GAF Plays: Mass Effect series (unmarked spoilers)

The Cerberus code only gives Zaeed and the Firewalker missions. Everything else is paid DLC that is not included with it. If the code is indeed expired... well you're out of luck for free Zaeed and Firewalker missions.

So I picked up the PC version yesterday and I think I might have wasted my Cerberus Network code. The first time I turned it on it asked for the code, so I put it in--but none of the included DLC is there. So, I went to the EA Store from the ingame menu and saw that there was an option for Cerberus Network Promo Code but when I enter it there it says it's already been used.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Zaed, Kasumi, and return to the destroyed Normandy should all be available from the outset right?

Does the code include the last DLC (I think it's Arrival) that links ME2 to 3 story wise? That's really the only one I'm concerned about because I've already played the other stuff on PS3.

Maybe the "free stuff" part of the code is expired? It does say code expires Jan 1, 2012... that's probably it right.. =(

Go to the BioWare Social Network and log in. On the left side, under your profile picture, go to Profile -> Your registered game content. If the Cerberus Network code worked you should see your DLC listed and can download it manually.

Ah, PC DLC for Mass Effect 2 is clunky at best.

Try looking here: http://social.bioware.com/user_entitlements.php

You'll need to log in, I think with your EA account, and if you got the DLC it'll be there. Download the installer for each and install it.

Playing through the DLC one more time before ME3 comes out because I haven't yet with my third character. I see a lot of love for Lair of the Shadow Broker, but man, I think Overlord was probably my favorite piece of DLC.

When the VI takes over and you see things in the orange "matrix" view, it's just so unexpected and awesome. And the story twist near the end is great as well.

Feros and Pinnacle Station finished. Time to finish up my few remaining sidequests and then tackle the big three (Virmire - Ilos - Citadel). Awesome.

Just killed all of Legion's geth. And I've told the quarian guy to go to war. They are screwed.

And what's the point of rewriting the heretic Geth anyway? The majority are in the quarian homeland, right? And they're crazy. They are all crazy, just kill them all

Thinking about marathoning a ME 1 and ME 2 playthrough on my new PC. I saw the mods posted in the OP for two, but what are some good mods for the first game?

Welp, getting nailed by the audio cut-out bug on the N7 mission Blue Suns Base. It's super annoying, since going to guide repairs the audio for a second, but it doesn't last.

Oh, my. Got the Claymore and Heavy Charge on my Vanguard in ME2. It moves me into shotgun range, slows time, and completely refills my shield? So... what's the catch? It's pretty hilarious to do, but I can see getting overwhelmed. Poor Harbinger, though. "ASSUMING DIRECT CONT-" *SMACK!* *BOOM* I have found that Charging Heavy Mechs is a bad plan, though. I assume I'll have trouble with large amounts of husks, too, well, except I got Improved Shockwave for that.

The only thing I don't quite get about this class is... what do I do against the final boss when I get that far? That's not exactly a melee friendly encounter. My Solider and Infiltrator playthroughs were easy. Shoot it until it dies. (Widow to the eye!), but I don't really see what a Vanguard has that isn't blocked by Armor and that works at that range. Going to be a bit sad if all I got is the SMG.

Oh and speaking of Vanguard, I took Barrier as my bonus at creation, but with Heavy Charge it's a bit redundant. Thinking Warp Ammo might be good, or one of the Biotic capstone abilities. Got a suggestion?

I've never taken a Vanguard all the way through, but I have done some damage to the lil' Reaper with just the SMG. It just takes a little longer to wear it down.

Should be particularly effective with the Locust, which works pretty well from a distance.

Warp Ammo is super useful. Should also consider Samara's Reave.

I finally received my copy of "Deception". In Germany it is translated by the famous Mick Schnelle, but I think he translated the errors as well. ;)

Do you guys have some screens (or an "unboxing" video) from the art book "Art of the Mass Effect Universe"?

Playing ME2 for the second time and it's so good. This time I decided to get on the PS3, I'm happy to be playing the DLC for the first time.

Don't ask me why, but my second play is getting much more interesting for me, even if I had some other games on my backlog I will end this one first again.

Just one question, what I really want this time is to have a good final mission, keep all my crew members alive. Where can I find the best info to do this? Last time I had even people dying before getting in the suicide mission. Jack was hit inside the ship, so I want to do a perfect mission this time. I believe it's all about sending the right crew member to do the right thing in the right place.

Please, help me with this one fellow GAFfers, I still have some hours ahead but I want to know what I can do this time.

I've always used reave as my bonus ability, really good to top of your health when going in melee range.

And on the subject of the last boss, take the Cain heavy weapon with you. It's a one-shot kill if you hit it in the eyes.

That has everything you need to know.

Here you go.

This is beyond amazing, thank you kind sir.

EDIT: There is a part regarding "The Crew" that I'm not quite understanding it. Should I do no missions at all once it's possible to go to Omega-4 Relay? Sorry, I'm confused.

Once your crew is kidnapped, if you do ANY missions, and I'm talking ANY, your crew (but not squad) will begin dying.

What this means practically is that the safest course is to simply do literally everything you can do (minus DLC stuff like Shadow Broker or Arrival) prior to retrieving the IFF. Once you get the IFF, you set off an invisible clock.

Oh man, I really wanted to participate in this thread but I got distracted by my mountain of unplayed games that continues to grow due to my weakness. I finished a Mass Effect playthrough a few months ago but I never continued into ME 2 with that character. Maybe I'll just jump in there.

