New Super Mario Bros 2 announced for 3DS - August 2012

Disappointed to see the same NSMB look again. I was a defender of it back in the day, but anything gets more tired with repetition. Even original SMB only recycled its look for its direct same-system sequel. (EDIT: same-system next-year, even)

The raccoon tail is nice, though. I was confused about why they went with the tanooki focus for SM3DL. They weren't using the unique abilities of the tanooki, and as long as the tail is what's important the tail+overalls look is much more classic.

Better than Yoshi's Story though, you must admit.
I'm not even sure I'd a agree with that. YI:DS felt like a rom hack, with old sprites mixed with new ones that didn't match the style and horribly uneven difficulty. It had some good concepts (the different abilities of the various babies were cool), but it was inconsistent as hell. Yoshi's Story was dumbed down from Yoshi's Island to be sure, but at least it was cohesive.

You forgot we got Yoshi's Island DS, hm?

Never heard of it!

I'll hold my peace as i've said what needs to be said. I'll be buying it anyway but I'm under no illusions that this is a gonna be a bland experience but beggers can't be choosers.

A mario game should even be considered even flashesque.

NSMB is just a really lazy bland cash grab for Nintendo.

I'm just sad that after a decade of no 2D mario....we got this.

It's like SMW and Yoshi's ISland never existed. The best goddam mario games are forgotten and SM3 is just raped for shits and giggles to keep the hardcore happy.

i totally agree with your disappointment

Everything that's not the music. And maybe the graphics.

I don't recall issues with the controls or physics. I felt the level layout and design was creative, I also enjoyed the food and how you obtained items/powerups, while the bosses and level progression caused me to pour a lot of time into the game.

I have never really discussed Yoshi Story before, so i'd like to know some key things.

Peoples fascination with the Yoshis games really perplexes me. Even SMW2 was just 'ok' IMO. Id play SMW over YI a million times over. The gulf between them was massive. I guess YI just never clicked with me, but neither did Yoshis Story or DS.

FFS! This thread is fucking retarded!

Yoshi hate? really? The greatest Nintendo character ever and star of Yoshi's Island: Mario World 2, the 2nd best Mario game ever made? Really?

Enjoy NSMB2 suckers!

Yoshi says "suck it"

The worst in all that is that, i actually think.. that 3d mario are now more old school in their spirit than 2d ones. Maybe not NES oldschool but SNES oldchool...

NMB are meant to be "fan games" with extreme level design where every level seems to be a special hidden one, and random blank graphics that doesn't try to hide cheap one texture loop forest.

Mario Galaxy or 3D Mario land put the emphasis on magical and moody universe, trying to make you dream a little, hiding the backstage foundations, and especially, they have a progressive and soft level design (doesn't have to be easy but you get my point) which try to be fun before being challenging.

That's way more the Nintendo philosophy for me, even if i know NES mario were probably more like the NMB.

Are you saying Yoshi's Island isn't fantastic? GO BACK TO YOUR STUPID MOVIE ABOUT STABBINGS

Charming as YI is, I can't forgive its bullshit approach to content-unlocking secrets. The amount of tedious and obscure shit needed to 100% a level has to be a sick joke by the developers. Killed the game for me.

As for NSMB2, just fix the physics and I'm there. Online multiplayer would be fun too. My friends and I are having a blast in Trials Evolution trying to complete difficult levels together. Even though our experiences are separate, the realtime aspect of it with the ghosts makes it really compelling to us. I'd like to see something similar in Mario, maybe a race mode with realtime ghosts like in Trials. Straight-up coop and coin battles would be fun too. The more functionality, the better.

Even if I didn't enjoy Super Mario 3D Land as much as I had hoped for I will probably buy this game even if I will probably not like it. I just hope it is a massive improvement like the Wii game was.

You guys no serious, right?

Yoshi's Island is incredible and the 2nd best 2D Mario game. I'd say it's even better than Super Mario World.

Come at me.

They're sticking with the same shitastic art direction for a third game huh? If I still had a 3DS, I'd pass.

Hopefully they at least ratchet up the difficulty for everyone interested.

The problem is that the vast majority of Mario games have their own identity even the true Mario Bros 2 (secret levels) has.

NSMB is derivative and unoriginal.

Yoshi's Island was the 2nd most rewarding 100% I completed in any game after 96 levelling SMW.

The only aspect of the art style that I'm not a big fan of are the clouds.

When you're playing the game you start to forget about what the backgrounds look like because you're too focused on the action.

Same graphic style and themed worlds again? Come on! New Super Mario Bros Wii had a superb level design but its dull aesthetic made me not fully enjoy it as it seemed that I was playing just a NSMB mod...

Screw Mushroom Kingdom, Beanbean Kingdom deserves an opportunity!

The levels being so long did make multiple attempts at 100 scores a little tedious at times, but I really loved the cram-packed levels and scoring system. Easily obtained 10+ and 20+ star items helped a lot.

Choco Island
Pipe Maze

Those are the only two worlds from Mario Bros 3 and World that I can think of that NSMB hasn't covered. If you want not so typical world themes you need to look at the more offshoot games like Mario Bros 2 and the Mario Land games. Mario Land 2 especially.

you can do unique takes on generic world themes, like grass land, swamp land, etc. these seem to look EXACTLY like the world themes from nsmb/w.
