Tribes Ascend Beta Thread: Shazbot!

I started playing half an hour ago. I haven't played online in friggin' years and I got 4 kills in the last two rounds! I need advice for a noob mistake - I keep picking up the repair gun as a solider and I can't get my AR back. What does it do? If the red cross is the repair gun, how do I heal? And do level unlocks take a really long time?

For people who are interested in both game balance and the comp scene, do yourself a favor and listen to Spinfusor Podcast Ep 2. Hosted by Arcadizz1e (sniper for wai), featuring HiRezBart, Creature (one of the best cappers out there, team idk), and zfz.RedSpider (our capper).

Health will generate on its own after a little while. As for repairing - use the gun to repair base items like generators or even teammates. Also to get your items back head to an ammo station.

Thanks for the heads up Archie

ATLANTA - February 28, 2012 -- This week, the professional e-Sports North American Star League (NASL) celebrates the Open Beta of Tribes: Ascend by airing the first exhibition matches for NASL Season 3.

The first night of Tribes: Ascend streaming will be Wednesday 2/29 at 8pm PST / 11pm EST on www.nasl.tv.

Night two will begin after Starcraft II, Thursday 3/1 at 8pm PST / 11pm EST.

This week’s matches feature top European and North American teams, shoutcasted from the NASL studio.

"Tribes: Ascend is a very fast-paced, skill-based shooter," says Todd Harris, Hi-Rez Studios COO. "We prioritized spectator mode early in Beta to support the competitive community. This week’s NASL broadcast is really the kick-off of Tribes: Ascend as an eSport. These team rosters include some of the world’s best Tribes players and we look forward to intense games."

Now in Open Beta, Tribes: Ascend has already seen:

Over 350,000 accounts created
Active servers supporting growing communities in North America, Europe, Australia, Brazil and Asia
Over 200 competitive scrimmage matches, with over 30 teams representing more than 10 countries, leading up to this week’s NASL broadcast.
"We are excited to add truly compelling FPS content to our eSports lineup," says Russel Pfister, North American Star League CEO. "Already broadcasting exciting content five nights a week, NASL is looking forward to showcasing Tribes: Ascend as an eSport with the high quality production NASL is known for and that this epic title deserves."

I believe the matchups were:
zfz vs Tao of Tribe
Stack n Hack vs Deadstop
I dont know? vs Hindsight

I am excite!! And will definitely be tuning in! Good Luck to ZFZ!
Thanks!

More info here as well.

This week’s matches feature top European and North American teams, shoutcasted from the NASL studio. The first match on Wednesday will feature ZFZ (zfz) facing Tao of Tribe (istao). Afterweard, Grumpy Old Vets (GoV) will face off against Working as Intended (wai). On Thursday, Boats n Hoes (BnH) will fight Area 51 (a51), followed by Stack n Hack (SnH) facing off against Deadstop (.ds).

The quality of these casts should be quite phenomenal. They're not live, but have been edited to emulate a highly produced live sport event. Very excited to see them! Though, I could have sworn Hindsight vs. idk? was one of the scrims, kind of upset they didn't put it up. At this point, Euros are generally a lot more fun to watch than NA due to a ruleset they use.

Just finished watching this Bo5 through the VoDs on Tribescast and I have to say it was some of the most exciting play I have seen to date. Some of the time in the scrims one team gets crunched and its not that exciting but these games were very evenly matched and a must watch for anyone who enjoys exciting Esports play!

And as a bonus you can get an idea of how to run very nice flag routes by watching the pros.

The most important thing to note, is that this comp community is so young. For the folks that think to themselves "I'd like to but comp players are out of my league", this is something that anyone can get into right now.

Area 51, who just came on the scene a few weeks ago is already right up there with the best of them. Even the Reddit Tribe, which reformed into Egocentric, is hugely competitive. That was a group of pubbers that decided to start playing comp.

The thing that is so great about Tribes CTF is that there are so many positions. Deadstop, for example, has only one player that would be any good in a DM/arena type game like Quake Live. However, they are one of the best teams out there because they have tight coordination.

So, come on and have some fun. The game is still young.

