Mass Effect 3 review thread

On PC, limiting your frame-rate to 30fps does a lot to make the Reaper invasion look less like a carny ride and cut scenes look less like a soap opera.
Seriously? Limiting the framerate to 30 fps to improve the game? Is that actually what you are suggesting?

Wow, what's up with IGN's review page? It's almost as horrid as The Verge's.

Like everybody guessed, this is turning to be a bad case of score inflation that'll settle down in a year...

Future of web page design. Easier to read on tablet devices.

Only surprise was the 10 from Gies. I know he likes shooters... but that bald motherfucker is pretty picky with stuff. Bravo, BW.

Now im off to sleep fucking 5am.

And there is no reason to read any reviews that don't play vanguard ;P

Actually no, not "everybody". Some of us actually believe a reviewer that gave a game a high score <GASP> really enjoyed the game. But there I go not being jaded again. I loved The Verge's review. They even provided music to read the review to, and it was awesome.

Too bad Jeff felt a bit disappointed by it, though I did feel his review was pretty favorable overall (at least for the single player). Curious to hear what the rest of the Giant Bomb crew thinks about it. As for the rest of the reviews, damn, there's some high praise going around there.

These days it's almost impossible for a massively hyped game to get bad reviews at launch. I'd even say hyperbolic language is increasingly the norm.

Part of that is because the money involved not only makes the game a media event, but ensures that unless there's a colossal screwup in the development process the game is unlikely to be objectively bad. Part of it is that there isn't a culture of hyper critical, or highly critical, videogame reviewing, because a whole lot of factors don't incentivise that kind of approach to videogame reviews.

Another recent example is Skyrim, which I personally think does a lot of things really well but it obviously had its fair share of faults, and upon reflection I don't think even reviewers regard it in as glowing terms as they did at launch.

Holy shit, some of those metacritic user reviews are genuinely disturbing. Anthropologically fascinating, but disturbing nonetheless.

Besides the weapon mods, the player also has to deal with weapon weight -- the more weapons Shepard carries, the longer the global cooldown for using powers. Do you carry nothing more than a sniper rifle and a pistol while rapidly cloaking and using Incinerate? Or do you lug an extra submachine gun or shotgun at the cost of using powers less frequently?
This is what I like to hear

Mass Effect 3 is so much more than a game. It blends genres and transcends the video game medium to offer up an experience unparalleled in this industry. This game will easily be a front-runner for Game of the Year and is in my mind a serious contender for being the best game of this generation.

From a banned site, apparently.

Sigh. Its March for Gods sake.

Sigh. Its March for Gods sake.

An intelligent person would read that and understand that if the game was the best title he'd played all generation that it would also stand a good chance of being one of his best games of this year.

I'm not. I don't like the way this game's cutscenes look at 60fps.

oh :(

but not that there's anything wrong with it as long as you like it that way, just usually thinks it's weird, because while 30fps isn't that bad, the debate on the soap opera effect is often between 24fps and 30fps, and being 24 or lower can become more and more distracting

edit: oh and you mean cutscenes

Judging from the reviews this is the best thing since bread came sliced.

But then I remember the Mass Effect 2 reviews.

Maybe that is truthfully his opinion? Mass Effect 2 won loads of GOTY awards, and came out the same time of year if I am not mistaken? January maybe?

You are lucky you did not read the bioware forums before their zero-tolerance policy.
And that was even before the game was out.

I read about it being "so much more than a game" and "transcends the video game medium" and his quote about it being March to imply that they should have written that nonsense on April 1st. Early contender for game of the year though? Sure, why not.

So no one sees the slippery slope? Unprofessional, ravenous and down right dangerous implications of More than a game? Transcends? The hyperbole is laughable, no one should be taken serious after such nonsense.

Maybe I'm too old for this, but its all nauseating now, ad infinitum.

Release: "RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE. REDEFINES WHAT IT MEANS TO BE ALIVE. NEVER AGAIN WILL I FEEL THIS WAY."

9 months later: "It's pretty good, but has a lot of flaws. GotY maybe"

1 month before Mass Effect 4: "Eh, I hope they do better this time. The writing in the last one was fucking terrible, they simplified it so much, and the combat was so behind other games in the genre."

(You can call this the "GTA4 Effect" if you want.)

Sounds like Peter Molyneux

Your hyperbolic, hyper sensitive reactions to reviews of a game you haven't played yet would be hilarious if I didn't also think you were being serious.

Until I have played the game, he could be entirely correct with his thoughts.... so for now, I will have to take their word on it, and call it out if I think it's utter rubbish once the credits start rolling.

Welcome to five years ago?

It's extremely common. Happens to most exclusive games.

Popular games too, this happens even with films, I remember a lot of backlash for popular films that were winning awards and such, kind of annoying since I actually read some of the user reviews

So nothing released in Q1 is eligible for GOTY consideration? As you say "sigh".

Yes, yes, YES, SO FUCKING RIGHT

Mass Effect 3 is on every single platform known to man.

I know, just mentioned specifically seeing exclusive games always go through it. Especially remember Littlebigplanet getting hit hard and having the PS3 people vote down Gears 2, starting wars of completely useless score lowering.

In this case, /v/ hates bioware and are going to vote down the game on metacritic on every platform...then buy the game new to bitch about it.

;p

I love Bioware and the ME games. I'm just poking fun. But these reviews do seem pretty ridiculous. I haven't played the final game, yet, though... so I'll reserve real judgement until later this week.

5 years later: "This game has aged poorly."

Er...what's the last game with a big budget that got poor reviews on day 1? It's impossible in this day and age. Professional reviews ain't worth shit.

Its not even about a "poor" score. Its more about trusted professionals not coming off as paid feverous zealots, chanting forth the will of the hype beast.

Your hyperbolic, hyper sensitive reactions to reviews of a game you haven't played yet would be hilarious if I didn't also think you were being serious.

Of course he's serious, and also right. It happens with every huge AAA game (remember "Oscar quality story"). Reviewers fall prey to the hype and take off their critic glasses to become raving fanboys using such ridiculous language that it's hard to believe they're talking about a video game and not a religious awakening.

It's really not that strange or tangled. They used to be one of the premier developers of CRPGs. Now they are not, and along the way they lost a lot of loyalty.

I thought they still were. I thought they were number one besides Bethesda (or Blizzard). The problem with Bioware is its employees easily get involved with internet drama and respond to trolling. Bethesda never bothered to address the NMA zealots.
