Apple sells 3 million new iPads in 3 days

Pretty sure that's been denied and there's no proof of it so, try harder.

Not to say it isn't possible, but using it as proof of anything? Come on, son, why you trollin so much eh? Tough day at work?

Not to mention the varying interpretations it could have, like Iwata's GDC speech where he was merely speaking against a particular development mindset and the pricing that goes with it which, if adopted, could harm the kind of games Nintendo and others are known for, and basically he was just reassuring people Nintendo won't do such a thing more than anything, as well as telling the developers there that they don't absolutely have to follow that approach themselves, if what they actually want to do is something different, which can still be successful. While accepting it's right for some, and citing successful examples in all fields.

That doesn't answer the question though.

5 million cars sold in a month. Nintendo is reportedly terrified because the 3DS only sold 4 million in a whole year!

Hahahahahahahahaahaha

hahahahahahaahah

I'll never understand why people are so scared of Apple.

Tried GTA3 on a friends iPad 2. Told him it was cool, but it really wasn't.

But yeah, convenience will always outweigh all other criterias. If people find it more convenient to play on tablets, consoles may have a problem. On the flip side, though, web browsers with all kinds of small, free games has existed for years now. Didn't kill consoles.

The thing about casual customers is that they're not reliable customers for a publisher or developer. They may buy a particular game they like, but they may not even recognize that a sequel is out. I picture the iOS/Android landscape as some kind of gold rush, there are some huge winners and a hell of lot of losers.

Well atleast Wario64 was banned since he posted this in the wrong section. I mean the iPad has absolutely nothing to do with games.

So happy that loser was banned.
(lol)

No seriously thats a pretty cool number. Unfortunatly I don't have the money to upgrade every year or even every other year so I'm still stuck with my 256mb of ram iPad 1. Luckily since iOS 5.1 it doesn't crash as often for me. Atleast when browsing the web or youtube videos...

Will probably get a new one next year. Ipad 5 at the latest.

Why? Why do yall let them get to you so, lol? The ipad3 looks awesome. I'd like to get one and I've never had one before. But I'm not going to stop playing traditional consoles either. If eventually Apple is the only game in town I'll have to suck it up and roll with them though I'd miss gaming the way it is now an awful lot. Anyway, good sales. Seems like an awesome device.

At least someone around here is rational. :)

This is not a good counter-argument. In fact, Android did stake out a very large chunk of marketshare (not profits) and became a thriving player in the market, its own issues aside. The greater importance of the app ecosystem in the tablet space relative to the smartphone space and enormous category lead Apple has built up are what makes it less likely for a competitor to replicate this sort of success (which, while notable, still isn't remotely comparable to the market-annihilating dominance MS wielded during the reign of Windows).

What makes tablets less competitive is they can't be given for free/low cost & paid by a contract. Also Apple controls its supply chain like no others, from most components to Apple Stores. First mover advantage gave them economies of scale that makes competing with them feature for feature a lost battle (no money to be made for competitors). iPad seems, and probably is invincible for a long time to come.

These numbers are insane.

Did you guys hear about the cars today?

1) They can play videogames
and 2) every other jackoff owns one
and 3) everyone is buying videogames for their cars
and 4) some gamers spend 95% of their game time in their car
AND 5) Nintendo is coming out with their own car + console hybrid as their next flagship product.

But man, cars aren't gaming devices. That's fanboy talk.

Before anyone thinks differently, I own a confetti of iDevices as well as a 3DS

Wow that is incredible first day sales numbers. Sitting back and thinking about it this came as a shock to me. I have NEVER owned a iOS based product. No IPAD's, Iphones, Touches, or even the older school Ipod's and Nano's.

I'm not quite sure what I'm missing out on but I know I'm missing out on something. I've owned several android devices, a zune at one time or another, psp, ect... Just never anything from Apple.

Fuck I should try an fix that if I ever have a good amount of money to buy into the brand. That's always been the problem. I'm a thrifty dude and just have a hard time rationalizing the price difference.

Now this is better than what you posted before. You're getting closer to making a useful post and answering that person's question.

more inferior gaming platforms for everyone! Can't wait for our awkward controller-less, simplified gaming overlords

I can't wait until casual gaming gets more and more dumbed down and "streamlined" so that it actually becomes movies. Maybe then gaming will be... well, gaming once again.

HURRY THE HELL UP ALREADY.

This isn't really true - produce both in the US and abroad has a long history of labour abuses and subhuman treatment of workers.

How much are produce workers paid? How much are people at the Foxconn factories paid? How many of the workers in each group are illegal immigrants? Maybe if Apple made more compelling devices for games at lower prices, the produce workers would be happier and all that nasty slave labor wouldn't be an issue!