Should i be saving my double XP booster for a Double XP weekend or something? (if it ever happends)

I would say use it when you know your going to be doing alot of playing with friends to get some more wins to increase your bonus.

Fun matches to watch tonight even though a few of them were crunches.

My name in-game is ItAintEasy. Friend me join up and have fun! We need to get some GAF'ers playing together because this game is too good not to have an in-house community for it.

SMG destroys face. Grenades good for clearing flag. Whiteout nades give you a pretty good speed boost without doing much damage. Generally only used as clearer right now in comp.

I think the matches were great. Missed the Hindsight idk? match but will check out the vods per your advice.

I hope that when the dust clears from these early matches in beta and we start to see some real tournaments that they adopt the 8v8 rule set rather than the 7v7. For my money its just more enjoyable because with that one extra person people can run 2 cappers in their offense and thus there will be more flag movement which leads to more stand offs which leads to more clutch plays and more tense moments (aka better entertainment!!!)

Playing this, having a blast for the most part (but uuuugh i hate these ultra-grind unlock systems). Amazed that despite not playing Tribes 2 in like 8 years a lot comes back naturally.

Katabatic is still a mockery of its former self, though. ;_;

I did something stupid. I blew all my gold on 48000XP and 100000XP unlocks, not that it was stupid. But i didn't leave enough Gold for when they release skins, which i assume will be Gold only.

I've gotten seriously addicted to this over the weekend!

Just like in Tribes 1 I love playing defence, especially as a Technician with two turrets :)

Hve been fooling around with infiltrator too. Feels sooooo good when you destroy the enemey generator, cloak and then knife whoever comes to repair it :D

Sorry for the likely simple nature of this question, but does this game feel more like Tribes 1 or Tribes 2?

The replays of the scrimmages look fantastic, but there seems to be a lot less emphasis on securing the generator in this game than how it was in Tribes 1. I'm assuming this is because players don't spawn 'nude' anymore?

Heh. This is when I switch to Raider with the Jammer pack on defense. Always catches the Infiltrators off guard ;)

Ughhh has anyone run into the flag glitch? No one on my team could grab the flag at all. Suuucked. Luckily we had 3 up on the bad guys before it started happening.

Well, I thought I had a screen of me trying to pick the damn thing up, but I guess cntl+Prt Scr only gives me a black screen. Fuck. Next time I'll just keep fraps on.

I watched a scrim where the flag dropped through the floor costing them 2 caps. That would have pissed me off a bit.

Is there a comprehensive list of streams/teams available?

Downloading patch 0.1.809.0, it's about 300mb.

Patch notes, only link I could find:

SERVER DOWNTIME: The Tribes Servers are expected to be down for a number of hours on MONDAY, MARCH 5, 2012 while the patch is deployed. Watch the Server Status on the game loader for the latest availability information.

IN ADDITION, we expect to do several server restarts on MONDAY MARCH 5 as we stress test some elements of the game. Thanks in advance for your patience.

Major Highlights:

-Badges are now awarded as you achieve certain milestones inside of the game. Each badge has multiple ranks (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Obisidian). You earn bonus XP each time you rank up a badge. You may view available and earned badges, as well as accolades and general stats, through the Profile menu broken down by subsections. Note that this system is still a work in progress, and some items are not yet fully complete. In addition, some bugs and issues should be expected.

-Two new perks have been added (see below for more).

-A new Team Deathmatch map has been added (Outskirts).

I question this change alot

Arena now unlocks as a playable mode at Level 8.

Who does this benefit?

In smaller countries like Australian you need all the community you can muster for those niche modes.

It just brings back those COD level locked playlists to memory, noone ever gave a shit about some of the best modes out there because everybody was conditioned just to play TDM from the get go.

If the opposing team has a good Sentinel or a good Shrike pilot, I just quit outright. There is absolutely nothing I can do in such a situation. I am entirely dependant on them fucking up to be able to do anything with their flag. It might not be a problem in a competitive match, beause with good team work and tactics you can overcome such obstacles, but there is no such team work on public servers.

I am mostly enjoying the game, as long as I do not run into a good Sentinel/Shrike pilot, but this just kills it.
