I despised Austen's run on the X-Men, especially that annoying-as-hell Havok's nurse character.

As much as I hated his X-Men, I gnash my teeth when I recall his Superman. I forget if it was Superman or Action Comics, but it was SO amateur. How the fuck that guy got so much high-profile work is a mystery for the ages.

I was working in the comic book store by then, and I remember the backlash against Austen being even more immediate and furious than it usually is when X-Men fans don't like a story. It was vicious -- Austen has spoken in interviews about getting death threats and having people constantly tell him how bad those stories sucked, both online and to his face at conventions -- but it seemed like such a sudden, complete turn that there's a level that I can't help but be fascinated by. It's this one time in comics where everybody picked up a story, read it, and then we all agreed without even speaking that nope, that never happened. Austen's run was essentially retconned by the fans.

The backlash was so severe that it followed him to DC and his brief tenure writing Action Comics. According to an interview Austen did with CBR, it got to the point where his editors at DC came to the conclusion that people just flat-out hated anything with the words "Chuck Austen" on it:

"They were having problems with my scripts and general direction, and sales weren't where they wanted them. They wanted a top ten book, and felt another writer could get them there, when I couldn't. What I was told was that Dan Didio had a conversation with various retailers who said they would never order anything with my name on it because they hated me so much, and that it was creating a ceiling of sales on "Action" that I would never be able to break through. So, I was off Superman. I refused to work under a pseudonym, so DC fired me and blacklisted me from the company."

Chuck Austen's run on X-Men was definitely a special kind of awful. legendary really, that article is right about the 100% unanimous hate it got, fuck I remember the comic threads on old GAF when it was coming out, pure seething hatred IIRC.

Made all the more amazing considering it ran alongside Grant Morrison's New X-Men.
 
I don't really have the money to pick up single issues, but I made an exception for Saga. Brian K. Vaughan's books are what got me into comics, so it's great to have a new series by him. I want to wait for the trades, but I'll probably end up breaking down and buying the single issues.

Popped in here to type this, very much this. For what it's worth, I've wholly embraced digital, but I just had to have this in paper form for some reason. Think I'll buy a second copy to pass around among my non-comic reading friends.

Great to have BKV back, and Staples is a fittingly great talent to have at his side.
 
Question: What's the nearest comic/book shop that sells comics in Redding, UK?
mY brother is studying there and I'd like to ask him to get me some series.

I bought this and read the first few pages which were brilliant and echoed a conversation I'd recently had with my wife.

With digital, I'm buying first issues as a trade sampler. If I like, I will add to my trade list and pick them up later. Especially a BKV book, I know this will read better in a collected format.

In other comics news, I read Fantastic Four 604 on the bus this morning and it was brilliant. I really really love grown up Franklin and Val, and her line to her brother at the start "You're my favourite superhero" had me misty eyed from the start. AFAIK this was the climax of the run - I think everything after this will be aftermath, dealing with the repercussions of the story. Which is nice, I always like stories about the fallout of big events. Maybe we'll find out what happened with Doom.

Also read WatXM and it was great too. This might actually be my favourite comic, period. It's just so fun, and the art is stunning. Love the little Bamfs, they're so cute. And Kid Gladiator's little rant about staying AWESOME had me cracking up. Dear Marvel, please get the hint - FUN COMICS for grownups >>>>> 'mature' superhero wank.

Lots more left on my stack of ones and zeroes, this is a great week for the funnybooks.
 
What's the profit margin for comic shops on new comics? I can't imagine it is much at all, yet the two comic shops near my work both give decent discounts (one has 10% if you pay cash; the other, 25% off new issues). It's nice because it's always less than what I've added up in my head from the cover prices. Yet I need at least one of them to stay in business (and I have a strong preference so I always go there even though the discount is less).

Back when I managed a store the average discount on comics we ordered was 45% off.

Diamond had different discount tiers per item category (comics, rpg books, toys, merchnadise, and videos). Th e best discount was alwyas comics.

I don't recall what the upper limit was for comic discounts to retailers, but shops offer a percentage off new books / pull / preorder customers to act as a loss leader.

Fantastic Four 604 was great, but I was confused on one point:

Did Franklin revive the dead Galactus from Millar's run, or the regular Galactus that was beat down last issue?
 
copped and read Saga. really beautiful stuff. i think i'll cop the first arc in single issues and then start collecting the trades. also read Wolverine and the X-men #1. seems like it's gonna be really fun so i bought issues 2-4. haven't had time to read em yet, though.

also got thief of thieves #1 but i wasn't as sold on it. maybe i'll read the first tpb when it drops.

I think that's a good look for Omega Red. He still looks like himself, but without that terrible Jim Lee 90s costume design(big ass shoulder/knee pads, awkward looking ponytail thing)

Remender has X-Force going up against a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Most of their indenities are underwraps, but he did reveal Clan Omega here(Omega Red, Omega White, and Omega Black). They are the product of a clandestine weapons manufacturing group called the White Sky. Remender describes better then I could,

"The White Sky operate out of a giant cumulous cloud that floats around the world and can't be tracked. Inside of it is this giant, beautiful show room where you can get an assassin made to order," Remender said. "Their clients are mostly corporate, but anybody who has the money can get in touch with them and special order custom made and specific assassins. It's kind of a giant Toys 'R Us/Mercedes Benz dealership where you can get all types of assassins made to order: robots, ninjas, sexy secretaries, you name it."

The first issue involves Deadpool going to this store and having a bit of a shopping spree/recon mission for the team.

All Opena's been doing since UXF #18 back in December has been cover arts and posters. I KNOW he's gotta be working on some UXF issues, and they haven't announced who's drawing the other 6 issues in this big "Final Execution" story arc involving Clan Omega/The Brotherhood, so...hope springs eternal. I think they'll gonna announce some of it this weekend at Wondercon, actually.

I miss the Opena/White art team dearly.

Looks like Man of Action have done a really nice job. Spidey seems maybe a little too "Aw shucks" but I'm sure he'll be a bit more balanced outside of a trailer.

Were one to get into Journey of Mystery, where would one get into it?
 
As much as I love Wolverine and the X-men, this is the best comic of the week, for me. Probably the best of the whole month.

I just finished reading my weekly haul and I have to say that my book of the week was The Shade. James Robinson is really amazing when he's writing something he cares about. If he and Tony Harris did a book together again, I'd be in heaven. I looked at Saga but put it back and decided to trade wait on it.

If only that lovely art weren't wasted on a bag of feces and vomit for a character roster. Fantomex may be cool, but I can get past the rest of that awful team. Just make it Archangel and Fantomex and I'll read it. Once. From the library.

The only way X-Force could get shittier is if they put Gambit in there.
