Long-requested sequels that are monumentally disappointing

This might be a legitimate candidate for worst first impression, it seems that everyone's warming up to it and that it actually IS the real deal despite that initial shot being... well, Max looking like that.

Syndicate was great, the best thing EA has put out in a while. People who thought EA would make another RTT Syndicate game were monumentally delusional.

It didn't have to be RTT but it could at least have involved some tactics, like figuring out the best way to storm a building and get your mark, make a clean getaway, etc. Instead it's just a scripted rail shooter.

your favorite sequel

you, the person reading this post. your favorite sequel? it was terrible and awful.

it doesn't matter if it was long requested or monumentally disappointing, but it was bad.

While I don't know if a new Clive Barker FPS was "long requested" by a large number of people, I was hurting for a new game like Undying for years ; - ; And yes, I know your post probably wasn't directed at my choice in particular, I just needed one more post to hurl hatred at that damned game.

Funnily enough though, we got a game that (seemingly) took heavy inspiration from Undying when Bioshock 2 came out. Unfortunately, most people ended up writing that game off for no other reason other than it was a sequel to one of the most overrated releases of this gen.

Another vote for SSX here. Game is bland as fuck. Lifeless tracks, soulless characters, zero customisation beyond colour swaps and a drab soundtrack. Probably my biggest disappointment this gen.

Golden Sun Dark Dawn could have been saved by a far better writer, more difficulty and less recycling.

It wasn't a slap in the face by any means, but it was just sad that it took so long to make such a disappointing game.

Nights Journey Into Dreams is the perfect answer. I prayed for it for years, got it on day 1, popped it into the Wii, and about 15 minutes later I ejected it and could hear the sadtrombone.wav in my head.

Chrono Cross. Personally I loved it, but holy shit... the CT fanboy shit-storm over it was truly the stuff of legend.

Just a stiff, offensive rehash of the Genesis greats. It sucks, because it was at this time that the franchise started to pick up momentum with Colors and Generations, they had to fuck it up with this shit though.

On it's own it's not a terrible game, but it goes against so many Genesis ideals, calling it Sonic 4 is an insult.

Starfox Assault. 10 missions. Horrible on foot missions. No branching paths. Beat it though. but ew. Adventures was better(HERE IT COMES)

Resident Evil 5. Yep.

Sonic Unleashed. Starts off exciting. Then that 30 minute Werehog Ice level kicks in. Not to mention the Super Sonic Finale was horrible.

Wind Waker was a snooze fest.

Metroid Prime 2. Just didn't have the energy or charisma of the first one. Same for 3. Other M was terrible too.

Sonic 3D Blast- lol

Note that I've beaten all of these game sbecause I did enjoy them at purchase. But looking back in retrospect and they just weren't that were hyped up to be.

you people know nothing. NOTHING.

ladies and gentlemen, the king:

and I would also add Alien vs Predator 3 (2010), since Rebellion already made a better game than that in the past (1999). It was mind boggling that they added a melee system that ruined everything.

btw, does anyone know whether the lead designer for AvP 1 jumped to Monolith years later? Because AvP 1 guides the player using light(s), yet the sequel made by Monolith doesn't, but then FEAR does it like a master.

One of my favorite things about sunshine was that you weren't jumping on platforms that existed purely for the purpose of being jumped on; you were jumping around a place where people actually live and work, trying to get their lives back to normal. It felt like an actual adventure, whereas I think most of the other Mario games are just about getting to the finish for the hell of it. In Sunshine, everything you did had relevance to the plot. Nearly everything, anyway. It sure wasn't a disappointment in my eyes at all.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'd also like them to try voice acting again. I like it when Mario characters talk. I just don't want the voices to sound ridiculous like in Sunshine.

oh yeah, THE PLOT

GSC needed less redeeming than RSE will take to make a modern Pokemon game. If the final product resembles the originals, they have failed.

No. You're wrong, just in terms of pure facts. It's would take far less effort to get RSE to a hypothetical Gen V standard than it took to get GSC to Gen IV standards.

I could go on for HOURS about how much better RSE are than GSC, but I've done it so many times already...

Crysis 2.

Not that "long-requested", but I can't think of many sequels more dissapointing than that one. It isn't an awful game, just incredibly, incredibly mediocre compared to the first one. The fact some people try to say C2 isn't "that" linear and that C1 isn't "that" open and still "just wider linear paths" is pretty baffling. Crysis 1 is a game i can play 50 times, Crysis 2 is a game you play once and there's nothing else to experience but a series of scripted, hand-holding setpieces.

This, and the story makes no sense.

I suppose a follow on to this would be Jedi Knight III. 2 was a finely crafted story driven game, with a very likeable main character. III took that out and replaced it with a generic character and sucked out an intense experience for more player choice. It was the wrong move, resulting in a disjointed story and I felt that all the atmosphere from the IP just evaporated.

I've played Unreal 1 and 2. I dunno how you can consider it a disappointment when the first wasnt that great.

Dont confuse this as the sequel to Unreal Tournament 99.

Talking about this makes me want an Unreal Tournament 99 akin to the Quake 3 Browser game..

Heresy! Unreal was huge at the time and a driving force behind Voodoo card sales. The sequel was played up as equally huge in the years before it came out. Then it came out.

Now, I didn't think it was that bad at the time, but it sure as hell counts as the most disappointing long-requested sequel. (I also replayed it recently and dear god, that guy walks slooooooooooooow as fuck)

Not as long as Duke Nukem Forever of course, but that was development limbo and doesn't really count. DNF was clear conceptually complete in 2003 from the looks of it. DNF wasn't really a sequel to anything anymore.

Warcraft 3. Not a particularly bad game, but after the awesmoeness that was Warcraft 2, I was hoping for more. Wanted more RTS and less RPG, although a little RPG is OK I guess.

GoldenEye 007: Reloaded and Perfect Dark Zero come to mind. The original games basically defined the console FPS genre back in the N64 days. But the two new games are nothing special in the sea of modern FPSs.

Goldeneye's single player on Wii was the most fun I've had with an FPS in ages. It's a crime to put it in the same sentence as Perfect Dark Zero.

Why is Ruby/Sapphire looked down upon so much, anyway? Keep in mind that I ask that as someone who's played only Red/Blue and Explorers of Sky.

No day/night cycle and shitty Pokemon designs for me personally. Also coming from the amazing GSC with additional Kanto region was a bit of a disappointment. Afaik RSE and it's underlying mechanics gave the competitive scene a huge boost though but I never cared about that side.

They started anew. Fans who were expecting all three regions to be traversable, or for the plot (hardy har?) to be continued were let down. In addition, much of Hoenn is water and has to be surfed on to get to many key areas, which can be annoying. Other things from Gen 2 didn't carry over as well, like the day/night cycle.

In the end it was probably necessary but it still left a bitter taste in my mouth. I'm hoping the eventual remakes will let me appreciate Hoenn more.
