Well, off couse you can, if you like pain. As you just said, you posted on gaf with vita, however you are not posting on gaf right now with vita. I bet you will not be posting on neogaf with vita very often.
Does the Xbox allow streaming of Netflix, Hulu, ESPN? Does it have social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter? Whatabout music services? Does it also allow you to stream from your home network? Well those aren't gaming features. Guess the Xbox isn't a gaming device.
And I do it with my phone even less, because Vita is more comfortable for me. But my laptop is ultimately the fastest and most comfortable option so that's what I use 98% of the time.
By comparison, I had never ever posted with my PSP, DS or PS3. Note that all those are very old systems.
Now, could you answer why were you lying and outright saying that "you can only use games on Vita"? You are ignoring video playback, twitter, or music, offline or online. And you can use all that while gaming without problems or waiting. So?
You can't will the iPad into becoming a gaming device. The Xbox was a gaming device well before those things were implemented. The iPad can play "games" (like my DirectTV satellite box can) but I'm not going to make the leap and put it on the same level of an Xbox or a PlayStation.
That's just ridiculous.

I post from Vita more often than from my iPhone 4S.
I post from iPad more often than Vita (mainly because of copy-n-paste, YouTube and the large screen).
I surf on Vita often before I sleep. ^_^
If Sony add YouTube support and copy-n-paste, I may surf on Vita more often than iPad because it's lighter.
To be fair, the original NES was called "Entertainment System" because of the fear that selling it back then as a gaming device; it would bomb in the US (same way that in Japan, it was known as the "Family Computer" ); not because it was an actual "entertainment system".Except Microsoft defined the Xbox as an entertainment system. The original Nintendo was an entertainment system. Sony has the Playstation as part of its Computer Entertainment label. So yea.
These threads are crazy filled with people scared of Apple and what its accomplishing. Times are changing, gaming is no longer a thing done on consoles, PCs or tranditional dedicated handhelds.
Gaming is changing, whether a few scared gamers like it or not.
This post is exactly what I'm talking about. You are so frightened by the iPad that you'll delve into complete and utter denial in efforts to convince yourself you are right. The iPad is a game changer, the thing plays all sorts of games. Many top tier publishers are now supporting it and it has quite a few 'core' titles already releasing on it. You can rest assured though that the iPad isn't going to take away from or replace your button experience you have today, just add to it. There is nothing to be afraid of, the iPad is not going to get you in your sleep.
Stop pretending, and start accepting. The iPad is here to stay, and as time goes on your favorite developers are going to start developing for it.
Except Microsoft defined the Xbox as an entertainment system. The original Nintendo was an entertainment system. Sony has the Playstation as part of its Computer Entertainment label. So yea.

why does it need to be on the level of an xbox or playstation to be considered a gaming device?
When a good third of the new ipad unveiling was spent talking about graphics and games, complete with game developer appearances, I fail to see how anyone can NOT call the ipad a gaming device.
What about something like the PSP or Vita? Those both launched with a significant focus on media as well as games, but are considered gaming devices.
That's debatable.
Ok, you like pain, confirmed. You deserve to post with vita![]()
it's a device. You play games on it. People buy games for it. Companies make money selling said games. What more do you need? Some arbitrary "hardcore" standard?
Not a single one of those 3 million bought it because of games.
Jesus some people still exist in a faux reality where iOS isn't a serious gaming platform?
That must be a sad place to live in. My iPod Touch has given me more hours of portable gaming goodness than any other handheld I've ever owned in my life.

People who think iOS devices are not competing with gaming consoles and portables are deluded. It's the same gadget money. People can and will choose an iPad/iPhone over Vita, 3DS or 360.
iPad is a well-made computing device and I am glad it's doing well, though personally I can't justify buying it.
Why do we have to like the affects that Apple and iOS are having on the game industry and the games that we play?
The only thing that's ridiculous is your hilarious denial that the iPad is a gaming device while giving no reasons whatsoever for that denial. The iPad is a gaming device, end of story. Developers make games. Those games can be played on the iPad. Therefore, the iPad is a gaming device. Simple as that. You can't will the iPad into becoming a gaming device. People can and will choose a 360, 3DS or Vita over an Ios device too, if I wasn't planning on getting a Vita I would get an iPad. People are making money management decisions all the time.

Lot of talk about iPad taking customers away from 3DS, Vita, etc. I think the most customers they're stealing away, are those who were thinking of buying a laptop.

You don't have to like the affect Apple is having on the game industry.Waiting for someone to answer this.
What's sad is trying to belittle someone else's entertainment choices. I've spent countless hours playing deep games like Monster Hunter (fuck you Capcom for not localizing any of them nowadays), but now I find myself playing more on iPhone. Why? Because my iPhone is with me 100% of the time -- it is now an extension of my body. The games aren't typically as deep, but there are tons of very solid games out there. Hero Academy isn't as deep as Disgaea, but it's still solid (and cheap).Spending that much time playing iPod Touch games seems very sad to someone like me who has spent hundreds of hours playing super deep RPGs like Tactics Ogre and Devil Survivor on my PSP and DS over the past few years.
Of course iOS is a serious gaming platform. I just have zero interest in playing any of the games available for my iPhone 4S. If I have five minutes to kill I'd rather check Twitter or surf the web instead.
What are the exclusives?
If the iPad is a gaming device, then pretty much ANYTHING can be a gaming device. But it's a fact that it does not fit the standard, conventional definition of being a gaming device. Unless the definition is expanded, I just don't see it working.
But what about Xbox Live on Windows Phone? Microsoft said it's their mobile gaming platform and that they were serious about it.
LOL

It'd be fine if the argument was "traditional game makers have to step up their game", like what you are posting here. That seems a little more open ended and isn't forecasting doom.True but people here often suggest that tablets and smartphones are in no way competing with dedicated gaming hardware, which is ridiculous.
They are competing for money and time.
Competition. The games you know and love aren't going anyway. What you would call 'traditional' games are as successful as ever, and that demand is not going to disappear because Apple makes iPad. But it does mean that console makers and game developers now have to offer more for less in order to stay competitive. It's not going to kill gaming, only improve it and open it up for a lot more people.
As many have said in this thread, they will not be buying a 3DS/Vita/Wii U because they purchased the iPhone/iPad. Those are dollars lost my friend.

But there's a difference between "I don't like the affects" and "the iPad is not a gaming device."
I still see tablets, especially iPads, as nothing more than expensive toys. I don't see how they can increase productivity in any way a laptop couldn't. And don't think that I am a person who hates technology. I own a custom built gaming PC, a laptop, a netbook, and smart phone. I see tablets as nothing more than just the experience of a smart phone on a large touchscreen but without the productivity offered by a laptop. Windows 8 with the Metro UI helps alleviate this issue some but still think a laptop would be cheaper and more useful in nearly every scenario. The only exception is if you just love playing Angry Birds, using Facebook/Twitter, and reading (non-Flash) webpages. In other words, a toy.
