Epic VP Mark Rein will be shocked if the Wii U isn't a hit for Nintendo when it launches later this year.

Sepaking to Eurogamer at GDC in San Francisco last week, Rein argued that parents are ready to upgrade their kid's Wii to Nintendo's new system.

"I like the Wii U. I think E3 will be a big eye-opener for people," he predicted.

"I played Batman: Arkham City on the Wii U and they are doing some really cool stuff with the controller.

"Do you remember the Zelda demo they had on it? Would you not buy a Wii U just to play that? Of course you would. That's what Nintendo is all about. Their hardware is the software delivery service for their great content. That Zelda demo was gorgeous and we can do even more than that with Unreal Engine 3. I think it will do great."

Rein added that Nintendo's brand recognition and beloved IP should see it fly off shelves, though he suggested that it might have been quicker off the mark with getting the machine to stores.

"It's a great brand that a lot of parents really trust and they're probably ready to buy their kids an HD Wii that does that much more than just being an HD Wii.

"I'd love it if they'd done it last year, but I'm excited for them to do it this year. I'd be shocked if it doesn't do well.

"Did you play that Battle Mii game? Two players would play with a Wii Remote and Nunchuk and one would play with the Wii U controller?

"I would buy a Wii U to play that game in a heartbeat. And I hope people make those kind of games with our technology. I think we've yet to really see what the Wii U can do and I think at E3 this year they're going to shock us."

Earlier this year Nintendo president Satoru Iwata suggested that, more than ever, the company will be looking to partner with third parties when developing high-spec core games that fall outside of its traditional comfort zone.

Might Epic step up to the plate with a new IP for the system, a la Gears of War on the Xbox 360?

"If I had 10 development teams I'd make a game for every single platform and make that the special game for that platform," replied Rein.

"If you're the special game on that platform you do really, really well. Gears was one of the special ones on Xbox 360. Infinity Blade is a special game on the iPhone and iPad. Shadow Complex was a special game on Xbox Live Arcade.

"But we don't have 10 development teams so it's just a matter of picking and choosing what we do and doing the best thing we can for the idea that we have."

Epic currently has two titles in development: Infinity Blade: Dungeons for iOS and Fortnite for as-yet unconfirmed platforms.

So, some people did played some Wii U games at GDC (Arkham City Wii U). Kinda bold of him to say the Unreal Engine 3 could do better than the Zelda Tech Demo. Still no word of UE4.

Nowhere in this article is UE4 deconfirmed. They're obviously still not allowed to talk about it. We'll just have to wait and see.

Man, I really wish the Wii U's GPU is based on a full RV770 / Radeon HD 4850/4870.

I would be sweet if Wii U's GPU had 1TFLOP (4850) performance aka about 4x X360's Xenos ^__^

and here we go... it took the first reply...

UE4 is not confirmed for any hw, let alone PS4...

no reason to make a fuss out of this interview...

It's not deconfirmed, but since UE4 has been talked about (somewhat), and here he is talking about UE3 on the Wii U.... I wouldn't get your hopes up for UE4 on the machine.

At this point in time surely Rein would be trying to sell Wii U UE3 given UE4 isn't ready and Wii U games will have been in dev for the past 12 months or so?

No news either way here.

"Wii U is going to be great"

"Batman is looking fantastic. Did I mention it uses UE3?"

"that zelda, so amazing. Of course you buy a Nintendo for Nintendo games"

"UE3 looks even better. Did I mention we make UE3?"

I'm getting tired of buying Nintendo hardware to play Nintendo games and very little else. I don't plan on being a day one adopter like I was for the GameCube and Wii. I pledge to finally be patient enough to wait and get one when there's a couple of their games to play.

I'll probably break that pledge...

Sounds like he simply said you could do something more impressive on the Unreal 3 engine than the Zelda demo.

You guys read to much into things. :I

Yeesh, Mark Rein is really cranking out the sound bytes the last week or so.
GDC is usually quite a vocal platform for Epic.

Might Epic step up to the plate with a new IP for the system, a la Gears of War on the Xbox 360?

"If I had 10 development teams I'd make a game for every single platform and make that the special game for that platform," replied Rein.

So... I take it they're not making a Wii U title?

I'd wager some of first few posts in this thread are ban worthy, some outrageous jumping to conclusion statements.

It's funny, over in the wiiU train hype thread this feels like old news.

I loved Arkham City. Anyone who hasn't played it yet will do them a great service to play the GOTY edition on Wii U. Hopefully it includes all the DLC.

Infinity Blade on the Wii-U maybe?

In all honesty, I am sitting perfectly on the fence for the Wii-U. Until I see some games and see what it can do, I cannot make a choice. I must admit I am not a massive Nintendo fan but they make fun games to play with friends. I am now interested to see if they keep that up for the Wii-U.

Wii-U is too simmilar to x360, kinda figures that they wont use UE4 on it. Im thinking that UE4 has some requirements that old hardware cant deliver [8+ cpu threads, dx11 compliant gpu].

Why would they not be allowed to talk about it? It's not like it's a secret.

UE4 is not confirmed for any hardware because no new Sony or Microsoft hardware has been confirmed and the specs might still be up in the air. Wii U is another matter entirely. Of course, this doesn't confirm anything, but it is interesting.

So Batman looks identical to a 6 year old system and he is impressed? If he said that it was better looking. Or running at 60 fps than he would have my attention.

God damn, the post chain in here is crazy. :lol

Rein is in full on marketing/pimp mode with regards to the Unreal Engines and their potential. It's cool to see him so enthusiastic about a Nintendo system. :D

Why would they not be allowed to talk about it? It's not like it's a secret.

Technically it is, they've been put under NDA by "someone" regarding the UE4 demonstration.

It's not deconfirmed, but since UE4 has been talked about (somewhat), and here he is talking about UE3 on the Wii U.... I wouldn't get your hopes up for UE4 on the machine.

He wouldn't be able to say anything even if it was up and running right now on it so that's a pointless assumption to make.

think this is most positive thing I've heard out of EPIC on a Nintendo Platform in a long time....personally think this is very encouraging.

I'd wager some of first few posts in this thread are ban worthy, some outrageous jumping to conclusion statements.
Just scroll past them.

I think the coolest bit of news here is someone has seen Arkham City running on WiiU and feels that the controller is doing some innovative things within the context of that game.

All you Nintendo-only folks need to play Arkham City when you get your WiiU, btw. AMAZING game.

Well, UE3 will be able to perform better on Wii U than 360/PS3, and the Zelda demo looked like a high-end PS3 game, kinda, so... yeah?

I can see why some of these ports were announced when people thought early/mid 2012 was a possibility, but who is seriously going to buy Batman with a November 2012 launch? Are there really that many Nintendo only gamers who don't own PS3/360/PC?

The only thing shocking about this is that it's Mark saying something positive about a Nintendo system, rather than Cliff.

If Mark said "UE3 is going to look great on nextbox/PS4" I would be worried.

He basically did say that, actually.
Not in those exact words.
It was more like "UE3 will still be widely used by people that want good looking games are strong hardware"

Just scroll past them.

My guesses are map overlay, holding up the controller for detective stuff and maybe inventory/information on the controller.

I think most people knew the Wii-U would launch with a good chunk of older ports, as well as whatever Nintendo make for launch. I am sure many will want to play those games if they have only ever had a Wii.

no new information basically.... great

Well, now we know that Arkham City Wii U is great.

And that the Wii U is capable of more than what we saw in the Zelda Tech Demo, considering he said the UE3 can do better than that.
