Yea it's happened to a lot of people. It gets worse on Master Ninja too because they throw more enemies at you. It's borderline unplayable in some sections.

Lovely. Normally I'd hope for a patch that would fix the framerate issues....but with how terrible this game is I really don't think that I care lol.
The Free DLC is the only reason I think I'd touch this again.

I picked up the Collectors Edition today and I have to say it is a fucking sweet pack. Soundtrack, good art book, awesome statue/figurines - good quality compared to some of the shit I have got from pre-orders/CE's over the years.
I managed to blow through Day One on Hard mode tonight. Not sure what to say really. The combat is visceral and intense, but ultimately suffers due to some of the massive changes and dumbing down of certain elements. Having Ninpo and UT's as a 'fill the bar' one use technique makes the game feel incredibly formulaic only 30-60 minutes in. I'm pretty much drilling enemies effortlessly until the bar fills up, and then either using it to recover health or to take out some of the rocket soldiers who like to pin my shit down sometimes.
I barely took a hit against regular enemies bar some rocket shots, and the enemy varieties are decent I guess. However I don't really feel the need to mix up my strategy so far. I pretty much go for the quick-combo with teleport strikes on ground, and when I am against rockets/riot-shielders, I start using the auto-aim jump (wind run?) and flying swallowing enemies. I suppose this might be considered some form of strategy given that I can follow up the injured enemies with an OT for some invincibility frames - but ultimately there is no risk I have experienced so far, in leaving an injured enemy alone. So basically I injure a few - then kill everything else until I need some i-frames (which is rare so far).
Steel on bone is a decent mechanic I guess. Not sure it belongs in Ninja Gaiden given just how good NG1/NGB/NG2 were - but it doesn't really 'feel' like a QTE - just a way to finish your move. The biggest issue I have with it is the total randomness. I thought I had it down to a fine art against regular soldiers, with nearly every 'heavy' attack causing a Steel on Bone section and following that through to other nearby soldiers. However I'm noticing more and more (particularly against riot-shielders) that it's seemingly out of my hands when it will occur. So it's not feeling particularly strategic - just a novelty to make some moves seem more brutal.
Graphics and sound are definitely very good. The music isn't at all memorable so far, but the sound effects (on 5.1 mode) are really good. Visuals are good provided you don't stray - if you just follow the path COD style you'll never notice some of the awful textures/models littering the world (pots, benches etc). Overall I think it looks very good and certainly deserves more than whatever score IGN decided to award it for visuals.
I guess the best part of the game for me so far are the bosses. I have only fought two - the spider mech from the E3 demonstration, and the masked boss. I was surprised to find they both required some finesse and thought to complete. I died a few times to both and after observing some of their cues/attacks I was able to defeat both without taking a hit. The QTE's during the boss fights were decent too - mostly boiling down to mashing X or performing a quick dodge - but it was responsive and looked cool. The masked boss in particular gave me some Bayonetta-Jeanne flashbacks - with some really nice back and forth and awesome attacks. Definitely the highlight of the brief amount of time I have put into the game. I am interested to see if they can keep it up (despite the Gigantasaurus falling down boss).
All that said, the game is shit compared to the likes of NGB, NG2, DMC3/4 and Bayonetta. It basically boils down to two major issues. First of all - the input lag. It is there, it needs a patch or something - because it's a bit of a joke. Whenever shit gets hectic (and it gets hectic often) you can expect Ryu to start responding with a bit of lag - enough that it totally fucks with your dodge/combo/dodge routine. All of a sudden Ryu will throw an unwanted slash due to lag and you will get punished despite slamming the trigger to dodge/block. I find the best solution is to calm down the battle a bit and dodge into a safer area so you can more or less 'catch up' and reset some of the input lag.
Second, and this is definitely not getting fixed - there is zero reason to explore. No chests, no items, no ninpo, no essence, no upgrades or weapons, no achievement related data files or crystal skulls. There is not even a breakable piece of scenery the best I can tell. I am essentially fighting 3-5 (admittedly large) waves of enemies for a few minutes, then either performing a QTE or pressing the Right Stick to see which alley I have to walk towards, or which wall I am being forced to Kunai climb next. I wasn't expecting too much to be honest. I mean, NG2 is probably my favourite Ninja Gaiden and it was quite a bit more straight forward than NG1/NGB - but a game this linear and pointless feels nothing like what Ninja Gaiden should be.
I'll hold onto it and finish the game - I am interested in the co-op and trial modes. However I cannot see myself going for difficulties greater than hard because the combat feels so lifeless and there are simply too many enemies (I think I may have fought more enemies in Day One of NG3, than all of NG1 - no joke). I guess buyer beware - there are enough warning signs out there for anyone with some doubts - wait for the bargain bin.

