it's not a must buy. If you are new to the series, there isn't a lot in the reviews that scream buy me.

It doesn't mean either game is bad. I myself am still interested in them but they are no longer "must buy" games.

Also, i've been using IGN for close to 16 years now and I have always found their grades to be way more lenient than some of the other review sites (Gametrailers and Gamespot for example) so I don't get why some of you are calling me crazy.

We think you're crazy because you suggest that 7 - 8.5 is doom and gloom for the Vita. That seems a little over the edge.

Otherwise, I'm sure you're a swell guy.
 
A 7 isn't a bad score at all. But if the consensus appears to be that a game falls in the 7-8 range, my own personal buying strategy is to avoid it until it goes on sale. There's just far too many highly rated games for me to spend my money on first. My money is almost as important to me as my time. And let's be honest, games go on sale incredibly fast now.

Thankfully game reviews are not all on a 1-5 scale, and they are not all like your workplace. I've also worked in customer service - anything less than a 5 is considered "bad".

Luckily, product reviews have many more nuances than a black and white "it was positive or it was negative" consumer survey.
 
Question, is there a "play log" app or something like that, like the 3DS has? I'd love to be able to track how long I play each game, at the system level.

1) If you've got the money to only get the "cream of the crop," then fine. That still doesn't make "things worse for Sony's Vita." That's a YOU problem.
 
Can anyone confirm if Patapon 3 works for Vita, that will pretty much confirm me buying one. Or does Metal Gear Peace Walker have 2 stick support.
 
Since when has 7 not been a good score?

By definition on a 10 point scale it is two points better than average and 3 points less than perfect.

To suggest 7 isn't a good score is utterly stupid, objectively speaking.

I couldnt care less about the scores, but most every review says the load times in Wipeout suck and that there's framerate issues. Sorry, Sony, not buying it. I have a perfectly good PSP version I can still play and an amazing PS3 version. If you're going to make console-esque games for the Vita, you damn well better make them good.

Yeah, we tried Reality Fighters too. It's creepy and doesn't control well. Didn't like it. Should have revamped the art direction to more stylized/cartoony characters, and focus (all their attention) on the gameplay.

I am disappointed they didn't at least try to make the EyeToy "Tank demo" into a Vita game/demo though.
 
fully paid off my wifi preorder. I think I'll get a 32gb card and try to go all digital for the entirety of the vita's lifetime.

But there's a patch that will fix everything!!

I agree and it's why I cancelled my Wipeout pre-order.

After playing it this weekend I'm still going to give it a shot. Looks beautiful on that screen. But yeah, the last time I heard that patch to fix load times nonsense was for ModNation on PS3. That didn't work out too well.

I just can't resist Wipeout.
 
I have a question. Does metacritic weight certain reviews more so then others? The reason I ask is hot shots has 4 critics reviews. Two 90s and two 70s so my assumption is that it's metacritic score should be 80 but it's actually 76. Why?

I'm the same with Lumines. You could tell me that every other round it shits in your mouth, and I'd still make an excuse to buy it. We all have our weaknesses.

I'm puzzled about Wipeout. Played the demo and the framedrops were obvious, but people who own the game say it's a rocksolid 30 fps. The loading times are patched btw so that shouldn't be a problem. For me the real gamebreaker is the framerate.

I can live with 30 fps ( Dirt, Split Second and Blur to name a few also got 30 fps ) but then again, it would be nice when it's a locked 30 fps.
 
Normally I don't get too worked up over reviews, but the reviews for the Vita games aren't well conceived reviews.

First we have nearly every reviewer comparing the Vita version of the games to the console counterpart and if it fails to match the console even in the graphics department it is docked a grade.

Then we have the docking of points for touch controls, which if mandatory and tedious is warranted, but docking points for optional touch controls is ridiculous. I have read some reviews where in the summary optional touch controls are listed as a negative compared to the console version....then don't use them.

Why aren't these games being judged on their own merit or to other handheld games? How does Uncharted GA look compared to Resident Evil Revelations or to any handheld game for that matter? I just don't get the comparison to home console games. If it is a shared IP some comparison to how the game is played or the story is told is warranted but to compare graphics and sound is ludicrous. There is no way a Vita game or 3DS game will ever out perform a console in those departments. Are we constantly going to go through this with every shared IP? If so get used to 8's and lots of them.

It does work the same way, at least expectation wise. A 7 represents a flawed game, where those flaws were strong enough to give it a very average review score. You can argue all you want about how 7 means "good".. but history tells us that 7 means "average".

One can overlook those flaws and enjoy it, and there's no guarantee that a 10 means perfection to me. Yet, as a tool, the system works as part of the buying decisions we all make.

Those review scores overall can not be what Sony wanted for launch. Also, to think they won't have impact on overall sales is naive.

Take Uncharted, which despite all the love and hype hasn't sold nearly as well as one might think for such a high profile title.. to only have a 78 Meta has to be a giant disappoint for Sony.

you're absolutely missing out if you're a wipeout fan. i haven't experienced any issues with framerate at all. it plays great. the loading times are long but they don't make the game any less awesome.

WipEout isn't even a weakness for me most of the time... I just really want something to play with my Vita. :)

The PSP had to deal with this during its entire lifespan. I don't think the Vita will be treated any differently, unfortunately.

Yep, for Wipeout to work for me it has to be stable. Really really stable. Otherwise what's the point.

Fortunately I have at least 3 great PSP games that I put off playing until now that I'll be playing on the Vita while I wait for price drops or other games to come out (Mortal Kombat, MLB). Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Vice City, and hopefully Chinatown Wars.

A lot of outlets seem to feel that they almost have to review the portable version of a game under its console counterpart. Unfortunately for the Vita, it's going to find itself compared to consoles a lot more than the 3DS because it's running on powerful hardware. 3DS doesn't have this problem as much but it can happen with big franchises that go portable.
