Call of Duty Vita confirmed for Fall release.

Even if Call of Duty isn't THE system seller it'll likely add value to the system and make people more inclined to get it, at least if it's the same as console versions (roughly). The games easily sells 10+million, you could probably get at least a million or two on Vita when it's established, and it'll be the kind of thing that could help push people over the edge (I want to get this game, this game... and hey, it's got Call of Duty too!)

Fair enough, but my point is that the CoD fanbase is so large that even if only a small portion of people felt it necessary to buy a Vita for a handheld installment, the sales would still be substantial. It's common knowledge by now - the franchise is colossal. So colossal that it would bolster Vita sales considerably, in my opinion.

Okay... I get where you are coming from. I guess we will find out.

The average person that plays Call of Duty is not going to shell out $249 + $49.99 (there's no way CoD is going to be cheaper than that on Vita) for a Call of Duty experience when they can just buy the game for $10 more and play it on a console with friends who already own that console.

Basically, buy new version of the game for $59 or buy a new platform for $249.99 + memory storage + $49.99 game + find more people to play online with or convince friends to buy the Vita.

Most people are going to opt out to just buy the new version of the game on the platform they already own.
If CoD is the only game they are interested in for Vita, then sure. But keep in mind that a lot of people buy a Vita (or whatever system for that matter) for more than one reason. Personally i would buy a Vita regardless if it got a CoD game or not and i'm a fairly big CoD fan.

But how much CoD will sell on Vita is so far just a wild guess. It can go both ways.

wait - how is the Wii-U version going to be pissing in -anyones- cornflakes?! if there's a strong "no one will buy a PSV for COD" then who the hell is going to switch over from X360/PS3 to Wii-U for COD?

The Wii-u version will have the selling point of "da bestest grafficks" at least

Because it's a next gen "console" which people will be buying for those supposedly next gen games not entirely for CoD. The people saying CoD will save the Vita make it sound like tons of people will buy a vita just to play that portable version of CoD.

Nobody but that wasn't what I was suggesting.

I was suggesting that online play is the draw of CoD, and given synchronous online play demands high quality connections most Vita gamers would be playing CoD in their homes anyway. Lots of people will end up choosing the console versions on that principle alone and those that really want to play it in handheld form and have a Wii-U will likely be able to do so with their console SKU.

Nearly every other version could be eating the Vita version's lunch... Or as I put it: end up pissing in the cornflakes

Why would you have to pass on the console versions to get Vita? The major pull for Vita is playing on PS3 then continuing on Vita. Vita is not meant to replace PS3 or 360. It's meant to enhance them by allowing you to play the same games on a handheld.

Just over 10m MW3 sold for PS3. How many of those do you think are seriously likely to double dip on the game and buy a new console to play it away from their TV?

No, it won't. If those people cared about the graphics, they'd have been playing them on PC where it's significantly better than the WiiU could ever muster. They care about the online infrastructure which contains their friends I imagine. Which is why the WiiU, and PSV versions aren't particularly important.

Well with CoD superior graphics and gameplay seems to mean something. CoD games have had Wii version also. We know how those sold compared to HD consoles. Same scenario could happen with 3DS and Vita versions.

Then why doesn't the PC version sell best by miles?
Best online.
Best controls.
Best graphics.

Regardless, we're comparing different things. The Wii got modern CoDs late in its life, after the other two already had the userbase for them.

i'd be hype if you could play over 3g

Pretty sure you can't play anything over 3G.

cue debate about whether or not people will buy cod on a portable

they won't

You underestimate the CoD addiction among the general public. People will buy it if it isn't a cut back version and their console stats carry over to the Vita.

I am sure people can't wait to play cod on a 7" screen...

Yeah, because nobody wanted to play GTA on their PSP screen. Oh wait... they did.

I'm obviously referring to consoles (including handhelds) not PCs and while I'm not suggesting huge numbers will switch their COD playing to Wii-u I can just see vastly more doing so than to vita

Yeah, the PSP only sold seventy million units... bomba.

people always mention the psp's numbers in discussions such as this, but did that console (outside of its first two years, perhaps) ever hold any considerable mindshare amongst developers? how much money did psp games make for publishers?