Oh, great. I knew I did it right when I told my crew mates to keep building my team since it was the best option, I think I did not went that way on my first play.

Thanks a lot, I'll do everything I can (even trying to find that whisky to the Doc, which I never did since I never know where to get it).

Join us! Well, I also have a not-so-big backlog but I wanted to give this one another go before ME3 arrives at my home.

Can be found in Afterlife on Omega.

think that I will replay ME1 this weekend and kill off ashley and finally hit level 60 or whatever it is for that cheese mint, no idea why I never did that, and maybe doing most of the citadel missions achievement too.

Whenever I go back to replay ME2, I clear the cache so I can level up my Shepard abilites for everything. Made insanity a little bit easier

Warp Ammo is super useful. Should also consider Samara's Reave.

I've always used reave as my bonus ability, really good to top of your health when going in melee range.

So I tried out Reave as my bonus power for my Vanguard. Wasn't really sold on it, except that it works on Armor and Barriers. Then I did Kasumi's loyalty mission. Ran low on rockets during the gunship fight, so I tried out Reave since that affects armor, too. It hurt more than the rockets did. I then proceeded to tear the gunship apart with my mind.

So... power approved. That should help with the final boss, too. I might just only use Reave on it, just to say I killed a Reaper by thinking hard at it. And Charge keeps on being fun. What a stupid power, in the good way. And with a Locust in hand for range and the krogan shotgun for close up, it's a pretty nice package now. Only thing I don't have an answer for is shields. Well, the general answer of "CHARGE! SHOTGUN!" still works, so it'll have to do if no one on the team has Overload.

The partial exception to this is Legion. If you do all other loyalty missions before getting Legion, then once you speak with Legion he will give you his loyalty mission, which does not penalize you with dead crew (assuming it is the only thing you do).

I had no idea you could go back to the Shadow Broker base for additional scenes. Even more impressed now. The final discussion is really well done. They should have given this writer a bigger part of ME3's dialogue.

At least on the bright side: Not all of ME3 will be shitty! Because he wrote the banter, the best part of LotSB for a few characters.

The Azure banter still gets me.

Okay, Mass Effect 1 and 2 are on sale now on Amazon.

Disregarding story, which one is better? I don't mind skipping 1 if 2 is better.

If you get ME2 with the backstory comic thing, you can set up a file to import for ME3, so that would be a nice bonus.

Personally I think ME2 is a better game, but the story is better in the first. Thing is the actual plot in this series is totally dumb, so it hardly matters to me.

Get both. Importing a Shepard is part of the fun.

Overall, ME2 is the better vidya game. It's much more polished and has much better gameplay. ME1 has a better storyline, though ME2 does beat it on characters.

Though, I would get both. They are both fantastic games.

Okay what the hell. I started a new game with Arrival installed for the first time and the quest has activated fairly early on in the main quest. Isn't it supposed to take place after the end of the main quest?

^Arrival and Shadow Broker open up post-Horizon. They be played before or after the final mission. It makes more sense to play after, and this is reflected in the narrative.

I have the PS3 version and redeemed the Cerberus Network code and have the DLC associated with that. But the Cerberus Network computer itself, is not accessible.
Any reason for this?

My copy of Mass Effect 2 got FUBAR'd by my Xbox, just as I completed it (moved console, circle scratch etc.). Unlucky, but also lucky depending how you look at it.

Either way, I'm all set for Mass Effect 3 now.

ME1/ME2 playthrough
Max Level on either (60/30)
Mostly Paragon (Paragon Bar full on ME2)
Wrex saved, Kaiden saved
Released the Rachni
Killed the Council
Anderson is head of Council
All team members loyal, except for Zaeed.
All team members (including Chakwas and Chambers) survived the Suicide Mission
Blew up Collector Base, because fuck the Illusive Man.

Now just obsessively playing the ME3 demo and waiting for March 9th like a madman.

I should get on board. For some reason I couldn't fully get in to the Mass Effects. I only really appreciated the action bits in 2 and the Mako driving in 1, which seem to be the parts people generally dislike.

Lol, I've had the game for almost five years now and this is the first time I realized you can infiltrate Saren's base on Virmire through the sewer system, too. :lol

?!?

Say whatttt?

Yeah, when you reach the entrance to the base, you can either go to the right (which is where I always went), and go in through the front doors. But you can also go to the left, and head back down onto the sand again. A bit away from there there's a locked door that leads into the sewers. That way, you enter the base almost immediately next to the area with the indoctrinated salarians.

Oh, and speaking of which, I just found out that you can talk to the captive salarians you see when you cross an upper walkway in a room in the base, too. I thought they were there for flavor, but there's a door beside the elevator in the elevator room you can follow down and into their room, where you can set them all free.

How I never discovered this sooner is pretty baffling. :lol

Yeah I knew about the Salarian. I was like "He's going to turn... he's really going to turn". And yeah, sure enough, when I let them free they went apeshit. And... somehow managed to acquire pistols even though they were locked in a cell. (?)

I finished Feros, Noveria and most of Cillalel's missions. Really liking ME1 but like when I originally played, I don't find planet exploration as fun as the Cilladel, Feros, Noveria.

Yeah, no, I'm talking about the other ones. There's that group, and then there's another group, the one I mentioned, that you can actually set free without them turning on you.

First time seeing this myself. And completed the games 3 times.

The ones in the room at the end of the video.
