Marvel's The Avengers |OT| (Dir. Joss Whedon) [Spoilers unmarked]

So assuming that 2016 is when the sequel will hit, and that every three to seven months a new movie releases (though lately it's consistently every five months), what new characters do we think will be introduced before then? Here's the known dates for the confirmed upcoming stuff;

Iron Man 3 — May 3, 2013
Thor 2 — November 15, 2013
Captain America 2 — April 4, 2014

Given the relatively short window between each movie, we can assume that we won't be seeing any new characters introduced before CA2 in early 2014. But that leaves the question, what will they be pumping out afterwards? They have to have something ready within a maximum of nine months after CA2's release, spring or summer of 2015 at worst, but more realistically fall of 2014 (given the gap track record).

Apart from movies that introduce new characters (to be later included on the roster for Avengers 2), there are a bunch of possibilities for new movies with the same established characters.

-New Hulk movie starring Mark Ruffalo
-Standalone Hawkeye/Clint Barton movie
-Standalone Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff movie
-S.H.I.E.L.D/Nick Fury movie

Though of course, a SHIELD movie would probably cancel out the possibility of a Hawkeye/Widow getting their own thing, but who knows..

Besides those, here are the realistic possibilities for brand new characters to be introduced into the mix. I say realistic because there are actual current developments (more than talks), i.e. screenplays/scripts etc.

-Ant Man (+Wasp?)
-Black Panther
-Dr. Strange

Who knows what out of all of these would make it pre-Avengers 2, if anything. Maybe just a Ant-Man along with a new Hulk and SHIELD movie? Who knows. But the way I see it, apart from the sequels we already know about, there has to be (AT LEAST) two or three new MCU movies before Avengers 2 hits. Hard to tell how many (if any?) of those will be new characters, though.. but here are how the slots look in my mind;

? — Mid/Late 2014
? — Early/Mid 2015
? — Mid/Late 2015
Avengers 2 — 2016

I'd like to hear how you all think it'll go down before then.

The rumors of short-films (for everyone from Luke Cage to The Sentry) introduces a whole other aspect though, so who knows if that'll actually come to fruition or not.

I haven't seen Avengers yet, but the tesseract they talk about in both Thor and Captain America is the cosmic cube, isn't it? The object that's been in Marvel comics for decades?

Probably. I've never read the comics so I'd never heard about it until I saw the film (haven't seen Captain America and Thor yet) and it was just something minor I noticed. It never subtracted anything from the film, which was awesome.

If you don't want to watch a movie you've seen before in a marathon, leave the cinema and go do something else and come back later. Using a device with a lighted screen in a cinema is fucking annoying regardless of whether there is sound or not. That's what I think.

Haha, thanks for the responses guys. I think his thinking was that it's a marathon and that people treat marathons differently from regular movies and that it shouldn't be an issue because of that. I still think it's kind of a crappy thing to do.
Sure, people get loud and rowdy at movie screenings of certain cult movies, but that's because there has become a culture build around the movie to warrant that (most likely at specific parts of the movie).

Just saw it. Really enjoyed it. Found myself really liking what they did with Hawkeye. It was very subtle, but they made him a total badass.

Are they really planning to do this? If so, they'll run it into the ground in no time. Sheesh.

I guess it's called the Tesseract 'coz Cosmic Cube sounds super dumb

Yeah. Tesseract sounds way cooler than "cosmic cube". If the real name is "cosmic cube" then I have no problem whatsoever with it being a cube, it's just that when they called it a tesseract for the first time I was like "but that's not a tesseract... that's a cube" but didn't think about it much afterwards. Anyway, end of discussion (for me, at least)

I guess it helps that I didn't know what a tesseract was until I googled it 20 seconds ago.

Uhm, so is this movie not being shown in 2D at all? All the showings for Toronto on the 3rd are in 3D. What is up with that?

Does anyone know anything about this? Will they be bringing more 2D screenings later? Or am I doomed to watch it in 3D?

yeah sorry about that. Wasnt expecting a spoiler to be so needlessly posted and i figured the "spoilers" in the title would be enough. Including a temporary header for now.

There's been plenty of spoiler-tagged discussion here so i just wanted to move those who have already seen it there. Apologies.

That's true.
For some reason I didn't think of Thor's statement as not being aware beforehand of the suit being dead as a result of Starks' actions as just plainly confused (like the statement you make before you come to the realization of why) but they're one and the same really hey.

Yeah I'll gladly admit that I'm just talking shit from the idea smiggy put forward.

