well, i guess i should say something like "at least it's only first degree burns" but that doesn't really seem like an appropriate response to me for a kid being doused in gasoline and set ablaze.
can we be sure this is a race crime? i mean, were there any details like the attackers calling him names of some sort? or is it just assumed because of the races of the people involved?

Perhaps the reason why a story of a minority (lets say black man) being attacked is more sensitive is because its interpreted beyond the incident itself, it becomes an indication of our progression as an integrated society and thus incidents of racism towards minorities invoke a wider historical context (often emotive) rather than being about the particular victim(s).
And if so, maybe the reason why minorities being perpetrators of hate crimes don't get as much attention is because it doesn't fit a pre-established narrative; there is nothing to attach it to in a similar way.

Black people are very rarely charged with hate crimes, even when they are hate crimes. I doubt anyone is going to disagree with that. I mean, it took a massive public outcry just to have police consider hate crimes during the MASSIVE, purely race motivated incident at the Wisconsin state fair.
Now lets look at it like this. How many times have you been watching World Star Hiphop, and saw a black guy sucker punch a white guy and call him a cracker or another stupid term. Thats not a hate crime, thats someone getting knocked out and someone yelling racist that at them. He is not getting fucked up because of his race. However, when the roles are reversed, white people are charged with hate crimes.
This is known. There have been former police officers who have written books and done interviews about it (it also has to do with district stats).
A big reason for this is the double standard that was created due to the huge amount of race motivated violence that used to happen in America. White people have done some very terrible things to black people in America, and thus get jumped on the moment anything can be considered motivated by race, even when it clearly is not.
We dont have tons of hate crimes in Canada. I know many Americans from all races. I watch American news, and read American news. All I can say is, from someone looking in from the outside. There are clearly double standards in your media, that are so blatantly obvious I don't get how people ignore them. This is not the ONLY double standard, and some go the other way(kidnappings), it's just the one we are talking about here.

Maybe I am just not seeing it, but as someone who has spent a significant amount of time in the US and Canada I have not noticed much of a difference between news outlets such as CNN and CBC. But I don't watch the news that much, so maybe I am just not seeing what you are seeing. It is all anecdotal anyway without real facts.

I was lucky in that I was about 3 houses down from the house of a friend I was walking with (the person threw the stuff on me from a window in a building) so I got to my friend's place fast enough and rinsed the hell out of my eyes. I also wear glasses so a lot of it landed on them (not to mention it was thrown from a second floor window...to be fair it wasn't so much "in my eyes" as "on my face"). We ended up going to the house with the police, but didn't press charges, mostly because I was scared to death of retaliation.

1. Nothing I said was belligerent. Stop using words you don't understand.

This was during the Iowa state fair. It was "Beat Whitey night". No hate crime charges were filed. The same thing happened in Wisconsin, and hate crime charges were only investigated.
My point is. All hate crime is awful. Like in Canada, it should ALL be prosecuted the exact same way. It should ALL be covered based on it's severity.

It is curious how videos of crimes being done by blacks to whites seem to propagate across the Internet at ridiculous speeds. It's almost as if such videos are considered commonplace on the Internet, so much so that it affects the casual reporting of such crimes at a local level.
It's almost as if there's a website that collects videos like this, and aggregates them, along with hip hop videos and their stars, all over the world.
But it's weird...you'd think links to such a world star hip hop site would be posted on places like this forum often, and we'd comment on the apparently high occurrence of black criminality on video.
Wouldn't that'd be wild if such a site was popular...and even wilder if it was run by another black guy?

When I was in high school, I had some particularly hateful ass-hats attending the elementary school down the street. In the winter, they'd pack snowballs with ice in the middle and throw them at people - and I was no exception. Parents never did anything - or if they did, it only encouraged them. Sucked because I wanted nothing more than to beat the shit out of them but they were maybe nine or ten and I was 16 and I would have been the one in trouble.

Although his last name is coon, so MAYBE he was talking on the phone to somebody and had to tell them his name. So the two black teens see a white kid walking around saying coon and think he is a racist.
But still, even in that hypothetical scenario you could not imagine a normal human being reacting like this. Something is very wrong with these two teens and I would like to see them go away for as long as possible.

Likely not. I was tormented in elementary school (you'd think being on welfare in a poor white neighborhood wouldn't make you such a target of harassment but I learned that the hard way) so my tolerance of bullying regardless of age is rather low.
I was in school while that first event happened... Man, the entire thing just sounded unreal. Like something out of a horror movie.

It is all about history. Why does everyone seem to think that this stuff just appeared overnight. Those guys came from an era where they were needed to make a noise because stuff happening against blacks wouldn't have been news at all. This is just as bad of a question as asking why Affirmative action was needed.
And there will always be a problem in that respect. The news and the media, is not really representative of what goes on in the country. Only major incidents get nationwide attention and only seriously inflammatory stuff seem to go international.
I grew up in the south. I have seen more racist incidents than I would care to. I can definitely point out the dependency between real incidents and what is reported and even more so, the stuff that is local vs the stuff that goes nationwide.
There is no "Double standard" in real life situations. Black folks get the extra attention from cops depending on where they live. Innocent people get guns drawn on them and forced against cars like criminals, yet people "outside" of the nation seem to think that black people get away with stuff and cops seem to take it easy on them.
If you are a black person, I simply encourage you to go to a major city and drive around the different area's. From the poorest to the richest, and see if you don't get some attention for DWB. The state of affairs in the US and why people get so inflamed is not because of "false" reports, it is because the tensions are still there despite people wanting to ignore it, or people who are ignorant of it because of ethnic makeup of where they live.
