Agreed, but it doesn't change the fact that Forstall and Schiller don't have the right personalities to be the pitchmen for the biggest tech company in the world. They need someone who isn't acting on stage. Schiller acts when he presents. Forstall acts when he presents. Cook appears genuine. I suspect Ive would be genuine.

What was great about Steve is that he being a pitchman and a charismatic guy is who he was. They need to find a guy who can at least talk the talk on stage. I just think Ive could be that guy.

Edit: I think you guys are overstating the importance of having a guy involved with a particular aspect of the product be the presenter. Steve could demo iOS without being the guy in charge of running it day to day. Anyone can. You or I could. It's about being a face to the public, not being the guy behind the curtain making it all work. Steve was lucky enough to be both. At the end of the day they need a genuine showman on the stage to capture people's imaginations again.

Yeah, Ive oozes charisma, just like Jobs did. Just watch any of his hardware videos, or even when he spoke about Jobs at the Apple campus memorial. His speech was the only one listening to IMO, there's a visceral intensity and passion to the way he speaks that's lacking in any other public figure I've seen at Apple. Only Scott Forstall comes close, but there's still a wide gap. Schiller? Zero charisma on stage.

Which begs the question of what Jonathan Ive has been doing for the past 2 years or so. The last redesigned hardware from Apple was the iPad 2, which I'm assuming was nailed down design wise by the end of 2009 or so. And not like that was a complex project from a HW to begin with.. basically just a different back cover. The 4S was externally identical to the 4. Mac hardware hasn't been touched in years. Neither have the iPods. The iPad 3 will be almost identical to the 2. So what the hell has Ive been doing everyday for the past 2+ years? Hopefully we see the fruits of his labour soon in the form of redesigned Mac hardware, but honestly it seems the guy must not have had alot on his plate for the past while. Gone are the days of quirky, dramatic redesigns. From here on external changes will be extremely incremental. I wonder if he'll be motivated to move on. I hope not.

I think you're really selling Schiller short. He's always done a good job. Not as good as Steve, but nobody can. Certainly good enough.

Forstall will be ready with some more practice and another promotion.

Don't get me wrong, I like Cook. And I don't doubt the capabilities to sell as a team. I just fear a little that it won't be as watchable. Could be a good thing, as the product takes a more prominent place, as opposed to Steve Jobs' weight.

I mean look at iPhone 4S. It was a bit of a boring announcement, in my opinion. Could've just been the device itself though. I mean, awesome product and all, but really, just incremental.

Here's how I see it:

Ive - love his style and humour, and he even has a bit of salesmanship, but not so my ch for actually using it.
forstall - I think he has the closest to overall package for showing off a product. Clearly enthusiastic, knows his stuff, but he's not quite as charming or have as much flair.
Schiller - feels. I've a great pitchman. Really neat to see him molded over the years.

It seems like each of them carry a part of what Steve had as a whole. They'll do well overall but there really was something to seeing Steve pull it all off on his own.

I don't think they need that. I think they are happy with Apple being a team-run company now, and they want to let the world know that. Before, everyone was saying Apple was doomed without Steve; they've done a good job of highlighting that there are capable guys in each department, and they will share the spotlight.

They've got to award recognition to the guys for the stuff they do anyway. Forstall and Cue might not be happy if they spent a lot of hours on a feature or media deal, only to have the design dude revealing it to the world and forgetting to highlight something. Ive would probably feel the same if it was Schiller or Forstall talking about the intricacies of some hardware design.

There's probably a good amount of that going on. It seems like Apple is setting itself up to have a lot of high-profile execs at the top instead of just a single face in the absence of Steve.

I guess I'm trying to force a Steve when there's no Steve to be had. Either way, Schiller kind of blows at presenting despite being the marketing VP. At least in my eyes.

I think Tim the GarageBand lesson guy would do a good job. He seems nice.

Dat Apple TV.

And the box.

Macs don't get their own event any more, and haven't for a long time. The recent exception is the Air Mk II being shown at the Back to the Mac event.

