I think people actually think that doubling the amount of cores actually equates to double the performance, judging by some reactions.

A quad core A9 would have been nice, but perhaps it wouldn't be the best investment of money into designing and manufacturing a new chip with a larger die, when that could be put into the Apple A6, which will have the much faster Cortex-A15.

Now, being disappointed that it's not an A15 is more reasonable, but still very improbable given that it only just recently started sampling (going by the Exynos 5250). The tradeoff with using an A15 in the iPad HD would have been you waiting until Summer to get it, instead of in March. There are no manufacturers that have even started mass producing the A15.

iPad 1 -- useful, but sluggish and janky, very first gen

iPad 2 -- much smoother and more stable, but significant room for improvement with the screen

iPad 3 -- retina, appropriate cpu/gpu/ram bump to support the resolution increase.

iPad 3's likely to be a fantastic, mature product, much like the iPhone 4.

This is exactly how I see it. The iPhone only really hit its strides with the iPhone 4. It was an amazing phone and still is to this day. My iPhone 3G at this same point in it's life was getting unbearably slow.

the dual core vs quad core expectations and performance concerns are premature. I mean, do we have any idea what clock speed the potential A5X will be set at? Any other tweaks to the chip? Who knows how much of a boost it will be over the A5

let’s wait till we see some performance videos (probably tomorrow after the keynote) of webpage loading, app launching, etc... to see how the iPad 3 handles itself with this resolution increase.

I'll take dual or quad, and won't get my panties in a bunch over it. I'm fairly confident the new iPad will look and run great for all the same things I currently use it for and more.

You know, thinking back, I do recall some people expressing concerns about the iPhone 4 being able to cope at the higher resolution before it was released. Completely unfounded, and I think the same will be true here.

There was a credit card offer where you get $300 cash back if you charge $500 in the first 3 months. I actually have set aside the cash as well, but I'm going to put in on the card, pay it off immediately, and get 300 of that back so that should work out well.

1024x768 with 4xmsaa and a 2048x1536 HUD will look fantastic. Hopefully Apple makes it easy for developers to use solutions like that.
Second that, definitely - I just keep pondering the fact that labeling an app "Updated to sharp Retina Graphics!" could be pretty hard to resist for many game developers. Happened with the iPhone 4, at least.

Hard to see through that grammar, but I believe the answer is that Apple owes me value when I give them money.

Unlike some, I don't merely accept Apple's decisions as the natural and best conclusions to all possible routes.

Usually how a financially transaction of this nature works is that you assess the value of the product, then spend your money if you think it's worth the value. Noone is putting a gun to your head to buy anything. If something offers better value in your mind, you're free to choose that instead. In this case, I don't think you can comment on Apple's decisions. since no doubt they've been intensively testing a myriad of chips for the past year or more, and assessing the results based on performance, cost, battery life, die size, heat generation, etc. Unless you've sifted through all their data and decided they made the wrong decision, there's no way that you can say whatever fictional chip you wanted would have been a better fit. What if the cost to battery life was not worth the negligible increase in performance? What if it created too much heat? What if they couldn't be manufactured in the required quantities? Your argument boils down to '4 is better than 2', and in a product like this there's a million factors that determines the ultimate decision.

So you're not in a position to say anything about Apple's decision either way, because you're completely clueless about any of the important data. If you were an Apple engineer, had been working on the iPad 3 for a year and had a different opinion than the rest of the engineering team, I could take that opinion with a degree of weight. But as a random messageboard poster, you have 0 insight into the situation. It's like me saying my car should have included X engines when I know nothing about engines, and nothing about the reasons the manufacturer had to use the engine they did. I'm responding to you and all other posts which include similar statements to the silliness of the last line of your post.

I'm also glad the neoprene sleeve in my Tom Bihn bag will fit this new iPad. Would have been $40 to get a new one. Considering it sounds like my existing smart cover will fit as well, this should be a relatively cheap launch for me.

I'm curious if they will really announce a new smart cover that covers the back. Even though my black leather one will fit, I'll be tempted to grab the latest Apple branded accessory for sure.

iLounge hinted at one. I'd grab an updated Smart Cover in a second. Loved those things.

Anyone care to guess at what new software features there'll be? I still think Siri's pretty likely (and hopefully iOS 5.1 will add some new services to Siri, too). I think the iPhoto speculation is maybe-accurate, but it'd be a purchased app and not something exclusive to the iPad 3.

