Tribes Ascend Beta Thread: Shazbot!

My PC has been able to run pretty much any game on high graphics without any issues.

This game, with anything more than medium graphics, murders my computer. That said, it's a fun game, and I'm getting more and more used to the ski mechanic. I still blow myself up on a half-hourly basis, though.

If the opposing team has a good Sentinel or a good Shrike pilot, I just quit outright. There is absolutely nothing I can do in such a situation. I am entirely dependant on them fucking up to be able to do anything with their flag. It might not be a problem in a competitive match, beause with good team work and tactics you can overcome such obstacles, but there is no such team work on public servers.

I am mostly enjoying the game, as long as I do not run into a good Sentinel/Shrike pilot, but this just kills it.

I know the feeling man, I should have bailed out of a game I played last night. I like to defend and the opposing team had 3 Juggs and 1 Doombringer in out base, did my best to hold them off but it was infuriating.

Started playing this a bit, up to level 5 I think. Mainly playing Soldier and Team Deathmatch. Seems fun, but I'm generally not that great. Usually 5th-6th on my team with a 1:1 KDR and an assist or two thrown in at random.

My handle is MrRawkHawk.

If you buy gold in beta I assume that's going to transfer over to full version? Otherwise why would they sell it, I know.. but just want to ask before I drop any dough.

Last night I liked them on Facebook and purchased Raider, that's a fairly fun class. It might become my new go too class. I'm still being matched with bad players, so I get a kill or two a round from finding someone sniping and just stick all three of my grenades too them and run away. lol

They're broken in comp play right now too. The strats to dealing with dual snipers are still being figured out. Shrikes are basically a super-class, and are stupid good with smaller numbers as you have less options to deal with them. The major thing being talked about right now is for comp flags tripling the cost of shrikes and tanks. I am very much in favor of this.

Try this ini file. Basically the picmip of tribes. With a 5.0Ghz 2500K and a 7970, Arx still brings my FPS down to 95ish. The game just isn't all that well optimized yet. I can stream APB Reloaded and stick at 120fps with medium settings no matter what (same engine).

Wait, I thought this game has a max lock of 60 fps? Is this not true?

I have a decent enough (for tribes) rig (Q9650 and a radeon 5970) and I get slowdowns on a lot of maps for just brief periods of time. Usually it's right when I respawn after dying or something like that. Chugs for a few seconds then right back up to 100+fps. Really annoying.

I notice also that the trees on Arx (the small ones right behind the base near the radar tower) also raise the detail really badly. From far away they look almost like blotchy squares, as you get closer they just warp 2 or three times into decent looking trees. Must be something with the video drivers or something. I hear Tribes does not like ATI.

It is not true. Turn vsync off for 90fps. Use my ini to get 120fps.

I preform substantially better with a 7970 than I do 2x560Ti's, which perform right on par with my 7970 at it's current clocks in 3DMark11. Limited test, but that's all I really have to go on.

Do you have a crossfire profile for the game? You might only be using one of the GPUs on the 5970. Also, UE3 really likes speedy cores over # of cores.

Mindblown! I had everything at max and was still getting only 60, but I'll try to push it later tonight. I'll see what I can get with my 2600k and 6850. Thanks!

Is this game still unbalanced as hell? (please don't say I'm just bad at the game cuz I can guarantee you, I'm not).
Snipers, Strikes, Shrikes OP, but only in 7v7/8v8.

It's not that *you* are bad, it's that the team you're on is bad. One man can never carry a game. This isn't CS or CoD.

One thing that doesn't help is lack of FF. 5 brutes in a gen room (i know it got nerfed) having a disco party with all of them ONLY getting hurt by their own stuff is a bit stupid.

Jugg's a beast now, if that is what you like to play.

Yeah. FF getting turned off for comp is a huge issue right now that is basically handicapping any improvement in the comp scene. Though, if there are 5 brutes in the Gen Room, there are more serious issues than FF going on in that match.

I am loving the Brute with the Heavy Spinfusor and fractal grenades. After trying out most of the classes and mainly playing as a Pathfinder, I think I'll stick with the Brute. I also use the beowulf a lot and do great with it.

