Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

I would like to know how legit is the box site since we have been linking them for a while now

70 titles sounds pretty good, I would love to see a launch window list

also I don't see why Pikmin 3 at launch would be questioned

Something has gone seriously wrong with Pik 3 if it still isn't ready by launch. That would be a serious WTF moment.

How many teatables have to be upended?!

Anything could get pushed back, I guess. I do think though that it will for sure be at launch.

it was a Wii game moved to WiiU nearly a year ago I am sure it should have little reason to slip to 2013 unless Nintendo wants it that way

I am not a major Pikmin fan I may even skip it if something else is available

I'm the same, not a huge Pikmin guy but do think it will be at launch, as you said though Nintendo can do what it want's and maybe they have something else planned at launch that they think will cannibalize Pikmin sales so they end up pushing it back to March 2013 or something. Nintendo has said with new system launches it's important to have a constant stream of games to keep momentum, maybe holding Pikmin back ends up being a part of that plan.

We realized that Ubisoft wants to give strong support for the new Nintendo console. What do you think of the concept of U Wii?

I am excited about the Wii U. It has great new features with the touchpad and NFC capabilities that can be very interesting for the gameplay - for example, the combination of using the pad and controls simultaneously. I think E3 will be a great opportunity to see how it all comes together.

I assume with "using the pad and controls simultaneously", he means using the Wii U remote and the Wii remote together.

Don't read too much into it yet.

The true moment of truth for Ancel will be when he reveals where BG&E2 is going.

Another interesting interview of Mario 3D Land director Hayashida, from Gametrailers

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Could Have Featured Donkey Kong and Pikmin Cameos, But Miyamoto Said "No"

"One of the early proposals that we discussed for Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the possibility of including characters from other [Nintendo] franchises," Hayashida explained through his translator. "For example, you might have Donkey Kong or Pikmin show up."

"We presented this to Mr. Miyamoto, but he came down pretty hard, saying that there has to be a functional reason to include characters of a certain type in a game. He went to specify precisely why the Pikmin wouldn't work."

His response was similar to one that Zelda director Eiji Aonuma gave me when I asked why Mario cameos sometimes appear in Zelda games, but very few Zelda cameos appear in Mario games. It was all about body type.

"In the Pikmin games, you'll notice that all the Pikmin are very thin — tall and narrow for their frame," Hayashida explained. "Mario enemies tend to be on the short and squat side and there's a functional reason for that. They're easier to stomp on. They're lower so you can get above them and broader so you can land on them. In that sense, Pikmin are just not well suited for the Mario universe."

Miyamoto's dismissal forced the Mario Galaxy 2 team to "focus on the functional again."

Maybe Donkey Kong will make a come back as a "villain" for a future Mario Wii U ? Apparently not

With Donkey Kong on the brain (and knowing that Hayashida's first experience with Mario was with the original arcade version of Donkey Kong) I later asked Hayashida if his former rival would ever become the main villain of a Mario game again. While Mario and Donkey Kong have scrapped in Mario Kart, Mario Tennis and Mario vs. Donkey Kong games, Bowser seems to be Mario's biggest problem in core Mario games.

"If we encountered a situation with a proper gameplay context, we would consider it," Hayashida said. "Let's say if we were building a level and functionally it called for someone to throw barrels at you, then Donkey Kong would be appropriate."

"But now that I think about it, maybe we have a situation where, at the end of Super Mario 3D Land, Bowser throws fireballs at you from the end of the stage. And we didn't use Donkey Kong there… so…"

So, it sounds like Mario and Donkey Kong will have have to settle whatever differences they may have on the race track, tennis court, golf course, baseball diamond, et cetera, et cetera.

The true moment of truth for Ancel will be when he reveals where BG&E2 is going.
(if it ever gets made)

The BG&E talk last year was when he said if it got made it wouldn't be on the Wii U because it would be a true next-gen game and the Wii U wasn't a true next-gen system, or something like that.

In that case, I wonder if he's seen some beefed-up specs that might change his mind..

For the Ancel interview, clearly, its focus was in the gameplay applications thanks to Wii U features (padlet, NFC, etc.). It wasn't an enthusiasm about the system power, for people who would have wished a confirmation that the Wii U is a beast that impress third-parties beyond the stars.

It's basically a "forced statement" by a known creator, about the new cool toy for gamedesigner that you must talk about to appear in-the-trend & creative to the medias. We saw a lot of these phrases for previous innovative platforms without any kind of spectacular support following.

Donkey Kong proved with DKCR that he is big enough for his own franchise.

He definetly is, doesn't mean he can't do other things. I imagine though the reason DK left Mario is because Miyamoto just doesn't like playable characters from one game to be NPC's in another game.

He was only stating that WiiU is not next gen in his eyes.

those are strong words maybe he still feels that way I am at the hospital so I did not have a chance to read the french since I cannot concentrate on my multi-language brain on drugs

I skimmed it does not see a retraction just that he is excited about what you can do with that controller

An interview of Inafune on the "sad state of Japanese gaming", with a part concerning the Wii U

GS: What are your thoughts on the Wii U so far?

KI: I can't comment too much about it because I haven't touched it yet, but whenever Nintendo comes out with something new, it's always good. So I'm confident it must be impressive. If I get a chance, I always want to try out creating for a new platform. So I'm looking forward to that chance. The same thing could go for the Wii U because it's part of the challenge in evolution, and it's a challenge in motion control. It's in that testing stage, so I'm really interested.

What you see with Apple, they've been attacking different challenges, but they change the world with every product they come out with. They instantly come up with a solution, and we have to remember that is rare. In the ordinary world, there's always a trial-and-error process. That's why Steve Jobs is considered a genius. But in an ordinary world, we try, we challenge, we evolve, and it takes time. What we're doing in the gaming industry is understandable.

