This time around the iPad launched in a lot of countries and the numbers for the 3DS are US only. But yeah, if you look at $$$ Apple doesn't only kick Nintendo's ass, they could buy Hollywood and still have plenty of billions left in their war chest.

A lot of people feelin threatened i see.

It makes sense. Install base size dictates sales potential of software on the platform. Imagine if mainstream game companies start developing exclusively for iPad leaving consoles dry. Of course, I am exaggerating here (for now at least).

I think a way to insulate is to have strong first party developers.

Not yet.

The first iPhone wasn't even able to run third party applications, the only games you had was some shitty browser games. The new iPad can run things like Infinity Blade Dungeons, in two years we can expect some unbelievable graphics on the iThings.

But the Epic exec said the tablets of this world would need 8 years to catch up with the next-gen consoles after they release.

Who knows why people freak out so much. I've never owned anything Apple myself but I am pretty impressed with the iPad 3. It's something I'd consider buying.

The Apple crazies and the even crazier haters really are loony. It's like nothing can possibly co-exist.

I do find it fascinating that its PC gamers who aren't worried about iOS at all when the iPad is clearly being marketed as the post-PC product, the device that completely kills off the conventional personal computer. Maybe they're just more logical or maybe they just have their head buried even deeper in the sand, I guess it just depends on your perspective.

Well, for starters, PC Gaming is seriously hot right now, I think 2011 had record numbers in sales, plus PC Gaming and iOS gaming tend to be vastly different things once you get outside the facebook and casual sectors. Not bad for something that has been declared dead more times then I can recount. Moreover, this post-PC pablum doesn't hold as much water as those who propagate it might think. Even though we have laptops and , laptops that do so much and smartphones and tablets, television movies theaters and traditional radio still exist. The ultimate point is all of these things co-exist beside each other and I think it will be the same with tablets.

Odd to post this on a gaming only forum. Anyway, I will be getting one too, I think this is the Ipad that a lot of people will cave in and join the tablet train with.

Aren't these bad numbers by apple standards? iPad 2 sold 500k in 1 day in just the US (I need to reconfirm that). This is 6x as many but spread across 10 countries, I honestly expected more.

iPhone 4S sold 4 million in 3 days. Really these iPad sales are in line with expectations, they aren't that holy crap amazing. I guess it makes the reactions in here even better.

When Sega was releasing games on the Genesis bet you never would've thought they'd be releasing games on a future Nintendo console. Who would've though a decade ago that Apple would be the most valuable company around? Who would've thought that the Nintendo Wii would've changed the entire industry when it was announced? Fact is that the iPad/iPhone are game changers and sooner or later folks like yourself will have to get on the train or be left at the station.

Sure, there's no denying the impact that Apple's products have had on gaming. At the same time, though, I don't think the video game console market will shrivel up and disappear anytime in the foreseeable future.

The industry went through far worse than this nearly three decades ago with the arrival of personal computers. The home video game market shrunk greatly. People thought dedicated video game systems were a fad and a dead concept, and home computers were their complete replacement. Despite this, the video game market was still able to rebound, ultimately becoming even stronger than before, while coexisting side-by-side with the computer market which also grew exponentially over the years.

Apple didn't announce first weekend sales numbers for the iPad 2 as they were in extremely short supply, but the company sold more than 300,000 of the original iPad on its first day, and it took 28 days to move the first million iPads.

.

In all seriousness though, we might as well start posting news about the latest revisions of android phones or MacBooks in the gaming discussion if you start this topic here.

Yep. An iPad is not a dedicated games console, it's a general computing device that can be used for gaming, but that's true of anything with a CPU and a display. I can't remember seeing any threads about HP's laptop sales for instance.

So far my New iPad is getting hammered on Draw Somthing, Real Racing 2 HD, Infinity Blade 2 & Draw Racing 2 HD.

The retina games are SO PRETTY!!!! Makes me want 1080p in the next consoles as standard even more.

It's as much gaming as everything else for me.

Now give me a good rts & magic the gathering 2012 and I'm set.

I would be very happy if that happened.

That is kind of the other thing with tablets, the thing not being said when it comes to their sales vs say Desktop and Laptops and even smartphones. iPad styled tablets are rather new, the first one was introduced two years ago and a lot people want one for one reason or another. The style of device is new vs a desktop which people probably already got. Yea, I could see this being the new casual surfer media player thing for the moment that replaces the old desktop.

iPad will debut in 24 more countries this friday.
This launch is huge, and again think of economies of scale. Imagine if these sales lead them to reduce new iPad price by $100 next year, as they did with iPad 2. Competitors won't be able to make money selling a tablet close to the iPad. They can't do it now and it will only get worse.

I wondered how this thread got up to four pages and I didn't even see it before now… :lol

Great device, not for gaming though, but it's something that can really cut down on your need for a computer.

Why do I want to cut down on my need for a computer? I can get a computer that's more powerful than the iPad, that I can type on, and that I don't have to hold up, for less money than the iPad.

Since consoles are trying to be more than gaming machines and adding TV apps, and such, fair game for off topic side? I need to make sure in case I want to make a thread.

A lot of the things that you needed a computer to read up on, like news sites and RSS feeds, social networking, sports and forums and many other things can can now be done on an very portable device now.

I went to Best Buy yesterday and took a look at the iPad section. Four iPads were there, some were supposed to be iPad 2s, and some the "New iPad." I honestly could not tell which one was which...

It is truly amazing how people still do not consider idevices a platform for proper gaming. This thread should be in gaming.

I think it's the fact that most people won't pay more than 99¢ for games leading to developers not really making anything other than casual games that causes the caustic reaction from gamers.

That, and the lack of buttons. A third party really needs to establish a de facto standard button-based bluetooth controller, because Apple's certainly not going to.

I can't possibly understand how anyone can consider tablets a serious threat to home consoles. Handhelds, yes. But home consoles? Anyone wanna play the new Mario with a touch screen? Assassin's Creed 3, you no longer have to press buttons! Call of Dutay, you can now aim by touching your opponents... if only you could talk to the monsters.

Consoles will die out, fair enough. But so will every other device, eventually, until we can transform our physical selves into robots.

Yep, choice and innovation born out of competitive rivalry needs to go away ...

I for one would shudder if Apple was our one true overlord, I like variety being the spice of life. I personally think all tablets are pointless in the face of proper laptops and desktops., but many people like their Apple or Google tablet, that is fine, that helps all of us in the end.

Anyone who has truly looked into iOS gaming would know that is not true.

It's the stigma, sure, but not the reality.

Before the new iPad, Apple has only one iPad (with 3 configs) to sell.

3 million is the sales number for only the New iPad. iPad 2 dropped price and is selling in parallel with the new iPad this time. So the total iPad sales number should be higher than 3 mil.
