So, with a budget of $60 a month, what would you guys buy if you were me? I was big into comics a couple of times, but the space always became an issue. Now, with the new iPad, space isn't an issue anymore. I would like a good mix of series that are funny, well written, maybe somehting more adult themed in nature (not porn, just a more mature storyline). I just don't know where to start with everything that's going on now. I figure $60 a month should get me around 18-20 titles and I could experiment for the first few months to see what I want to keep and get rid of. Any thoughts?

I'd be buying 8 monthly issues at the absolute most and be spending the rest on trades. Though, I guess I have read enough stuff by now to be really certain what I want more of.

It's best to get a mix of big 2+big indie(image, idw, dark horse)+ small indie. just browse the last few pages and see what titles are talked about. Popular books talked about in this thread are batman, uncanny xforce, secret avengers, american vampire, Locke & key, and Saga( which just started).

In for Answers. I recently came back to comics and have been reading Walking Dead, American Vampire, Invincible, a couple of X books, Ultimate Spiderman, and Batman. Would like to see what others recommend.

Exactly, the Warbird costume is ass this is much better.

it isnt ass though. as for why people are upset is because change is a motherfucker with comic fans. just look at the iron spider and bucky cap costumes. people fumed when they were released, got used to them, and then bitched when they were returned to their original costumes. i dont remember much of a response for spider tron though.....

DC Comics does 99cent sales every weekend, and their new comics drop a dollar in price if you wait a month. For example, you can buy back issues of Batman for $2 instead of $3.

Batman
Wonder Woman
Batwoman: Hydrology - (issues 1-5)
Batwoman: Elegy (1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7)

- Vertigo

Marvel
does 99cent sales every Monday (I think they may also do 99cent sales on the weekends), however they don't do the monthly price drop that DC does.

Daredevil
Uncanny X-Force
Wolverine and the X-Men

Independents have half-off deals intermittently (like right now).

Glory
The Walking Dead - half off sale until Thursday
Invincible - half off sale until Thursday, free Issue #1
Saga

Dark Horse store has great sales on weekends. Check them out.

Out of curiosity, are there any indications on how those online ventures are doing? I'm intrigued to know whether publishers are finding them profitable given the apparent frequent sales. I suppose they're going for a sort of Steam system, getting people hooked to digital content and getting impulse buys, but I wonder how that's working out.

Florida comic book store owner banned Mark Waid comics because of his stance on digital comics being the future.

I understand the fear of retailers, but...things change, man. Book stores are closing down more and more every year, music stores have all but vanished from the modern world, and damn near every video/movie rental store is a thing of the past. I have ONE Blockbuster in my area, when there used to be 4(along with all the other video rental places like HollywoodVideo, COX Video, etc). How long do you think the brick and mortar comic retailer can last in its current state? How long do you think they can hold back the tide of inevitability?

Haha, no big deal for Mark as that guy should be out of business within a couple years anyways.

So, what are you guys getting this week? My pull looks like this:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #682 - I am SO excited for this story, its almost comical. I've been waiting on a great Sinister Six comic since I was a little kid, and I think the creative team of Slott/Caselli/Ramos will be the ones to deliver. Can't wait!

AVENGERS X-SANCTION #4 - I have no idea why I'm getting this. I kinda just want to see how it ends?

BATMAN #7 - I like this book. It's not God's gift to superhero comics the way a lot of people make it out to be, but it's good. Batman hulking up out of nowhere in #6 was dumb as FUCK, though.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #514 - 2011 was an mixed bag year for this book, but this "Demon" story has been great. Fraction/Larrocoa getting back to the main storyline they've been telling since the very beginning. It's pretty impressive how many issues together these guys have been doing, and more often then not its a solid read(if pretty slow, and Larrocoa's humans are lol from time to time). Rarely my favorite book of the week, but its almost always a dependable read.

PROPHET #23 - I'm getting this and the last few issues because of the hype from around the comics blogsphere. My expectation that it's gonna be a solid comic, that gets overhyped because its different and confident in its storytelling. Kinda like that BKV book that came out last week.