Also, I'd like some statistics on infant development with regards to play. Babies create their own games, and they're fun to play with. Babies may be the gaming device with the highest numbers of all!

Wow, that's a huge number.

A sensational quip: Perhaps Epic should only keep pandering to iPad and give up on MS and Sony since it's best for the console makers to throw in the towel since their consoles will never reach sales figure as high as that in a span of 3 days.

/trollface

Muahahahaha

Seriously though, I am surprised that so many people spent north of $400 given how some people here always are only too keen to bring up the topic of recession which would cause a console costing around $400 would spell its doom. Of course, the iPad's main function isn't to play games even though it is well versed in it generating great sales through app store. It's a great mobile product and apple fanatics' contributions not withstanding has done a great job of proliferating itself so rapidly.

Who knows why people freak out so much. I've never owned anything Apple myself but I am pretty impressed with the iPad 3. It's something I'd consider buying.

The Apple crazies and the even crazier haters really are loony. It's like nothing can possibly co-exist.

I do find it fascinating that its PC gamers who aren't worried about iOS at all when the iPad is clearly being marketed as the post-PC product, the device that completely kills off the conventional personal computer. Maybe they're just more logical or maybe they just have their head buried even deeper in the sand, I guess it just depends on your perspective.

Well...
I tried to be entertained by the thread, but man, this is part vicious, part silly, and mostly confused banter.

GG Apple on making a powerful all-in-one device that people want to buy.
One of these days, I might give the iPad a second chance.
I'm out.

BTW, why so many people gets mad when Apple sells a ton of iThings? Are you guys Nintendo shareholders or something?

Gaming might not be a zero sum game, but new devices, especially ones with new form factors or input devices can greatly shake up the way that developer resources are allocated. I'd imagine that most folks that get riled up by the Wario64 threads don't really like the Apple take on gaming and are worried about the genres and systems that they love drying up in the future or becoming increasingly niche. Is that not evident? I feel funny that I have to explain this. It's like a gamer from the era of hardcore twitch PC FPS games (Quake 3 Arena and what not) looking at a future where even PC games are increasingly created for the tastes of console gamers and simplified and slowed down for duel stick input.

Doesn't really chafe me that much though. For my example above stuff like Quake Live, Tribes Ascend and what not all still exist. Plus I personally like the AppStore bring down the price of portable games as well as reviving asynchronous multiplayer.

Well deserved. Amazing piece of hardware that is. Apple just needs to get on the ball and release a Bluetooth controller for traditional games and I'll be a happy camper. Tablets are the future.

This screen is the future.

Why should PC gamers be worried about the ipad? Can the iPad play BF3,SC2,WoW or any other PC game? Thats why PC gamers arent worried

i have an iPad 2 and yeah its cool tech but nothing id trade a Desktop for.

I knew that this thread would have me rolling at some point. You can always count on apple threads for that. The sad thing is that a lot of people who seem like they're trolling might be not...

In all seriousness though, we might as well start posting news about the latest revisions of android phones or MacBooks in the gaming discussion if you start this topic here.

This generation the big three combined media and gaming like never before. Using Netflix, Hulu, ESPN, music services, etc. Next gen will most likely become even more focused on streamed media and social networking in conjunction with the actual gaming features. The iOS devices have just beat them to the punch.

Actually, it can. You just need to connect mouse & keyboard. Or a gamepad, if you fancy that stuff.

The belief is that console + portable gaming is dead/dying because people are buying iPads instead of these devices.

But that same statement holds true for computers as well. People are forgoing computers to buy their new iPad, more so then they are doing with other gaming devices.

The market decreases, and people stop playing the PC game of upgrading parts every year and instead just replace their iPad every year.

I don't subscribe to the notion in the first place, I just find it fascinating that its always frame as how the iPad is the portable or console killer and not what the device is actually trying to do, be the PC killer.

Can the iPad play BF3,SC2,WoW or any other PC game?

Not yet.

The first iPhone wasn't even able to run third party applications, the only games you had was some shitty browser games. The new iPad can run things like Infinity Blade Dungeons, in two years we can expect some unbelievable graphics on the iThings.

Why not? The PC isn't a gaming centered piece of hardware. The Xbox has become more media and social networking focused. Should we not include those pieces of the pie too?

And that's just it -- it's a battle of ecosystems. Gaming, with or without buttons, is just going to be one checklist feature on the next systems from Sony and Microsoft; just like it is for Apple.

Exactly. We can already see this with Microsoft. Look at how the company focuses so much of its attention on their XBL gold features outside of gaming. Microsoft understands where we are heading as does Apple.
