Apple sells 3 million new iPads in 3 days

My first iPad as well and while this wont replace my gaming rig or consoles, I've certainly used my laptop a whole lot less. I can definitely see this taking away my budget for mobile gaming however...

iOS is obviously a very popular gaming platform. Getting bent out of shape because an iPad sales thread shows up on the gaming forum seems ridiculous. If the mods think is inappropriate it'll be moved but, why anyone else would give a damn either way is beyond me.

How come my consoles can only run Call of Duty in 600p but on my new iPad, Modern Combat 3 runs at 2048x1536 resolution?

How long will it take these guys to catch up to Apple?

Why do I want to cut down on my need for a computer? I can get a computer that's more powerful than the iPad, that I can type on, and that I don't have to hold up, for less money than the iPad.

I can get a console and a handheld that are more powerful than an iPad, that play much better games than an iPad and feel much more comfortable to use than an iPad for less than the price of a new iPad.

Your point?

Anecdotal. Plus, take a look at the top 25 apps on any iOS device. 9/10, they're games.

During the 25 billion apps downloaded "event", Apple released the name of top 25 apps on iPad and iPhone. For both hardware, games hold the most spots in these 25 slots.

Frame rate, AI, no. of objects on screen, geometry.

lol haha what? Spend $150 on a graphics card and it will blow away what your console can do.

I just spent $200 on a new graphics card, and no, it can't. I can't completely max Skyrim out because other variables, such as my memory and CPU, are holding it back. I'm all for PC gaming and building my own rigs, but that's just a poor statement and relies on many other variables to prove true.

Great news for Apple I guess.

Still, it's a tablet and I just can't justify owning one when I already have a good laptop and a smartphone.

It honestly doesnt matter either way. A thread on the gaming side of neogaf will not make the ipad any more of a gaming device than it already is.

The individual said nothing else on the market can rival it. Did he say nothing else for $200 can rival it? No.

Oh right, another thing, you know which company doesn't really want a post-PC world, Apple, lest we forget that laptops and desktops are part of their core business. Lord knows I certainly see enough Macbook product placement in television shows and films.

I heard MS and Sony just announced the name of their next generation of consoles :

The PadStation 4 and the PadBox720. These will play only with 3D glasses and with touch HDTVs. Touch is the future.

Should we really care though? Even if post-pc world happens all it means that other devices will become more popular than PC, not that PC will become less popular. I'm a PC gamer and Apple can go and sell 500 mln iPads a year, yay for them, but it won't have much effect on my own gaming.

It's the fastest-growing gaming machine, so I think this thread fits here.

And the PC is by far the biggest gaming platform on the planet, selling 1 million units a day worldwide, every day and not just at launch!

Only PCs also get used for a lot of other things and some may never even see a game in their life. A bit like the iPad.

Yet gaming software sells a lot better on the iPad than on the PC (with the exception of stuff like WoW).

There is something about Apple that ignites a passion in people, Google Andriod has actually had a faster growth rate then iOS for example and nobody goes nutters over that platform.

Really though? Are we talking iOS games or iPad-specific games? How are we working out the split? And are we including all services like Steam etc? Are we talking units or revenue?

It makes sense. Install base size dictates sales potential of software on the platform. Imagine if mainstream game companies start developing exclusively for iPad leaving consoles dry. Of course, I am exaggerating here (for now at least).

I think a way to insulate is to have strong first party developers.
No. It's always been more complicated than that - otherwise everyone would develop exclusively for PC. There's demographics to take in to consideration, and where people choose to spend their "serious" gaming time, the competition on the platform (eg 69p games), piracy, etc. Hence why the PSP always did well in "install-base" but never had any games charting, and no developers wanted to make anything for it.

If anything iOS vs games consoles is like television vs movies/cinema. There's enough room for both markets even if they occasionally overlap.

Install base does among other things (take the Wii for example).

And it's not like iDevices performing incredibly well is a new thing. It's been that way for a while now and just because the devices are getting more and more powerful doesn't mean developers are just going to suddenly abandon dedicated devices for it. It's just another avenue that allows people to play games. It's kind of funny and kind of sad seeing all these people here acting scared and offended that it's performing well. You guys need to chill out.

I imagine Apple would be perfectly fine with the diminishment of its laptop/desktop business, in favor of its tablet business.

I heard the 3DS can run Pong at 2048x1537 pixels, that's some serious power son.

Units sold.

even taking aside the how dumb it is to compare 99cent games to full blown ones in units that still isn't really true, especially since:

- iPad sales are minority at appstore compared to iPhone
- games with prices are already in minority at appstore, getting squeezed out by freemium titles.

I do think iPad is killing Vita's potential. Look at the sales of both platforms since launch, why isn't Vita pulling such numbers? Probably because people buy other mobile devices, such as tablets. Sure iPads don't offer the same quality gaming experience than Vita, but they offer so much more than gaming. And this Retina screen: technophiles will all fall for it, it's that irresistible.

Kinda like the Kindle, 3DS is saved by its price point (and its mascots). More than ever, now new iPad launched, Vita also needs its price cut.

Touch is the present, a stepping stone at best, and the faster it goes away the better off we are. (I know you were sort of kidding)

That being said, can't wait for my new iPad.

I know, cars will be touch too in the near future. However, I think that the main usage of the Ipad, like for any tablet, is to surf the web. Now, if only they would make a 12" version I would buy it for sure. I find a 10" screen a little bit too small for optimal web browsing.

Interesting to see people threatened by this thread's presence in Gaming Discussion. I'm one of those purchasing a new iPad primarily for gaming. Most of the best games I've played this year have been on the iOS platform, and aside from the iPad's obvious advantage in its wealth of utility, the Vita has nothing of interest to me until Sound Shapes and I can wait for a 3DS redesign.

Just saying.

With Kindle I also think it's specialization. iPad just can't compete when it comes to simple book reading. I actually get the feeling that very few people actually read on iPads regularly. Apple never actually boasts about book sales on iPad, which makes me believe they must be pretty bad.

The iPad is not a gaming device, it is a tablet pc that can game and much more

THere is a diff... and a hefty price tag difference at that