If Siri happens on the iPad 3, that also means it'll finally get the Clock and Weather and Stock apps, too, and that'll be damn handy.

Although I liked the original Apple case for iPad 1 well enough, I am looking forward to moving to a smart cover too. I have several cases for iPad 2 already (writing gear reviews FTW!) and I'm guessing I'm going to have a variety of iPad 3 cases on my doorstep too.

My credit card will be primed and ready for a new iPad 3 64GB model and Apple TV tomorrow. :)

The question is would they be stupid enough to implement Siri fullscreen, or have a nice multi-tasking type approach?

the way Siri currently works, they don’t want the user thinking about anything else, so it would be full screen or, at least, a modal drop down like notification center.

the speech to text functionality for the keyboard would just pop up a small icon on the bottom as it does on the phone.

iOS will need to change more dramatically for them to consider leaving Siri as a feature that can be running off to the side while you type or view other stuff. that’s just not the way it’s presented now - and it’s too soon for Apple to change it.

I just traded in my ipad 1 to amazon. I'm so ready for this announcement. Does anyone remember if the ipad 2 was available on amazon on release date?

Amazon doesn't sell any iPad, only the 3rd party sellers on Amazon Marketplace. So I guess it just depends on how quickly it can get into the hands of the 3rd party folks and then ship to you. Not sure if that will happen on release day or not.

It seems like Apple doesn't give discounts via the EduStore on iPads, right? Are there any discounts via AppleOnCampus? I'm asking because I can't get my VPN service to work properly.

Am I the only one who have been counting down the hours since there were 24 hours left?

I expect: Retina display, A5X Dual Core Processor, 5-megapixel camera, tapered and a little thicker design. iOS5.1 with new features. Better GPU. LTE 4G for US only. A little heavier. Bigger battery.
Same front facing camera, no Siri, no clock/weather/stocks apps.

nom nom nom

(currently posting from a 27” iMac. I’ve been thinking about this exact comparison since the first rumour of a 2X ipad screen came out over a year ago. )

yeah.. that excites me..

I have a 27" cinema display connected to my pc (or alternately my MacBook pro) I want that super high-res awesomeness.

I think that's a pretty realistic scenario. I could see them potentially going to a 8-megapixel camera and upgraded front camera, though.

I agree, those are 50/50, but I personally tend a little bit toward not expecting too much on these fronts, at least when it comes to the front facing camera. But sure, it's 50/50. :)

Hmmm, thanks for that quick response. I guess I'll be preordering on apple.com if they put it up.

I don't know where people get the idea that a company owes their customers (and vice versa) anything more beyond the initial transaction of 'make a good product offers at a price suitable to the customer' and 'pay money for said product'. Obviously some basic service such as a limited warranty for manufacturer's defects and such.

I you feel the product is worth the asking price, and you pay for it, there shouldn't be a feeling of entitlement for more unless you were uninformed about the product (be it your fault or the comapny's).

I think when Apple evaluates a chip for their tablets they also take into consideration on whether to not they will be able to effectively use it for the the iPhone in the fall without killing the battery life. I think quad core won't work for iPhone 5, you can already see the effect that the dual-core A5 has had on battery life on the iPhone 4S (100 hours less standby).

So my prediction is that A5X for iPad 3, miniaturized under clocked (800mhz) A5X for iPhone 5 and a dual core A6 (using dual-A15 cores instead of quad-A9) for iPad 4. I don't think apple is going to go quad core at all. Ban bet motherfuckers.

and when they have two devices with such significantly different resolutions, they might need to consider using different chips in the two devices. Same architecture worked ok before when it was 960x540 Vs 1024x768, but now the ipad needs more oomph than the iphone - at least in the GPU side of things

would love to follow the conference but it will start at 2am china time ffs.

Yeah same in Australia. It would be great to follow GAF in real time but I think I'll sleep in a bit and hopefully the video will be up by then and I can watch the conference spoiler free

Then read the thread - already have the morning off work organized.

can someone update the OP with what page the event starts on? that way I can jump in and read along to see reactions develop

Anyone here planning a blackout then watching the keynote spoiler free? Anyone?

*crickets*

never. I'd tailgate if I could.

actually, scratch that. That would be lame.

Blablurn! Miss you on here, dude. US beat Italy. Hoped you enjoyed that.

You should just get a couple of hours of sleep in and make it a late-night in China. You're body will probably wake you up at 2 or 3 anyways :)
