Apple sells 3 million new iPads in 3 days

With Kindle I also think it's specialization. iPad just can't compete when it comes to simple book reading. I actually get the feeling people rarely reed at iPads at all. Apple never actually boasts about book sales on iPad, which makes me believe they must be pretty bad.

He's referring to the "Kindle Fire" tablet rather than the "Kindle" eInk reader.

Interesting to see people threatened by this thread's presence in Gaming Discussion. I'm one of those purchasing a new iPad primarily for gaming. Most of the best games I've played this year have been on the iOS platform, and aside from the iPad's obvious advantage in its wealth of utility, the Vita has nothing of interest to me until Sound Shapes and I can wait for a 3DS redesign.

Just saying.
Why do people always have to be threatened, or scared, like i've seen posted in this thread. Why can't they just feel like it's in the wrong section, since it's not a primary gaming device.

I know, cars will be touch too in the near future. However, I think that the main usage of the Ipad, like for any tablet, is to surf the web. Now, if only they would make a 12" version I would buy it for sure. I find a 10" screen a little bit too small for optimal web browsing.

ipad is good for watching shows too. I call it media consumption device.

So, is there a problem with the PC is to Console as iOS device is to handheld anology?

People buy the former because it can do so much more than the latter, and for some people because it can play games. The latter is dedicated to gaming and is generally better at it, but there's no reason both can't survive. Or is there something faulty with that logic?

Just cause it has games doesn't mean its a gaming device.

I can't imagine Apple being happy with losing 1/5 of its overall business at current time.
In isolation, sure.

If the decline of a market where they see something like a 10% marketshare would substantially benefit a market where they hold a 50-60% share, then I don't see why not.

Ideally they'd exist in parallel of course.

Does the Xbox allow streaming of Netflix, Hulu, ESPN? Does it have social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter? Whatabout music services? Does it also allow you to stream from your home network? Well those aren't gaming features. Guess the Xbox isn't a gaming device.

Whoa - that must be the most successful game of all time! I bet their revenue is amazing for free downloads!

I think their revenues are pretty pitful considering the game has been downloaded like half billion times. In 2011 they had about 100 mln dollars revenue. If I'm not mistaken Nintendo had more revenue on Pokemon Black and White than Rovio did on Angry Birds.

I don' think most people realize just how little money there is in iOS gaming compared to other platforms.

I do think iPad is killing Vita's potential. Look at the sales of both platforms since launch, why isn't Vita pulling such numbers? Probably because people buy other mobile devices, such as tablets. Sure iPads don't offer the same quality gaming experience than Vita, but they offer so much more than gaming. And this Retina screen: technophiles will all fall for it, it's that irresistible.

Kinda like the Kindle, 3DS is saved by its price point (and its mascots). More than ever, now new iPad launched, Vita also needs its price cut.

How is Vita for web brosing ? Would you use Vita to post on neogaf ? I would not. However, I would use an Ipad to post on neogaf. Will you use a Wii U to post on neogaf ? Well, maybe. This is the reason. Vita is essentially a portable gaming console, and you can only play games on it. Hardcore gamers are the main target of vita, the casuals will not care about it. Nintendo is smart.

I think the main difference, is people buy PC's just for gaming. They build them completely with gaming in mind. On PC's, consoles and handhelds you can buy triple A $60 games. Games studios dump tons of money, and sometimes years into.

This is not the case with the IPAD, at least right now. The IPAD is also designed and marketed without games in mind. All you have to do is watch the IPAD 3 reveal keynote for that to think in. A couple companies showing off two pieces of shit. It was a tack on.

When companies start to invest money into big budget, triple A Ipad games. Then I think all this will change.

Remember that the iPad is only two years old. You can't expect AAA support in just two years.

Great news, is an awesome device.
Sucks the usuals hyperboles and extreme stances some take:
-Either it's ruining gaming and it's the end!!
-Or It's the future of gaming, 3DS/Vita am dead!!

More ways to play games, and yet it's always turned into the usual wars.

I've posted on gaf with my Vita. It's absolutely false that "you can only play games on it". Why do you feel the need to lie?

He's right, though. Just because it has games, doesn't make a gaming device.

Like just because a movie has funny moments, doesn't make it a comedy.

It depends on what the primary use and intention is.

SO.... I still consider an iPad a gaming device, since many people DO use it primarily as a gaming device. Or their only device.

Come the fuck on.

Devices too tons of things these days, but just because they have a feature doesn't mean its good at it. iPad is a tablet that plays games. That was what I was trying to say. Home consoles, 3ds and Vita are better for gaming than iOS, period.

Edit: thanks mrkgoo, well said

I have iPhone 4S, iPad and Vita. I use all 3 to post on GAF, browse Twitter and FaceBook.

I watch YouTube on iPad and iPhone 4S, but I listen to music on Vita because of Music Unlimited.

Of course I game on Vita too.

Vita is indeed a core gamer machine now. But it's because of the price and Sony's current focus.

Interesting how the people banned in this thread fall on one side of the extreme and the other side was left untouched

Yeah, twitter and Music Unlimited work great on Vita.

Well, off couse you can, if you like pain. As you just said, you posted on gaf with vita, however you are not posting on gaf right now with vita. I bet you will not be posting on neogaf with vita very often.

I don't think the AAA model would survive on iOS.
If in some terrifying future Apple really does take over the games industry, there would definitely be a market left over from the console/PC era in which AAA games could succeed on the iPad. Providing there was a bluetooth controller or something ;)

The iPad is a gaming device somewhere in between a Roku box and a console.

It isn't designed with gaming as its primary purpose, and shouldn't have people pushing that narrative (unless it's to troll/rile people up). It is good at playing games, though - so it should be discussed like that.

And I do it with my phone even less, because Vita is more comfortable for me. But my laptop is ultimately the fastest and most comfortable option so that's what I use 98% of the time.

By comparison, I had never ever posted with my PSP, DS or PS3. Note that all those are very old systems.

Now, could you answer why were you lying and outright saying that "you can only use games on Vita"? You are ignoring video playback, twitter, or music, offline or online. And you can use all that while gaming without problems or waiting. So?

As an aside - I don't know if I'm more disappointed that Apple chose to spend its cash by paying it out stock holders or that I'm not one of those stock holders...

I have 2 iPhones and an iPad 2 and enjoy them but this BS over hyping this thing as taking over gaming is a bit out of hand, because it is a lie.

What becomes of iOS devices in 5-10 years that may develop into something that dominates gaming, but it sure won't be iPad3 or even iPad4. Likely be something new that plays iOS games that comes with a proper controller.

As far as functionality goes, a desktop computer is far more functional for posting on a forum, or doing anything that involves typing really, than a tablet.

In fact, it does nearly every conceivable task better, save for being portable. But... laptops.

And yet, here we all are talking about the death of the PC and the post-PC world that Apple is ushering in for us.

I don't think the Vita's poor sales have anything to do with how shit its browser is.
