I was thinking that Shepard was the Catalyst, that he was the thing considering his inability to become indoctrinated and the prothean beacons, that he was somehow special. Even if they didn't go that route, ending with him going up on the platform and the machine starting to work would have been all the ending I needed.
 
Although I acknowledge all the plot holes and nonsense, I really enjoyed the end. I really dig the indoctrination theories people have been coming up with, and the fact that I was actually fooled by this (I chose "Paragon") is fucking cool, no doubt about it. I think there's probably gonna be DLC to clear things up which is just EA tastic, but even if there's not it's no great loss. There's so much fiction that ends in this kind of style of not knowing all the answers and having to fill in the voids yourself, Bioware aren't the first.

I personally like to think that you going into the beam didn't actually happen, but you "die" and your subconscious that has been indoctrinated is fighting it, maybe even Harbringer is making it all up for you, who knows. But to explain the Normandy flying off with the crew that were in London making no sense, could just be a manifestation in Shepard's mind of her strong desire to see her friends survive in an idealistic way.

Then after choosing to destroy the Reapers in your mind, that's when you wake up, and we might get the 'real' ending through DLC. That's the EA bullshit I hate, but it's probably gonna happen, and we all knew that as soon as EA took over the series there was going to be a lot of milk.
 
The whole Marauder Shields thing is actually kinda dumb because it's like people were expecting some HUGE EPIC BATTLE. We got that in ME2 against a stupid Reaper baby and it wasn't much to write home about.

The fact that it ended with dialogue and with a final "choice" (lol) is conceptually fine, and actually harkens back to classic cRPGs. The execution is, of course, another matter entirely.

I HATE the indoc theory. It's a theory for those blinded by hope in their despair. It's a theory for those who would still be willing to give Bioware money. It's a shit theory and it's not true because of LOTS OF SPECULATION FROM EVERYONE

If I were doing that, I would just have Shepard order all the Reapers to fly right into the sun.

I would actually feel way better about that ending that way!

In addition to that, the indoc theory doesn't solve anything. Nothing is accomplished. The Reapers would still be out there destroying organics to protect organics from synthetics that would destroy organics. It's literally a theory concocted by people who are in deep denial regarding the endings.


On a slightly lighter note, this has been some great group therapy. Group hug everyone!

I understand there isn't much reason to go through a second replay as it all ends the same way. But do you want to trade in for that reason, or simply due to anger?

Possibly, but at the same time they've thought of little things to cover their tracks, like when you're going around inside the Geth server and you view the Quarians in their suits, even though they wouldn't have had them on, they still thought of a solid way around this by saying it's the way you would perceive them as that's the only way you know they look, just like the rest of the server. That deserves some kind of credit, and that's just a small part of the game.

Maybe I am giving them too much credit, but then there's still a chance that I'm not, and I'm happier this way than just having the ending handed to me on a platter all brought together neatly, and there not being this kind of discussion on it. They may have darn goofed, but then they could have some master, sinister EA buy all our DLC plan to get this ending, who knows.

The whole thing reminds me so much of the ending of the Matrix trilogy in a lot of ways. A lot of people hate on that too, but it brought out some great discussion and theories, some people were actually satisfied by the ending and by having unanswered questions.

Yes, it doesn't solve anything. That's the idea behind the sinister bullshit EA DLC mode, the fact that Shepard wakes up. It might not be coming, but remember this is EA, it's most likely coming, especially if it will sell.

Amazing. The whole final act was such an amazingly hilarious misstep. Wowzers. Hahahah.

No, that's just an example of Bioware being lazy. The fact that Tali's picture is a photoshopped stock photo proves that.

This is the ending we are actually getting. They intended it to be this vague to garner LOTS OF SPECULATION FROM EVERYONE. Some media can accomplish this, but Bioware is not capable of such a thing. They have constantly retconned the series and that makes it difficult to surmise what would happen after the credits roll.

The one thing I DID like about the ending was the musical crescendo as the camera zoomed out on the Normandy on the jungle planet.

I still can't work my head around the synthesis ending. Does everything become ganthetic including clothing? Do rocks suddenly gain sentience due to the presence of ganthetic particles? What about the geth? How the fuck do programs become organic?
 
Well, I think the Catalyst misspoke. You lose your corporeal form and you...become a reaper, so I guess that's like dying.

I'm still aware of the laziness (especially the stock photo, which is roflcopter) but I still think it's a good way of getting round the laziness. I wouldn't really call it proper laziness, more trying to be a little more time effective because modelling out of suit quarians just for that isn't really worth the time and effort. What is lazy is the PC port with their 'high res textures' that never came, and lack of controller support among many other things.

I see your points though, and I know partly what happens is bullshit, but only EA and Bioware know what the next steps are, whether this is the actual ending or not. To be honest, looking back at so many other video games and their stories and endings, I still hold Mass Effect in high regard. The ride was amazing, and the amount of detail put into the universe is still very impressive regardless of whether they've forgotten or ignored certain details, especially at the end of the game. But there's so much more stuff out there that has done the same thing, and rightly gets criticism for it, and I wouldn't deny that same criticism for the Mass Effect series, but goddamn the whole thing is just cool and awesome and that's what I've taken away from it.