Right, and the new Airs are the only meaningful release the Mac has had since the introduction of the Unibody..... which got it's own event.

You can be sure if they really are releasing redesigned Pros without optical drives and potentially even HiDPI displays that that will get an event. .. probably with Mountain Lion.

If it doesn't get a proper event then it will get something we haven't seen before, like the 1on1 thing for Mountain Lion but maybe in video form for everyone to see or something like that.

Guys this is getting way off topic discussing personalities and stage presence .

Back on topic iPad 3 PPI, Retina or Not?

Actually the topic is titled "apple media event."

But yeah I'm frustrated with the thread right now too.

So are we expecting a major OS update for AppleTV? I think it's necessary if they want the business to grow into something serious. I'd love it even more if it were released tomorrow.

The current setup works okay, but definitely seems like a remnant of the simpleness of the device originally and lacks the thoughtfulness and polish of the rest of iOS.

Things like: having my own movies and photos listed under "computers" and having to drill down three menus to get to them; cramming everything they can't find an easy place for under "Internet"; the total lack of shortcuts when browsing through music in iCloud (at least give me a letter by letter list to the side like the rest of iOS); etc., all need work.

I'd also love the Remote app on the iPhone and iPad to STAY connected always. I hate having to reconnect just because I used my phone for something else for a couple seconds.

Retina. It's too cute a marketing term to drop now. They'll use it for iPad 3 and the new MacBooks with 2x screens.

They won't use the 300 number at all, conveniently just talking about pixels disappearing like magic and other fluff. Nobody except tech nerds remembers numbers anyway, just that retina is sooper hires

So any estimates on how soon these things will be on sale? I guess they'll announce presale starting Friday and theyll start shipping in 2 weeks?

I was joking fwiw, pointing out that there are worse things to go in circled about ;)

Ahhh, Yeah I'm getting kinda stir crazy over this thing. Just want it to be over with so I know what to think.

Maybe my sarcasm is off today but some of you seem very sensitive in here. Relax its not like they are announcing your favorite company closing tomorrow. Enjoy the event, I love new(updated) tech.

Am I nuts or is gizmodo now off the black list and invited to Apple events again?

see:

http://live.gizmodo.com/ipadhd/

and some specific text within this entry:

http://gizmodo.com/5890927/what-to-expect-at-apples-event-tomorrow

I'm pretty sure Gizmodo is just going to regurgitate what everyone else is posting or has paid someone independently to live blog for them that already has an invite.

...either way I'm not putting them in the OP unless people beg me to.

They always liveblogged liveblogs after they were blacklisted. Nothing in your links suggest anything is different.

They had to source The Verge for the invitation announcement:

Maybe it's just a wish list item for me, but here's a minor prediction for tomorrow's event:

iCloud support for Garageband on both iOS and Macs.

I would love to see it happen, even if the rest of the program isn't updated at all. And if the same functionality is soon added to Logic, all the better. Apple has said that iCloud is a major focus for their long-term plans, and I think this would be a good step.

No need. They're pretty much a trash tabloid tech site at this point.

Everybody is selling their stuff without knowing what the new hardware is like?

What is this

If it sucks, you buy the same product (which will get a price drop) or a refurbished version for virtually the same price you sold it for, and you get a new battery and warranty along with it.

I can't even imagine a situation where the newly announced product is not worth upgrading to over the previous one.

Sources: Apple TV update, iPad 3 for Verizon and AT&T LTE launching tomorrow, no quad-core SoC

...

According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple will update both the new Apple TV and the iPad 3 (or iPad HD, a name we first unearthed last year) not with the rumored, quad-core A6 system-on-a-chip, but rather the A5X, a dual-core SoC said to have a more powerful GPU. From what we're hearing, it's basically an A5 on steroids.

Our source was adamant that neither of the new products would be receiving the next generation chip — rather, that Apple seems to be waiting for the launch of the iPhone 5 to introduce the rumored A6.

Our sources say that there's no question the new iPad will tout that 2048 x 1536 Retina Display, but we're also told that along with the A5X, the device will have more RAM than its predecessor, and come in a variety of LTE flavors.