I guess when you guys are saying "First Portable COD" you're referring to "First Portable Main-line series COD"?

Even though I've been down on COD, I won't deny that a legit portable COD game would be pretty rad.

How many do you think? 6? Maybe 10 people at max right? lol. I like how people are trying to turn this into a negative. Oh no one is going to buy it. Oh noes. Better run Sony.

I actually hope that the CoD Vita is a game of its own. It would be cool for cross play with PS3 though, but i kinda agree a bit about the double dipping stuff. I will still double dip personally however, but who knows what the general public will do.

Ever heard about piracy?
Online doesnt work with pirated version. Well, maybe hacked servers works, but then you're missing out on leveling up, prestiging etc.

I don't think this is the game that's going to make the Vita huge or anything, but continuing to get games announced for it is a good thing. I think even if it doesn't sell too many new Vitas, a large amount of the Vita userbase will likely buy the game since it'll likely be quite true to the real console game.

CoD Vita's main appeal is going to be playing a FPS on a handheld with capable graphics, dual analog sticks, and a range of other inputs. I'm sure they'll bundle it with the 3G model. Whether or not people BUY into that is another matter. No one here can say for sure if it will sell systems. But it does have it's selling point.

This game was announced at E3, though.
It's not a new announcement nor even all that interesting.
We got no details, and CoD will be on every system possible.

How is mindshare amongst developers a viable thing we can even gauge let alone use as any way to establish the popularity of a platform?

Some publishers made a lot of money on PSP, some didn't, but the system sold well. People talk about the PSP like it's the GameGear or something, it's not. That doesn't mean the PSV won't be of course...

Having a realistic viewpoint = turning it into a negative just for the sake of doing so and/or "hate"?

Ever heard about piracy?

Why is that a negative? People don't buy gaming Pc's for gaming as often as Consoles because it's perceived to be more expensive to get a decent gaming Pc (obviously it's not) that and various issues like tweaking graphical options sometimes to get desired results makes its public perception come off as less attractive. Plus comfy coach etc.

Good, now let's see some Vita specific features in the game. ;-)

Even better if it explores cross play, Near, and WiiU pad-like concepts.

Please no on-line play gimmicks like the launch games but real MP

Be sure to add PS3-Vita cross play

Personally I want the next Battefield on Vita

oh and the next Demon's Soul or Dark Soul :)

"mindshare amongst developers" is a laughable concept. Its either a platform and a project you can make money from, or its not an option.

Its that simple.

Would hspa+ be fast enough for online gaming. Or is it 4G or bust?

You will still be able to tether a phone's 3G connection so that your Vita sees it as a Wifi Connection... I do this presently for 3DS. Its okay for downloads, and I've even had a couple of okay games of Mario Kart...

the problem is - that latency is all over the place. Mobile phone masts perform load balancing so that all of their customers in a given area can have a quality signal, and often-times - a single mast can be servicing customers of two or three different companies. Your phone (or 3G vita) will switch its access from one mast to another as you move around or the phone finds stronger signals. As you can imagine this plays havoc with connection consistency -- and for your opponents... well, you are basically just fucking up their game by taking part.

3G will be great for some online games, but for games with twitch shooter reactions, where your latency counts, its going to cause displeasurable experiences for those using it and those who aren't...

I get HSDPA connections all the time, and it can be fast, but the consistency issues are still abounds. 4G and onwards will be where its at for truly mobile online gaming.

Personnaly, I don't see PS3/360 players massively buy the Vita version, especially without 3G. Of course, it's just my opinion, but when you play online, you have to be connected with wi-fi. So you have to be at home (where you already have a bigger screen, allowing you better view and better controls) or in a public place, where you can't play online like at home, I mean, communicate with teamates, or keep concentrated.
But of course, it's a Call of Duty game, it could sell easily 1M or 2M. But I don't see it like a console seller, or selling like the console versions.

I think it sell a million or two and not more. The Cod fan base won't move to the PSV. Like the GTA fan base diddling move to the PSP