Quick ! A Mega Man or a fresh new franchise on the Wii U !

It would be awesome to see DK as a villain in a Mario game again, but by that it sure doesn't sound like it.

I'd love to see it as well. I mean, it would give bowser a break and people could stop with the "the same thing happens every time" thing, and who wouldn't want to climb up this iconic red support beams in 3D?

Inafune is becoming quite the attention craver.

Anyway, with that Mario idea floating around, they could do a Super Mario "universe." Have Mario visit the universe of other Nintendo franchises, and be what the Super Smash Bros Brawl adventure mode should have been.

I love the fact the "No" is quoted, as if that's all he said...

"Miyamoto-san, how about including Pikmin and Donkey Kong in the new Galaxy game! I think it'd be a great cameo that could add some really interesting opportunities and scenarios...!"

"No."

I hardly have any time to game these days, so I've actually been considering not getting anything at launch this gen (first time in a long time), but if they can come in at $250 again it will hard not to cave and jump in right off the bat.

Come on, Nintendo, tempt me.

Im in the same boat. Im only interested in the WiiU for two reasons
1. Playing Nintendo's best games for the first time in glorious full color HD.
2. The convenience of next-gen gaming in the palm of my hand while my GF watches TV.

The prospect of buying any other console next gen is not interesting. Sorry MS and Sony.
Unless they got something game-changing coming out.

So at $250, getting a WiiU is a no brainer, above $349... Ill go back to reading books.

From videogamer.com

Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman and Beyond Good and Evil, has said that he does not think Nintendo's new console should be deemed 'next-gen'.

Asked if the Wii U is a next-generation machine, Ancel replied: "Not really.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at E3, Ancel explained how he thinks others will be quick to imitate Nintendo.

"I think people are going to copy it, because you've got this mix between tablet, touch screen and big screen – big screen and little screen - there are a lot of possibilities."

Pressed on this issue - whether he expected Microsoft or Sony to cook up something similar - Ancel replied: "I don't know if Sony will do it, or Microsoft – but yes, I think it's a possibility. But I think the main thing is to have this – offering new ways to play is very interesting."

This is basically what I want from a Nintendo RPG. It would be great to go to a stage or world from each of the major series, recruit the hero as a playable character, battle the main bosses, etc. Basically a Captain N RPG is what I'm looking for.

That would blow my mind, doubt it ever happens though.

Right, I doubt we will ever see Mario having a boss battle with Link in an RPG, neat thing to dream about though.
It would be cool if it's done right, otherwise we'll get another subspace emissary which in its defense was good [particularly ROB] since its hard to group all the characters in one whole story.

Yeah. "Fun at any cost" is not my philosophy, either. I'm possibly in for the launch window at $250 (though it'd better come with something in the box so I don't have to immediately go back to the store to drop another $50 on a game!), and maybe I'll stretch to $300 if there's something unbelievably fuckawesome involved (would have to be new TimeSplitters or a ridiculously compelling, previously unannounced feature, like electrostatic haptics on the screen).

It would be cool if it's done right, otherwise we'll get another subspace emissary which in its defense was good [particularly ROB] since its hard to group all the characters in one whole story.

Exactly, it could be my game of forever or it could be an uncohesive mess, which is why they won't try it, don't risk damaging the images of some of the most famous characters in history for one game.

Now for some feels bad man-type speculation.

Zynga.
They are highly likely to make games for the Wii U.
This will open the floodgates for MAXIMUM CRAP that does really well.

How do we stop this? Do we want to stop this?

I would love to stop it, don't think I can. Honestly if the games don't sell then they won't make them for the platform, and I tend to think the people that play games by Zynga and other companies like that don't want to play those games on consoles, or pay console prices.

Maybe Ancel changed his mind, because Nintendo bribed Ubisoft to support B&GE2 and publish it as an exclusive game for Wii U.

Honestly I wouldn't consider Between good and evil 2 as a big exclusive game, at least not big enough to be worth for Nintendo to "money-hat" it.

Time splitters' exclusive may be possibly a better deal in my opinion.

Jaffe doesn't give a fuck about next generation consoles,...

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/339813/david-jaffe-couldnt-care-less-about-next-gen-uses-the-word-f/

Outspoken God of War creator, David Jaffe has said he "couldn't care less" about the prospect of next-generation game consoles.

Speaking to our colleagues at Edge, the potty-mouthed designer said he's not excited at the prospect of new hardware because of increased development budgets and, simply put, he's seen it all before.
"I couldn't care less about next-gen," he told Edge ahead of the European release of Twisted Metal this Friday. "I started at Sony Imagesoft doing Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis games, and I went through that to PS1, then PS2, PS3, Vita... You go through the cycle enough and you realise today's 'Oh my fucking God' is tomorrow's 'Ehh, whatever'.

"Ultimately, this is all going to be yesterday's news and it's about the experience, the game. Unless we're talking about holodecks, or AI that's so amazing it can actually write a compelling story around you procedurally based on your choices, I'm not interested."

Jaffe is preparing to leave Eat Sleep Play, the studio he co-founded in 2007, at the end of this month. The designer's set to start his own studio and looks set to walk away from the type of big-budget console games he's traditionally been associated with.

Jaffe's new company will instead have a broad remit spanning mobile and browser games, because he claims new console hardware will make it much harder for the more ambitious projects to get made.

"I'm no longer that excited about next-gen technology; it means budgets go up," he explained. "It sucks. The biggest thing I want is what you get from the PSP and the 3DS - it's always on, there's a sleep mode and I can just hit a button and I'm right back where I was and I don't have to go through all the boot-up shit."

..., but he likes the 3DS!

So he basically says: Regardless of the gfx bumps, gaming experiences won't profit a lot from the new systems.
