Apple sells 3 million new iPads in 3 days

Yet gaming software sells a lot better on the iPad than on the PC (with the exception of stuff like WoW).

Well, off couse you can, if you like pain. As you just said, you posted on gaf with vita, however you are not posting on gaf right now with vita. I bet you will not be posting on neogaf with vita very often.

I post from Vita more often than from my iPhone 4S.
I post from iPad more often than Vita (mainly because of copy-n-paste, YouTube and the large screen).

I surf on Vita often before I sleep. ^_^

If Sony add YouTube support and copy-n-paste, I may surf on Vita more often than iPad because it's lighter.

Does the Xbox allow streaming of Netflix, Hulu, ESPN? Does it have social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter? Whatabout music services? Does it also allow you to stream from your home network? Well those aren't gaming features. Guess the Xbox isn't a gaming device.

You can't will the iPad into becoming a gaming device. The Xbox was a gaming device well before those things were implemented. The iPad can play "games" (like my DirectTV satellite box can) but I'm not going to make the leap and put it on the same level of an Xbox or a PlayStation.

That's just ridiculous.

And I do it with my phone even less, because Vita is more comfortable for me. But my laptop is ultimately the fastest and most comfortable option so that's what I use 98% of the time.

By comparison, I had never ever posted with my PSP, DS or PS3. Note that all those are very old systems.

Now, could you answer why were you lying and outright saying that "you can only use games on Vita"? You are ignoring video playback, twitter, or music, offline or online. And you can use all that while gaming without problems or waiting. So?

If you want, you can only use games on vita, I don't see where the lie is. Now seriously, what I meant was that the main usage of Vita is to play portable games, and for doing that Vita is the best. However, for doing all the other things, the Ipad wins hands down. This is what I meant. If Vita had a killer web browsing experience, this could make a difference. Look Nintendo, they put a "3D" in the name of the device because they know this way they attract the casual gamers too.

These threads are crazy filled with people scared of Apple and what its accomplishing. Times are changing, gaming is no longer a thing done on consoles, PCs or tranditional dedicated handhelds.

Gaming is changing, whether a few scared gamers like it or not.

This post is exactly what I'm talking about. You are so frightened by the iPad that you'll delve into complete and utter denial in efforts to convince yourself you are right. The iPad is a game changer, the thing plays all sorts of games. Many top tier publishers are now supporting it and it has quite a few 'core' titles already releasing on it. You can rest assured though that the iPad isn't going to take away from or replace your button experience you have today, just add to it. There is nothing to be afraid of, the iPad is not going to get you in your sleep.

Stop pretending, and start accepting. The iPad is here to stay, and as time goes on your favorite developers are going to start developing for it.

Except Microsoft defined the Xbox as an entertainment system. The original Nintendo was an entertainment system. Sony has the Playstation as part of its Computer Entertainment label. So yea.

When a good third of the new ipad unveiling was spent talking about graphics and games, complete with game developer appearances, I fail to see how anyone can NOT call the ipad a gaming device.

What about something like the PSP or Vita? Those both launched with a significant focus on media as well as games, but are considered gaming devices.

To be fair, the original NES was called "Entertainment System" because of the fear that selling it back then as a gaming device; it would bomb in the US (same way that in Japan, it was known as the "Family Computer" ); not because it was an actual "entertainment system". :p

Though as weird as it sounds there's some truth into that. The iDevices has evolved into many things. It started as a music player/multimedia player. Then games, then internet, then.. more and more of everything. While the Xbox, etc. were devices that started as gaming mostly with other aspects (online, movies, etc.) as secondary/additions.

That companies create this names/descriptions to try to sell the product to everyone, there's that too.

Not saying that it makes the iDevices not about gaming, but that the definition will always vary depending on who you ask. Same way, that to many the 3DS or the Wii do not offer "real gaming".

Why do we have to like the affects that Apple and iOS are having on the game industry and the games that we play?

Looking at the NES as an entertainment system based on it's title rather than it's functionality is akin to looking at the Gameboy as a boy rather than a handheld gaming device.

I'm enjoying the fun in this thread.

it's a device. You play games on it. People buy games for it. Companies make money selling said games. What more do you need? Some arbitrary "hardcore" standard?

Anyone can say anything. Do Microsoft and Sony meet the benchmarks that would allow them to be considered as such, despite what they "say"? I know the same isn't true about the iPad being a "gaming device"

why does it need to be on the level of an xbox or playstation to be considered a gaming device?

It doesn't need to be (like Nintendo handhelds). It's just not anywhere near what I (or most) people would even consider being a gaming device.

If the iPad is a gaming device, then pretty much ANYTHING can be a gaming device. But it's a fact that it does not fit the standard, conventional definition of being a gaming device. Unless the definition is expanded, I just don't see it working.