NG2 fast combat wouldn't fit in Tairon's narrow spaces and besides, I love the different environments in each level.
Plus, no backtracking!

I plyed through the 1st 6 acolyte missions last night. They are a lot of fun, it is like they took the NGS2 missions are turned them up to 11. They throw a ton of enemies at you and you really need to work together to get through them. Ninpo is useless in the missions though, I hope that leveling up will unlock a different ninpo that will work better. I really hope that people stick with the coop and mp modes because they are both really fun.

Just finished the game on normal.
Not bad. Had some interesting bosses, I particularly enjoyed fighting
. The end-game boss was nothing spectacular, though. I don't see why devs think bigger is better. The Murai boss from NGS was awesome, for example. The
boss was a bit silly but it actually had quite a few interesting moments if you try to get underneath it and cut its legs. The only real boss complaint is fighting

I was super pissed about this when I played NG2 for the first time. It's great how it's all interconnected and it holds my attention on replays. I actually like NG3's "level design" better than NG2's because it cuts to the fights and saves me the hassle of running down corridors forever (if there isn't much to explore or no reward for it, then I just wanna be in fights the whole time instead of doing busywork.) but my idea of a perfect sequel to NG1 involves making a new open world area for Ryu to spend most of the game in again, with the golden scarabs back and actually good rewards for them again.
I hope they seek out fan advice for NG4 like they've done with DOA5...i will write them a goddamn bible about the foundation they laid with NGB, then ignored for the next several games. I can't say I'm quite as disappointed as most of you, but I do think they've fucked up pretty bad on this one and somehow went completely off the rails.
It's plain as day that they thought they could get more sales out of this by making it less hardcore and it seems like they've alienated a lot of people instead. If by some miracle this game sells better than NG1 and NG2, i will be so pissed...that would be the final nail in the coffin.
I limped on to about halfway through level 4. Still bored to tears, spamming the same moves.

I doubt it will. NG2 was pushed hard by Microsoft as a 360 exclusive, this one is multiplatform and reviews bashed the game. It'll be lucky to sell as much copies as the Sigmas.
First thing you see when you google ninja gaiden 3 is ign's 3/10 review score. Doesn't seem like many people even bought it on gaf.

I have a lot of fun with the change in pace in day 5, and overall and so far is the only day I enjoyed (up to day 7). The bosses are utter crap, there is no sense of strategy or challenge.

i said a COMPLETE run. that guy got up to ch.11. there aren't any other no hurt vids for the remaining chapters. maybe it could be done, but that would probably be more frustrating than Boshy.

Ah okay, I am sure this guy could get through all chapters while taking a nap but yeah chapter 11 master ninja may be beyond human possibility to do a no hurt (because of "that room"). Honestly if he could get through the previous chapters I really doubt that any chapter beyond 11 would phase him either.
Indeed. I was actually close to buying it, but thought I'd look for reviews. I pulled up google on my phone and found the IGN review at the top. I typically ignore their reviews, but this one was particularly bad and it really seemed to me that the reviewer was making good points (rather than simply shitting on the game ala Godhand). Of course, I didn't let that completely determine my decision, but I decided it would be better to at least research the game a bit more before giving it a shot.
After reading this thread, however, it's pretty clear that IGN was right on the money this time.
I'm at Day 4 on Hard, and "total lack of variety" sums up my thoughts exactly. It's a damn shame, but I don't think that I even want to finish this game when I still have NGB and NG2 difficulty levels to play.
I still have the corresponding CD's and art book (in Sigma 2's case) for these games but since the cardboard cases were so flimsy and shitty looking I threw them in a fire each time I bought a Sigma game. I'm sure I could still get something for either of these, after all I never opened the bonus discs, they are still shrink wrapped. It's just that the cardboard cases look like shit on my PS3 shelf (easy to damage when removing the game case from it, too) and I was pissed that the "collector's editions" were just regular editions with a cheap cardboard case, sleeve and bonus disc attached. Such bullshit.
And in NG3's case, the collector's edition is so bulky I'm probably just going to sell it and attempt to recoup most of my money. I never opened anything other than the game case, and even though I used the collector's edition DOA5 demo code I still got an unused preorder code. I'll rebuy the standard edition at $10 in a few years if I want to revisit the game. I'd rather replay the rest of the Ninja Gaiden series in the meantime, or play a few action games that have been sitting on my backlog for years.

