Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

And Nintendo could say, "screenshots only, developers. People will wait until E3 to see the games in motion."

If they have a truly earthshattering secret regarding the controller, they could also say: "No controller screenshots."

If there's one thing I'm not worried about, it's whether or not Nintendo will have enough secrets leftover..

I'm fine with any true Wii U screenshots of games. That's enough to sate my appetite until E3.

I'm talking -to myself- about something like this:

wiiu_picojkl3s.jpg

(Upad will end up costing as much as the console)

I think it's a really nifty idea but it won't happen. I imagine it's too expensive (Also would need replacement bulbs) and it wouldn't work in daylight that well I imagine. You also, obviously need to have a flat surface to project to.

Matt was probably the best at getting leaks to us right on the eve of E3. I loathe IGN and the other large gaming news sites, but he was damn good at this kind of stuff, so he was a bigger loss than many realize. It seemed like he always had something good for us on that weekend before the festivities began.

Yeah and it's sort of ironic that he went to Apple. Does he still post anywhere about anything? I imagine Apple is as tight as Nintendo about leaks....until they want to leak something.

Oh my. Cookychan and EloquentM (perma)banned? This is depressing. Maybe it's just going to get crazier in here as E3 approaches.

Yeah, it sucks =/
both were great users
RIP

This is what Nintendo Gamer magazine says about the Wii U name.

They think that it's unlikely that the name will change, considering that Nintendo continued to push the "Wii U" brand for the January CES, and the GDC.

Well.... DUH!
what were they expecting? "Hey Y'all!!!!! this is the new Nintendo Juicy™ so now please
everyone forget the Wii U name.
Sometimes it amazes me how slow people is...

Keep in mind that E3 was a month earlier in 2006, though.

My Ready is Reggie :P

Yeah... no. Even with the Wii U pad, i dont see myself playing WoW with anything else than a keyboard and mouse. And it's not just because i've been playing and been used to that kind of control for years that i say that.

Strange.....I think I'd actually give WoW a shot if it was optimized for the Wii U controller.

Mmm.. Nintendo Juicy™. What could have been.. the first console whose marketing was aimed at 13-year-old girls? Genius!

Sucks about Cooky and Eloquent. They would've been fun to have around for E3.

I'm making a point to restrain myself around the more contentious topics, lest I type how I really feel and end-up in trouble. Bit my tongue until I tasted blood in that Kojima topic.

(and if WoW were to ever come to a Nintendo console, I'd have to try it out. Just once can't hurt.. right?)

From a CVG interview with Epic's Mark Rein, posted today:

You mentioned PS Vita and Wii U in your GDC presentation - those could be next on the list?

Yes. Absolutely.

And specifically on the Wii U, you've been true to your word when you previously said Epic would work on Nintendo platforms as soon as it made good enough hardware...

I think I said "like water on fish"! And then I went to the Nintendo press conference and they showed a little clip of Aliens: Colonial Marines made in our engine, running on the Wii U, and someone goes, 'what do you think now?' And I said, 'water, meet fish!'

We really are about that triple-A gaming experience, so we really do need platforms that can empower it. We feel like expelling a lot of energy trying to shoehorn ourselves onto different platforms that aren't a good fit doesn't make sense for us or our customers, or the future benefit of the industry. Sooner or later everybody upgrades and we can be beneficiaries of it - us and our licensees.

Nothing new, but nonetheless interesting. The interview in whole is very interesting as it concerns Unreal Engine 4 and related things, so check it out.

Same here, I always try to ignore people that only talk shit about any system.. especially Nintendo because I know we dance over the ban edge lol

Is he talking about UE3 or UE4?

Also, I cringe every time I hear a developer WANTING to make AAA games when it just seems so....risky. Don't sell 1+ million? BANKRUPT. I wish the whole industry would want lower-cost games to prevail. I dunno/ /thoughts

The majority of the industry is run by idiots that think giant budgets and razor thin margins are healthy.
Hollywood went through a similar era.
It'll take time, but the idiots will eventually be weeded out.

Sad, but I think a lot of the entities in the studio closures thread are victims of this mentality.

"Hey! Let's develop for platforms with a smaller userbase and much higher development costs! What could possibly go wrong? It's like taking candy from a baby!"