That's debatable.

I don't think it is. I believe the general consensus is that games on the portable handheld systems are, on average, better than what you can find on iOS. The argument for iOS is that the games are cheaper and it is possible to have equal or greater amounts of enjoyment with an array of games equal in value to a single 3DS/Vita game.

And on the hardware side, dedicated devices are most often better than multifunction devices, if not more convenient. People go on and on about how powerful the iPad is compared to dedicated gaming handhelds but all that power isn't going solely to gaming, it's there so the iPad can run a large variety of applications and run them all at once. By comparison, you can build a PC with very similar parts and specifications to the Nintendo Wii but good luck trying to run a game with the dolphin emulator on that PC .

Ok, you like pain, confirmed. You deserve to post with vita :P

I simply prefer Vita's larger screen and text prediction compared to iPhone. ^_^
iPhone's auto-correction p*ssed me off sometimes/often too.

The Vita web browser has some rendering bugs but they are not showstoppers for me.

For me, iPad is still the best in web browsing at this point. Hope it has Vita's text prediction instead of the iOS auto text correction though.

Yes...it IS a gaming device. But it's not comparable to the Xbox, PlayStation, Wii, etc. (or those companies' handhelds). That's why I had "gaming device" mostly in quotes because it probably wasn't the most accurate (or specific) description.

Jesus some people still exist in a faux reality where iOS isn't a serious gaming platform?

That must be a sad place to live in. My iPod Touch has given me more hours of portable gaming goodness than any other handheld I've ever owned in my life.

But what about Xbox Live on Windows Phone? Microsoft said it's their mobile gaming platform and that they were serious about it.

LOL

People who think iOS devices are not competing with gaming consoles and portables are deluded. It's the same gadget money. People can and will choose an iPad/iPhone over Vita, 3DS or 360.

iPad is a well-made computing device and I am glad it's doing well, though personally I can't justify buying it.

So people say Vita's too big to be a portable

but then it always gets comapred to the iPad which is fucking hueg height-wise

Hopefully this gen we get more than just a handful of games that make full use of the power

Want that thing to get get hot!!

Spending that much time playing iPod Touch games seems very sad to someone like me who has spent hundreds of hours playing super deep RPGs like Tactics Ogre and Devil Survivor on my PSP and DS over the past few years.

Of course iOS is a serious gaming platform. I just have zero interest in playing any of the games available for my iPhone 4S. If I have five minutes to kill I'd rather check Twitter or surf the web instead.

People can and will choose a 360, 3DS or Vita over an Ios device too, if I wasn't planning on getting a Vita I would get an iPad. People are making money management decisions all the time.

Lot of talk about iPad taking customers away from 3DS, Vita, etc. I think the most customers they're stealing away, are those who were thinking of buying a laptop.

The only thing that's ridiculous is your hilarious denial that the iPad is a gaming device while giving no reasons whatsoever for that denial. The iPad is a gaming device, end of story. Developers make games. Those games can be played on the iPad. Therefore, the iPad is a gaming device. Simple as that.

True but people here often suggest that tablets and smartphones are in no way competing with dedicated gaming hardware, which is ridiculous.

They are competing for money and time.

Waiting for someone to answer this.

Competition. The games you know and love aren't going anyway. What you would call 'traditional' games are as successful as ever, and that demand is not going to disappear because Apple makes iPad. But it does mean that console makers and game developers now have to offer more for less in order to stay competitive. It's not going to kill gaming, only improve it and open it up for a lot more people.

You've described me, anyway. Would I spend hundreds of dollars to play Angry Birds and other touchy-slidey games? Hell naw. But as a highly portable computer? Hell yeah. It'll probably be my next computer purchase.

The fact they exist just offers me deviation, something simple from my usual gaming experiences.

What's sad is trying to belittle someone else's entertainment choices. I've spent countless hours playing deep games like Monster Hunter (fuck you Capcom for not localizing any of them nowadays), but now I find myself playing more on iPhone. Why? Because my iPhone is with me 100% of the time -- it is now an extension of my body. The games aren't typically as deep, but there are tons of very solid games out there. Hero Academy isn't as deep as Disgaea, but it's still solid (and cheap).

Dedicated devices are on the way out. I have a dedicated GPS device but my iPhone has taken its job thanks to Waze (free, amazing GPS app). I have dedicated gaming devices but I think the same will eventually happen to them.

If you play and buy games for a device it's a gaming device. What the hell are you talking about? In a few years Apple already had a system in place for achievements and leader boards. You can easily see what your friends are playing. Many of the social features on iOS work a lot better than same stuff on both 3DS and Vita.