Are you seriously posting screencaps to prove yourself or something. I never issued a challenge of your Tribes manliness, good sir. Rather, I think you're being defensive about something nobody will question, which is funny.

People always question. In fact the first response I always get is "maybe you just suck." Pretty fucking annoying to hear when I've played tribes for 6 years.

I want to unlock the infiltrator and the brute, but I have a problem.

Every time I earn xp, I dump it into whatever class sounds fun to play at the moment :3

I wish people would know not to return the flag when it gets knocked into an advantageous position.

Oh that is so annoying! Then again it's quite easy to get caught up in the moment and think "oh shit better return the flag before they grab it!"

I totally understand that. I think, though, that the ultimate goal for any person that really likes the game is to get on a comp team. Even at a casual level, the level of fun is exponentially higher when your team is both organized and doing everything possible at any given moment to hang on to the win.

Hopefully the addition of 'Ranked Matches' mode will satisfy that kind of feeling. It's part of the reason why I've played MOBA games over the past few years so much. Every single game you play is a scrim/match. That single aspect is why a game style that is so horrible to begin with is successful.

Haha Totally ran in Crushed in TDM.

I'm trying to save credits now to unlock doom. I really like the technician but it seems like he is kinda useless outside of a couple of maps.

Haha same. I had like 15K XP, I was like 'i think I should save up for the Raider or Brute since I don't have those yet' I get owned, 'ef this' *pumps XP into armour unlocks for Pathfinder*

Saw this thread pop up yesterday and went and tried it and was isntantly hooked. So damn fun to play.

No clue whether to put xp into unlocking a new class or upgrading one I like, but I like all three of the starting ones.

God this game is so good. Took me a couple games to finally get into it, when you do, it becomes addicting and fun as hell. The game runs well on my machine, amd 965 Phenom II and 460GTX at 60 fps high settings, 1080p. Haven't gotten to arena mode yet but the youtube vids look fun.

As an aside it seems that with MOBAs, CS GO, Tribes ranked?, and maybe more games pushing players into those situations may be very positive. I am usually really anti matchmaking but I do like the idea of pub games being the same rules or at least the same player counts as a way to bridge into organized play. Myself I haven't played even on a hey lets scrim level since 1999 though.

I just joined the fun and it feels like it didn't change at all since the good old Tribes 2 days :)
Its really satisfying, when you grab the enemy flag at hilarious speed and then flee while everything explodes left and right of you.

I don't remember 'shazbot' though. I wasn't kneedeep into the community back then and mainly played a game here and there. Equivalent to Quakes 'Excellent'?

This game is great. Jetpack + skies = gaming bliss.

At first I found the pathfinder too paperthin, so have been playing mostly as soldier - a good balance of speed and durability (heavies are too slow - not interested).

At some point, I managed to grab the flag, and made a run for it. Half the enemy team was chasing me. It was a high-speed chase reminiscent of Mirror's Edge. Explosions all around, while I was skiing down slopes, managing my jetpack energy, boosting, dodging, making quick turns through tough terrain - any collision would kill my momentum and leave me dead. Eventually, it happened, but I managed to keep the flag for half the game. It was such an exhilarating moment - easily the highlight of the game for me. That sense of high-speed chase was awesome!

So I've reevaluated my thoughts on the pathfinder and have been giving it another shot. Rather than focusing on getting kills or whatnot, now I just give chase to the flagbearer. Either I am the pursuer, or the hunted. Either way, it's such an awesome sense of speed and excitement.

This game is awesome!

(is it sad that the first thing it reminded me of when I started playing was Tiny Wings?)

I've really been enjoying this game, I think it's the first FPS I've played seriously since Quake 2. Also probably had my best game yet earlier as a Brute:

Anyone wanna meet on Mumble and have a match sometime? Could be awesome (and frantic) coordinating while playing.
It makes the game exponentially more fun.

For right now though, you have to get whitelisted in order to join the scrim servers. You also have to be on a team in order to get whitelisted. Supposedly, private servers will be out before launch, which is in a month. zfz will have a few private servers, which I'd be more than happy to share with GAF.

This has to be the best CTF game I've played it years, the mechanics just flow so smoothly. Skiing through the map, dodging missiles before jumping from an incline, grabbing the flag and disappearing as fast as you arrived, it's just artwork.
