Tribes Ascend Beta Thread: Shazbot!

One thing I wanna see, better matchmaking. I am really certain that just about 95% of the games I play in end with 0 - 5 or 1 - 5 in capture the flag. It is extremely rare to get balanced teams when everyone picks on their own. It is just frustrating to play either with the team who just steamrolls the enemy, offering no real challenge or the ones who are loosing hard, making playing feeling like butting head with a brickwall.

Gotta say though I like the new patch, customization is what I wanted with the classes and not the locked down ones from before. Heh, when I wrote that in the chat while playing people would argue at me for being stubborn and "complaining at a F2P game". I wanna pay money for this, which I have, so some rights I should have to make comments.

Anyone having problems with the game CTD? I'm running Win7 x64. Google searching pulls up no immediate results.

I have those too. Quite often recently.

I'm having blast with Doombringer. It's so satisfying to clear a room with its primary gun. Also infiltrator has badass mines.

So I've finally been able to play the game for the first time after dropping the 30$ "pre-order" for it a couple months ago.

I haven't unlocked anything yet (I haven't even activated my 30-day booster) and I've been playing Juggernaut exclusively, mainly on defense (both as HoF and as generator defense, depending on the map and situation) with occasional generator killing runs and I've had tons of fun with it. The Mortar is really satisfying when you get a kill on an open field, maybe nailing someone behind a hill or just bombarding incoming attackers and blasting a wannabe flag carrier out of his route with the spinfusor is always a great feeling.

I don't want to touch my 6000 gold yet so I'll probably wait until I reach 14000 xp (I'm basically there already) and unlock the Doombringer because it looks like that is the Heavy class designed for the defense but I have to admit that at least the standard loadout doesn't appeal incredibly to me for now. I'll see, after all it doesn't take long at all to get up to that amount of xp.

I suck at the game but slowly getting better. It's hard to get used to it after years of COD and Battlefield.

Just played the game post patch. What have they done with Bella Omega flag area. Though I guess it makes sense since everyone just forcefield spammed the flag area to stop cappers pre patch.

Oh man, I had no idea they changed all of this in the recent patch. Gotta play Tribes again.

Gotta go fast

In the span of quite a few unlocks Doombringer went from being not that fun to pretty nice. Mines are awesome and cutting down on startup spin for the Chaingun is great. I spent some of my Gold to unlock the mines but it was worth it, I couldn't wait much longer.

Too bad the secondary weapon makes me cringe. Sure, I'll wait the 3 years necessary to lock to get the Homing Missle from Worms, just deadlier and slow. Not that I would want it to be much better, I suppose it would be too painful for anybody on the receiving end even if I've never been there (3 seconds of flight are a pipe dream for a Doombringer). Hopefully they'll add something completely different some day.
In the meantime I'm thinking of using Safety third as Primary Perk because hell yeah more Mines without needing to go back to restock to often. That or Looter for pretty much the same reason.

Played Boss last night in an official scrim. Despite some questionable ethics and moves on Boss' behalf, won it. Still undefeated in scrims.

IDK vs. HS yesterday was a match of epic proportions. Definitely the most exciting scrim I've seen to date. Part one, and Part two.

Euros right now are playing with a comp ruleset that I really really wish US would embrace.

-No more than one shrike.
-No whiteout nades.
-No inf capping.
-No flag reach.
-No tac/orbital strikes (because of the lack of team damage)

Also, HiRez is at NASL today. HiRezBart will be featuring zfz vs. Tao at the booth. It *should* be broadcasted on Tribescast.com, but will update if it is somewhere else. Tao and zfz will end up playing mostly by the Euro ruleset just because we have similar playstyles. For sure will be an awesome game. Starts at 6:30 PST.

I tried the game once again after the disappointing first versions, and damn... it's a whole lot better when everyone has easy access to all the classes.
It actually is a good Tribes game when everybody is not playing the poor medium class. It's the most fun I had since the heyday of tribes 2. It makes me want to go competitive again, 10 years later.

Why did they lock the classes at all? That the stupidest design decision I ever saw.

They're following the League of Legends example.

The unlocking of classes is essentially a way to ease players into the fairly complex system that exists once everything is available. Right now, it's not readily seen since Ranked servers aren't in, which adds that second element of placing you with players based on a modified ELO with time played as a major factor.

The switch to items/perks/weapons is a good way to do it without making players feel limited. Too be honest, in pubs, the 'upgrades' don't really make a significant difference at all. The complex loadouts only really matter in comp situations where there are organized strats. For example, the Tech thumper is taken in situations where you are going to be faced with Flag Standoffs (that is, both teams have each other's flag) and you need to be able to bounce it to prevent the enemy from grabbing it once your carrier is killed. I've never seen an organized standoff happen in a pub.

Goal #1 is to get lots of players. In today's competitive environment, you can't do that by selling a boxed copy unless you have the marketing budget of Activision/EA/THQ/Ubi. League of Legend's model is the best possible one to emulate.

Also, zfz vs. Tao last night is going to be edited as well as a post game interview with yours truly, and will be put up on NASL.tv in the next week as a promotional game for T:A as an E-Sport. Very exciting times.

I feel like tribes can be that flag bearer that e-sports has been looking for on the FPS front (at least for PC gaming). Something I would like to see in the spectate options would be instant replay of flag caps and crucial points of the match and split screen when people are running the flags at the same time. Extra polishing features such as these could really add to the depth of the spectating experience that is already great.

I agree with all of this.

One of the things they are attempting to do with our match from Monday is actually edit it to go over this stuff. They had like three people spectating/recording to grab different angles. Quite excited to see it.

As the casters and announcers get to know each other a bit more, as well as up their organization on how each match is covered, I'm sure we'll see more of it.

Gotta get them flags!

The first match for me (well, 2nd technically. 1st actual game i joined ended before i could do anything) I got 10 kills, 1 death (me accidentally suiciding lol). First time ever playing a Tribes game and i kicked butt in my first match. :p It's pretty fun i gotta admit.