SUPERCROOKS #1 (OF 4) - I keep checking these things out because I secretly hope I'll get the Mark Millar I loved from the late 90s-early 2000s, and it always ends in disappointment. I never learn though...I liked the preview enough, that's a good sign, right?

UNCANNY X-MEN #9 - Gillen GETS the X-men, and he's one of Marvel's most unappreciated talents, but I can only check out the non-Greg Land issues. Even then, Pacheco aint what he used to be. The June solicts have DUSTIN WEAVER on-board though, so promising times ahead!

WOLVERINE #303 - This story arc should be better then it is, but the need to double ship at the last minute means we got two different artists doing the same story, sometimes switching mid-scene. Also, it's pretty obvious that Sabretooth is only here because despite his many years on the book, Jason Aaron has never done a Wolverine/Sabretooth battle. He's kinda just...hanging around, at this point. Despite that, I'm still enjoying it, in a "Yakuza bikers wielding chainsaws" kinda way, but I'm hoping this is a strong conclusion to the last real story arc of the great Jason Aaron run on Wolverine.

Got both issues of Thief of Thieves.

It's interesting thus far but really aggravating to have to wait a month in between issues =\.

I want the story to unfold more immediately. Anyone else venture into reading it?

I enjoyed #1 and picked up #2 but haven't gotten around to reading yet.

Almost everything I read has a long wait in between Whispers #2 finally comes out next week and I'll be away so might end up missing it. Heart #4 finally comes out this week; #3 came out in January I think.

I liked the first issue a lot but i think i'm going to trade wait this because i don't want to add more books to my pull list and it doesn't seem like a book i really care about reading monthly.

I'm pretty selective when it comes to comics and getting into series, it's gotta be a pretty specific genre. Mainly noir/crime type stuff

I'm really into Criminal, I have this:
223.jpg

Such a bad ass coffee table book.

The whole 100 Bullets series and a lot of the Vertigo Crime graphic novels.

I've ventured into Transmetropolitan, DMZ and Walking Dead, but I really love that noir/crime/gritty style in a somewhat realistic setting.

EDIT: Suggestions for series similar to what I listed is more than welcome.

Gotham Central, also by Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka too.

I own a lot of Brubaker stuff. Catwoman is a great read. The first arc also has some beautiful Darwyn Cooke art

Speaking of Incognito that people recommended ( i read the first trade of Incongito and thought it was pretty good), a probably oversized hardcover collecting both volumes just got solicited, it would look good next to Criminal.

Stupidity , just stupidity. And it figures Rich Johnston's site will publish an opinion piece like this.

I generally don't have an issue with Bleeding Cool (It's not great, but better than the PR Regurgitator that CBR is), but lately they quality of the posts have went way downhill. The homoeroticism pieces on the AvX Covers in particular are obnoxious,

Well hopefully ereaders become more inexpensive, durable, and somebody releases one that works with an art program and a pressure sensitive stylus. The shitty wanna-be netbook tablet model does nothing for me.

As a media consumption device, I'll pay $100 and no more. See also, Touchpad.

As something I can create some neat shit on? I'll pay $400-500.

Pokemon the first movie, also by Ed Brubaker

Brubaker can't beat this:

At least stupid vampire Jubilee is gone. That has to count for something.

If Bendis is on Uncanny, I'm down to Wolverine/X-men and New Mutants. =(

Vampire Jubillee > Everything else done with here since after and before M day. Seriously that's almost not hyperbole, it's editorial and writers that have sullied a great concept for her, it's not like people were doing fuck all with her prior.

Hey thanks for saying all the same shit I just said! Why don't you go get your own contrarian opinion and come back when you aren't just ripping me off?

I wonder what a joyless existence feels like.

*reads Bandit's posts*

:(

Bandit feels the cold dark hole where his heart used to be with petty insults and Orc Stain #7, I wouldn't worry about him.

The bigger cause for concern is that Marvel editorial took Vampire Jubilee away from Brian Wood.

Because she's gonna die in AvX, callin' it now

Shield your eyes, LiQuid!

It's still shit. I'd rather they killed the joyful character she was than saddle her with vampire angst shit.
