nm. Duki covered it. And that was basically why he said he wanted no part of it. Guy was making good $$$ at the end with the lakers, no need to live in utter frustration.

I think that's probably the reason why Nash won't leave Phoenix. He knows that once he's away from their medical staff, his back is going to give out and he'll have to retire.

The short of it is, he doesn't have to. He's a proven winner, as a head coach.

It helps that he's had insane amounts of talent.

But he does win.

If he walked over to NY/Chicago/Minny/OKC and said "oh yup, sign me up". They fire everybody.
 
Personally, I think Pop is a better coach than Phil. Phil always had legendary NBA talent to coach. Granted, Pop had Duncan, but look at what Pop has done with the Spurs line up over the past three or four years. Washed up Duncan, Matt Bonner, no true center to speak of, constantly injured Ginobili, etc. and they're still solid teams that can contend.

I think that is an argument I can definitely agree with. Pop develops talent whereas Phil tempers talent.

I now respect Pop more than any active coach in the NBA.

That wasn't the case in 2003 though >:(
 
Pop is the only coach that doesn't have a specific gameplan that defines his coaching. With Phil, it's the Triangle, Sloan-pick and roll..etc... He seems to be the best at really figuring what his players' strengths are and catering to that..
 
Phil wants #12.

I think he's gonna wait and see what happens with the Knicks but I could see him coming back to them if they show signs of rounding into form.

Pop is the greatest coach I have ever watched. I don't know about Red and all them because they are before my time, but I can't imagine how anyone could feasibly be better than Pop. Hes got it all.

I respect Phil for the most part too. I have a hard time differentiating whether his success comes from him, his assistants (notably Tex), or his players, but the results are there. I see him make far more mistakes than Pop though, and he has a lot of bad coaching habits. The way he turns players against one another, his minute management, and the way he ignores developing and teaching young guys bothers me. Thats only a few complaints, and I have a lot, but I personally can't see an argument for him over Pop. I think Pop's "family" atmosphere is the most conducive to winning, and I think all the drama and baggage that Phil carries is truly harmful long-term.

Phil coaches with fear (kinda like Kobe), while Pop coaches with love. If Pop ever feels one of his players is disrespected, hes getting tossed. I don't see the same type of passion from Phil, and in the end I think it makes him seem esoteric and hard to talk to for players. He sits on a fucking throne during games ffs.

Though I will say that Pop having a guy like Duncan really helped. Duncan is a hell of a leader, and I think a lot of the attributes that characterize a Popovich team come from Duncan as much as Pop
 
From watching and reading about the old Celtic teams, I wouldn't put Red that close to Pop even relative to era. Auerbach seemed to have a pretty terrible offensive system.

I've watched 90% of all the games Gregg Popovich has coached in the NBA so I think I'm a decent source for this:

He surprises me with every game. He has a constantly evolving system, and he drastically changes it from year to year. Hes had 4 major revisions (early Duncan-Robinson, 2002-2004, 2005-2009, 2010-2012) with more minor changes with each era...

He incredibly flexible. Not set in his ways at all. I think he could coach any type of team and succeed.

I think Pop is the best coach for a small market. If okc REALLY wanted to win, the best thing they could do is drive a dump truck full of cash up to pops house.

But Phil is a proven winner, and one of the best at managing massive MASSIVE ego's.

I've resolved myself to the inevebility of Pop leaving but I hope he stays for at least one full season of scrubs after Duncan/Manu retire and Parker is traded; I'd be interested to see if he can continue the 50 streak without any talent at all.

I actually think he can. Take away the big 3 but give Pop a training camp and a full summer with the scrubs and the Spurs are still probably a 45-50 win team despite the garbage roster.

Out of Steve Nash's draft class really only Nash, Kobe, and maybe Camby are producing at a high level. And they were drafted 16 years ago. Utterly crazy. And really Nash could just be a back up, spot up 3 bomber and play for 4 more years and make it 20

We really need to have a day that we do pick 'em. It's always a random day of the week it seems. Wednesday seems a day NBA has alot of games, so it should be today. Anyone agree?

I'm not sure Nash could ever resolve him self to being a backup. I think the guys drive to win is too much that he couldn't just do it on someone elses coat tails.