But what about Xbox Live on Windows Phone? Microsoft said it's their mobile gaming platform and that they were serious about it.

I know a good gaming platform when I see it. That's why I own an iPod Touch in addition to my Windows Phone :-P

It seems "very sad" to me that you're incapable of understanding that different people have vastly different tastes. My post was not an anti-PSP/DS/etc. post. It was a pro-iOS post.

It's absolutely fantastic that you've had those great experiences. I have no interest in deep, involved RPGs on the go. I'd rather spend hours playing Hero Academy, Sword and Sworcery, and other such games instead.

I was commenting on those deluded enough to still not consider iOS a serious gaming platform. It most definitely is, and in your post you seem to agree. So why are you trying to argue?

What are the exclusives?

Right now I'm playing Draw Something, which is iOS/Android exclusive [party/casual]. Ascension gets a lot of gameplay, of course, which is iOS exclusive and made my top ten last year [board/card]. Tiny Tower also made my top ten last year (iOS/Android exclusive) [sim/casual]. I've been playing the weekly levels of Run Roo Run (iOS exclusive) [platformer]. I just bought the new Flight Control Rocket which I haven't been very impressed with (iOS exclusive) [arcade]. Another dud recently has been Azkend 2 (iOS exclusive) [puzzle], and Mass Effect Infiltrator (iOS/Android?) sucked too [tps]. Obviously been playing some Jetpack Joyride (iOS/Android?) [infinite runner]. The next game I'm planning on playing is Walking Mars (iOS Exclusive) [exploration platformer] unless On The Wind (iOS exclusive) comes out first [exploration platformer]. I was going to double back and pick up Dark Meadow (iOS/Android) [horror/exploration] when they were going to make it free, but that never happened. Chaos Rings 2 (iOS exclusive?) [rpg] is this week as well but I'm waiting for a sale before I check that out. League of Evil 2 [platformer] is cheap this week too (iOS exclusive) and I'll check that out soon too. Everyone's been saying good stuff about Adventure Bar Story [rpg/sim] (iOS exclusive) but I haven't checked it out yet either. Kabouter just got a used iPhone so I was gonna start playing Q-Rank [trivia] (iOS exclusive) to compete with him. Nimblebit also just announced Pocket Planes [sim/casual] (iOS exclusive) and I'll check that out when it comes out.

It'd be fine if the argument was "traditional game makers have to step up their game", like what you are posting here. That seems a little more open ended and isn't forecasting doom.

(I would say) posts like the one below seem similar but are more likely to incense than to make decent headway:
As many have said in this thread, they will not be buying a 3DS/Vita/Wii U because they purchased the iPhone/iPad. Those are dollars lost my friend.

Regarding Apple: Congrats. Haven't used an iPad before. While pinch to zoom is nice on my smart phone it's only necessary because the screen is so damn small and I'm liable to "click" the wrong link unless I zoom in very closely. I'm assuming this is less of a problem on tablet devices.

If the iPad is a gaming device, then pretty much ANYTHING can be a gaming device. But it's a fact that it does not fit the standard, conventional definition of being a gaming device. Unless the definition is expanded, I just don't see it working.

simples : How many games are on the Ipad?

It's not a -dedicated- games machine for sure, but that's by the by - Gaming is just another string to the ipads bow and is another reason why they can sell 3m units in 3 days at $499 -minimum-

It's why the platform obviously has a pretty clear future. Not everyone who buys an ipad will hit up gaming hardcore, but i bet a very high percentage delve in.

I still see tablets, especially iPads, as nothing more than expensive toys. I don't see how they can increase productivity in any way a laptop couldn't. And don't think that I am a person who hates technology. I own a custom built gaming PC, a laptop, a netbook, and smart phone. I see tablets as nothing more than just the experience of a smart phone on a large touchscreen but without the productivity offered by a laptop. Windows 8 with the Metro UI helps alleviate this issue some but still think a laptop would be cheaper and more useful in nearly every scenario. The only exception is if you just love playing Angry Birds, using Facebook/Twitter, and reading (non-Flash) webpages. In other words, a toy.

You don't have to like the affect Apple is having on the game industry.

But there's a difference between "I don't like the affects" and "the iPad is not a gaming device."

true, but a lot of the times ios gaming threads have a fair number of "this is where gaming is going, deal with it" posts and for some folks who have been a fan of gaming for a long time they don't want to see their hobby go in that direction. There's nutjobs on both sides but if the general sentiment was more along the lines of "gaming is ALSO going in this ios direction" there would be a lot less bitching. I guess. I dunno, it doesn't really matter. If gaming goes all Apple I'll just have to deal with it for the sake of my hobby.

That's nice. My ipad weighs about a pound and a half and gets ten hours in battery life. What's a netbook?
