New Super Mario Bros 2 announced for 3DS - August 2012

Although I like Mario, well love Mario, I feel as though the series is getting a bit oversaturated. They're pushing out these Mario games every year ever since 2009 when NSMBWii came out. There's been a Mario since then. Galaxy 2 followed in 2010, then Mario 3D Land in 2011, and now NSMB2 in 2012.

There is a reason that I can't decide what I like better, NSMBWii or the Galaxy games.

One has production values up the ass but NSMB's design made me completely overlook the visuals.

Blech.

Not even the creatively bankrupt nostaglic use of Mario Bros 3 items will make that bland stuff look good. Between this and NSMBMii, I guess 2D Marios are just stuck being as uninspiring as can be.

Looking forward to the next 3D Mario though. Assuming it isn't drained of all life in hopes of making NSMB-like sales.

What I don't get is why does Zelda have to go through some tumultuous art style change nearly every console game, but Mario can't. It would go a long way to freshen things up.

It's a Mario game, it will be good, end of discussion.

I agree these screenshots look terrible and uninspiring to play

I'm dissapoint gaf.

But seriously, I had fun with NSMB DS. Too bad the replay value of the single player was really shitty.

BTW, I hope we see the multiplayer in too. I loved Mario vs Luigi in the DS game. And the minigames too.

I don't see what's so hard to believe.

It's not that he couldn't do art like that, it's that it's not a priority for some reason.

A lot of factors could come into play.

Honestly, I think it's because they're trying to protect "the brand" and its identity. With the exception of Paper Mario (and maybe M&L?), they've pretty much kept the art style of Mario pretty consistent across a generation or two.

I can't fathom this opinion. Every 3DS screen looks worse to me, both artistically and technically.

Softer, more subtle shading - look at the first level with the castle and the P-wing -- the colours mesh much nicer, on the Wii version everything stands out too boldly to me. On the desert screen the background is brighter, with varying depth, bricks are clean and sharp. On the ice world the colours have a nicer pop to them, characters and layers are crisp and colourful, no gaudy patterns or pastelly backgrounds. The Wii shot of the forest level looks better, but there's a lot more going on in that screen... you can tell from the 3DS screen that the ground textures are stump-like and that cross-sections of trees are probably a feature of that level (which is new) as is the webbing / climbing...

The way the layers have been done makes me really eager to see it in 3D. The snow level especially... I bet the depth and the environment effects (snow and flares) are going to look brilliant.

Galaxy's intros mean nothing, it's not even part of the real game.

It's flash and not substance.

What you posted isn't even an introductory level to the game like in most Mario games.

It does nothing for me, I don't even count it towards anything.

Then the parts past that? Are you trying to call those "bland" too? I don't care where you try to say Mario Galaxy starts, whether it's the Star Festival, or waking up on the planetoid IN SPACE, or Good Egg Galaxy, it was anything but bland.

Well, the other two NSMB games were ok, but I really don't think they even come close to any of the other Mario platformers. Hopefully this one's better, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Just make 3D Land 2, and I'll be happy.

I will say that my favorite two 'Mario ips" are Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi by far. 2d is probably my least favorite.

I'd be a bit disappointed if they don't introduce any brand new worlds. Get some inspiration from Galaxy 1/Galaxy 2 and 3D Land if anything.

No, Galaxy's real start looks really good as do the whole gameplay parts of each game.

I forget right now what I was initially replying to but I think I was getting at that the initial levels of Mario games are often boring introductory levels to get the mechanics down.

I think someone mentioned that the screenshot for the new 3DS game was the same world or environment of the past ones, it's obviously intentional.

They could change it up but the first worlds in every Mario game are probably going to be be lacking anything special.

Has an 89 on metacritic and an 8.6 user rating. How is that not good?

Those scores are about 2-3 points too high imo

The art style is extremely bland to the point of being uninspiring.
For such a talented guy, I'd expect a better take on the Mario "style". Something akin to 3D land or Mario Land 2 land that weren't really super stylized or out there but were still pleasant and charming.

I kind of agree too. Look at the main Mario games since 64 and he hasn't changed much within the mainline games. That includes all the 3D console games and the "New" series.

2012: The year where Luigi finally has a better game than his brother.

You've played every game from 2012? How can that be?

Are you serious? The game was bland. Hold yourself to higher standards.

Game was very enjoyable in my opinion. Was it as good as Mario1,2,3,World? No. Was it still fun? Yes. Was it a bad game? Absolutely not.

That could very well be it.

To go further, I think Nintendo is very afraid of presenting contrasting visual styles of Mario and fragmenting his image, out of fear it would confuse consumers. Since he is the flagship mascot, they have a vested interest in presenting one strong, singular version of Mario, than 20 different ones across 2D, 3D, sports, party, and racing games.

The RPGs are the exception.

The post you were replying to was discussing art style and presentation, not gameplay.

For the record, it doesn't just look similar, much of the graphical content is being directly lifted from New SMB Wii.

I guess people forgot that NSMB DS was made for the wider audience. Keeping it simple and clean is also what made the game so approachable to old fans and new ones. The game isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to seem. Isn't it also Nintendo's first 2.5D game for the DS? I repeat... the DS.