I've come to accept Wii U as a name, but damn, that logo is terrible... and I guess, part of why I disliked the name in the first place

chzNV.jpg

That looks like a Wii with a not-too-hot add-on. They should at least give it a new font, and more importantly: a new colour... the same grey Wii logo just isn't enticing. Any customer potentially allured by the Wii brand will be even more interested if it seems FRESH!

The console design is almost offensively boring. Nintendo needs to make the customers infatuated with the device. The last thing they want to do is make people consider whether or not they actually need the Wii U. And the more it seems like a hot new thing, the less that consideration comes into play

True. It's when someone is two-faced about Nintendo development that grinds my gears.

"I loooooove Nintendo soooo much!"
*one year later*
"Yeah, we're making a game for this, system, that system, that system..but not the Nintendo system."

Like the scene in History of the World, Part 1 with the senators walking by in front of the camera, all I hear from those types when this happens is "bullshit bullshit bullshit.."

And if the inclusion of a pico projector sounds too crazy/expensive, Nintendo could do this instead:

A cheap but powerful LED/laser, directly pointed at the user's face, being triggered/fired by game events.

100% Total immersion all the time - everytime!!

(WiiU bundle will include a voucher for a free -first- visit to an optician of your choice)

The whole logo makes me fear that Nintendo will indeed continue on with a boring white console, befitting of the logo and the image that they're aiming for.

One would think that if they're truly taking the core seriously, they'd try a bit more on the rebranding efforts.

Has Epic made any multiplatform games?
I mean, this gen, it's been...
What? The GoW games for MS, and then UT3 that was on PC and PS3 (sorta).

Nintendo need Epic support on the Wii U, just like they need Crytek and DICE's support.

And before you say "No, they don't need their support, they'll do fine without, Mario Kart etc. etc.!", no, they do need these developers on their system if they're to achieve their goal this generation.

Bulletstorm is often counted as an Epic game altough it was developed by People Can Fly. It was released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
Fort Night (?) could be multiplatform, too.

He's got a hardon for Ninty. Must be Miyasamus and her bootyliciousness. Actually, that made me throw up. Don't post that picture. And good to here that UE3 will start the gen off. Maybe MS wasn't ready to commit to 4 GB of ram? Amidoingitrite?

If FN is multi, then I be it'll hit Wii U.
I mean, it's a perfect fit for that controller!

hopefully these people find work someplace else and learn from the past foolish mistakes.

I am not against the big AAA games, now if we are we calling it AAAA that I am against :P
When those games turn out really good they change the industry for the better and there is lots of growth from that so I don't mind seeing ambitious games.

I laughed at that. Too many goofy references.

I'd like to think that Ciffy B wore him down. Got into his head.
Maybe he brought his Wii to the office, Rein saw the games made, and liked what he saw?

Naaah..!

Sadly, the folks who more often lose their jobs first were those who had nothing to do with the platform decision.

Alright - I did a quick summary of what happened in April 2006. It's a good idea to keep in mind for reference when thinking about how Nintendo conducts their information campaign during these time periods.

So.. let's walk down memory lane..

April 2006 Revolution News Highlights:
- rumored Bob Ross Game
- Twilight Princess: not known yet, but rumors discussing two versions were bandied-about
- Tony Hawk: Downhill Jam was rumored to be for launch
- Red Steel (including screenshots, interviews, and magazine scans)
- on the 15th, Matt from IGN revealed that Metroid Prime 3 would be playable at E3
- the first rumor of Sega releasing Nights on Revolution surfaced late in the month
- rumor of a Suda51/Grasshopper game to be unveiled at E3
- Dragon Ball Z Tenkaichi 2 revealed to be a Revolution game
- THQ revealed that they were bringing two Nickelodeon titles to the Revolution
- first rumors of the nunchuck having some motion-sensing feature(s)
- Elebits confirmed
- Skatto Golf Pangya Revolution
- Sega formally announces Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz
- Activision formally announces Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for Revolution
- on April 28, 2006: the Revolution's name was changed to Wii!

If Nintendo follows the Wii information release model, it looks like April is going to be a huge month for us here in the thread. =)

reasonable HYPE!