Oh god you haven't finished all the NGB difficulty levels? Definitely a much higher priority than playing NG3. Easily the most thoroughly re hauled difficulties in 3D action games I can think of (except Master Ninja, which was pretty close to VH).

Me too, still get that way (since I am playing it again on Vita) first two games are great, not liking what I hear about this one though. I have the CE pre-ordered but have yet to decide to pick it up, I really don't want to miss out on the OST but I can't justify picking this up for just that. As a huge fan of the first two whats the general consensus, worth picking up? Worth paying $100 for?
I don't suppose it's worth $100, but the question of value can vary wildly from person to person, regardless of their opinion of the game. I'm currently of the mind that I'd rather have most of that money back for more enjoyable endeavors; I beat the game once on Normal and played hours of co-op MP and I feel I've squeezed out most everything I'm willing to receive from this game. For it's size it's not worth taking up shelf space, either.
It might be worth picking up the CE as a speculator's purchase, never opening it up, but that could very well blow up in your face as this is the worst entry in the series. Regardless of individual questions of overall value and worth the consensus is that NG3 is the worst entry in the series, more or less. That makes speculating on a game people probably won't want in the future more of a gamble. Again, do you have the space and money to buy this game and have it stuffed in a closet in hopes some collector will give you $200 for it when NG4 comes out? Rarity alone might not be enough given the amount of disdain this game is receiving.

I have a few questions, as I...for whatever reason, feel like playing this game. The first I have to ask is about difficulty; I think outside of maybe Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, III appears to be the easiest game in the series on normal difficulties. What I was curious about was this; is Hard mode unlocked at the start of the game? In the previous games, you had to beat the game on Normal...I'm worried Normal will be Ninja Dog mode.
Second, and this is more of a fan thing, but what's the current chronology of the series? I believe it went the 3D games, the NES games, then the DoA games, but didn't Dimensions retcon some things so now it's NES, 3D, then DoA?

Hard mode is available from the get go.
It takes place right after NG2 and before the NES games.
EDIT: I wasn't aware of the retcon - I could be mistaken then....

It's a shame. I should have been creaming my pants for Ninja Gaiden 3 at every step of the way, waiting anxiously for news of its development and release. Having it preordered for months on it, the works. Instead Ninja Gaiden 3 has come and gone and I could not give less of a shit about it. It's truly a shame to hear how far the series has fallen from the height of Ninja Gaiden Black.
I'm curious to know just how many of the employees that worked on NG3 also worked on the original with Itagaki. I was never really certain how much of NG Itagaki was really responsible for, but he definitely seems to have had pretty serious influence on the direction the game took.
Hayashi and crew really dropped the ball this time.

Even with the retcon, you're most likely still right because
the game has a cameo appearance of Robert from the second NES game, and it wouldn't be possible for him to appear if this game took place afterwards due to certain events.

This game is pretty much a testament to how important Itagaki and the guys who left with him are. Ehara especially is the genius behind the game's battle engine.

At this point I've invested so much time into the series across all the games that I feel obliged in a way. As a NG fan I would rather play it and be disappointed by it on my own terms.

Man, the encounter design gets old really quick. 90% of the game so far has just been room after room of waves of soldiers with waves of rocket dudes appearing in the corners.

Seriously. Let's all pray that this game bombs terribly.
Lets be honest here, much of the previous games were like that as well.