Why is this post making me nostalgia? That was only 6 years ago. I was still in high school when the last console switch happened. Goddamn this generation's been fucking looooong.

Well why shouldn't Epic "like" Nintendo? Their biggest appeal is that they had huge userbases with the DS and Wii; 3DS seems to carry on this tradition and Wii U could be succesful, too.

The only reason why they didn't release something for the Wii was because it was too underpowered and that's understandable since we talk about a company who wants to push things further.

I would love to see them on Wii U with their ideas, they are a cool company.

6 years is a long time, even if it seems like just yesterday.
Especially these days when the world moves so fast.

I always thought that the logo and name was quite clever. A lot of the games on display have included "asymmetrical multiplayer", where one player with the subscreen is chased by the others with Wiimotes.

In other words. It's Wii (we) vs U (you).
We have the wiimotes. You have the subscreen. That's why the U in the logo is in the shape of the subscreen.

It was a fascinating time period, one in which the gaming industry changed in a very big way. It's gonna be etched into our minds for a while.

So many iconic moments.. the name change, the Wiimote unveiling, the division of reactions among gamers/developers/media personalities/etc, the stampedes to the demo kiosks, Miyamoto as a conductor, saying goodbye to the little GameCube that served so well over the years..

It was an inflection point for gaming history. And here we are, hoping to see it happen again.

(I've actually gone back and listened to a lot of podcasts from 2006. It was like re-living those moments. So fascinating!)

As the hub appears to be only in the starting phase, I assume much more will be added soon, or perhaps Nintendo wants to have everything under wraps. Though that wouldn't explain why Capcom is listed under "Action > Nintendo Wii U". The Pole To Win America testing group is kinda interesting as well.

I like the logo.

But like mentioned above already, it's too Wii'ish. This consoles deservs an own identity like every hardware should.

The whole drama after E3 2011 wouldn't have been that crazy if the thing had any name other than "Wii U". And don't forget: there are still many people out there for who the Wii brand is synonymic for some kind of "weakness" (technical, and when it comes to third-party support).

Yeah, but even the casuals need a new colour in the logo at least to get excited :)

Thing is, they really have to rebrand the idea of a new Wii to reach the casuals, because masses of them already own the precursor, which they don't use much, and plenty of them have an ipad too...

But I'm patient towards E3. Just coz I hope Nintendo rewhoops the whole tabernacle

I got my nieces/nephews one of those LevelUp Wii towers. Pretty decent.

And Pole to Win.. an external localization agency? Why would Nintendo go outside for help with this? Unless they plan on doing more than they can handle internally.

They had better.
Poor Treehouse can't do it all.

Same here.. patient. The wait and the speculating are quite fun. And the bragging rights if one of us is dead-on makes it even more worthwhile.

And you're right regarding the casuals as well. Nintendo wants as little confusion as possible, and an entirely new branding with a huge rollout ad campaign would do the trick.

I still remember that day very well. I remember talking about it on those IGN blog things. I read it recently and it made me cringe. I miss 14 year old me :p

Making me feel damn old!
(I miss my skinny 28-year-old self!)

Is Dragon's Dogma made by Cap USA? If so then that's good confirmation that it'll hit the Wii U.

I think it's made by Capcom Japan - they put a lot of money, resources and most of their talented people into this production. It's pretty huge.

But anything from Capcom - maybe Dragon's Dogma - will get on Wii U very early. Nintendo and Capcom seem to have some kind of love relationship now :lol

Love it. Will buy.

Cacpcom on-board for WiiU CONFIRMED. And they have something to show at E3, no less!
Given the genre, I'm gonna say it... RE6, CONFIRMED.

Oh, so that's why I keep hearing about Kojima this morning.

He already started using excuses for not making a Wii U game...

Dude makes excuses for everything... not going multi-plat, not making a Nintendo title... meh, wrote him off along with Konami ages ago.

I'm seeing the Nintendo Juicy™ going for $2000+ on eBay..

Every time you call it that, I have the urge to punch you in the face. Sorry.

It sucks we don't have Matt from IGN anymore. :( I miss seeing him drop us hints about what to expect at E3.

I don't miss putting up with his bullshit, though, so it's a fair trade-off.