I mean
Stark had a lot on his mind but shouldn't a super intelligent guy have thought back to (probably the only time?) his suit has gotten a power boost from another source and in the chummy spirit they were all in got Thor to help him out? Obviously it was extremely time sensitive (but still not impossible to have Thor strike him on the way) and his mind would have been extremely weary too but I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility and it's a much more straightforward series of events where Iron Man isn't at the brink of being stuck on the other side of the portal. With so much shit going on it's probably hard to say it could have happened hey? It's such an insignificant thing it's not something worth going on about probably either.

Just something I was spitballing on. I don't have any ill feeling towards the way it went and am probably on my own in my way of thinking about it all.

I like how nothing happens of that earlier 'encounter'. It's too much of a trope. Thing is flagged in passing early on, is reused later in the movie for pivotal moment. Either they added it in just because it gave them a cool throwaway moment, or had half an eye on throwing a curve all to confuse people - this is Whedon after all.

Random comments with spoilers:

- The ensemble cast sure paid off. Dialogue was great (I worried about this when I knew about Whedon being both director and writer), but nevertheless I enjoyed all the situations that led to either comedic parts or epic sequences.
- The first third of the movie was a little slow and the photography was at times awkward, but from the Helicarrier crisis until the end of the movie there was great photography and pacing.
- The Galaga part is, IMO, one of the best pop reference from all the movie along with the Legolas comment.
- Stan Lee's cameo was lame. He should have been used in a better scene (like being one of the NY cops that doubts about Caps' leadership)
- Am I the only one who didn't know about Potts being on the movie? And somehow I expected Jane Foster having more participation if Potts was on the movie, too. (And by the way, Paltrow and RDJ's chemestry is amazing.)
- Smulders nailed the role as Maria Hill, but the character should have been used way more. I'd have swapped Fury for Hill when taking down the decoy plane with the rocket.

In any case, the movie was great. Definitely on par with Iron Man 1.

Now, for the Avengers 2, my inner fan would enjoy watching Luke Cage, Spiderwoman (since Spidey is not avalaible), and Ms. Marvel along with the cast.

Not sure what your looking at, but it's most certainly a cube.

I'm looking at the posts by other people saying the tesseract doesn't look like a tesseract. Where are you looking?

Wasn't Thor and Captain America released two months apart? Now it's more like 5 months (as you can see by the sequel release dates), which I don't find that bad. Two movies a year at opposite ends?

What are you trying to say exactly?
Are you forgetting the time in between release. Yes there will be two Marvel movies next year but the first one doesn't come out till literally a year from now. They only have 4 franchises to work from right now.

That's the charm of comics. Things have silly comic book names. I don't know why writers and directors seem so compelled to move away from that.

Re: Maria Hill

I thought she was underutilised. I also didn't like how she was looking startled all the time and not very bossy. I like my Maria being a super bitch on top of things and giving everyone a terrible time.

She looked amazing, though.

I honestly thought she would barely have a cameo. Was satisfied with how they used her.

Read the post I was quoting.

Exactly, glad they changed it. 1960s mang!

Definitely agree.
They showed her aggressive side a total of ONE time in the beginning with her back and forth with Fury. But even that was tame in comparison to her bitchiness in the comics.

Hopefully it gets elaborated on further, if not in the CA2 movie (probably not) than in the SHIELD movie. Hell, I expect Fury to bite the dust eventually, like in the comics, and by her hand. :lol

I think what this thread needs is alot more Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill Pictures :D

Seriously though i thought she looked HOT and was a perfect fit for Maria Hill , i hope in Avengers 2 or when ever we see her next she's more bossy and a bitch like in the comics.

Is this the first time a major studio blockbuster release has been distributed internationally before its US release? Because the word of mouth, together with the stellar reviews and news articles about the box-office figures seem to be creating even more hype for an already eagerly anticipated movie. It could blow away the predicted numbers for its opening weekend. It'll be interesting reading, that's for sure.

Anyway, I just saw it in Glasgow with a sold-out crowd. Loved it. The best time I've had at the cinema since Kick-Ass. Whedon was an absolutely brilliant choice to direct. It has the wit and warmth of his Astonishing X-Men run, with the epic-scale destruction of Mark Millar and Warren Ellis thrown into the mix. It's a pure sugar-rush of a movie, and any nitpicks (I have a few, mostly covered already in this thread) are easily forgotten with the fact that this exists, and that it really is this good.

As for the 3D, I thought it was actually pretty decent in the 2nd half of the movie. It really came into its own during the big action sequences, post-converted or not.

It's not even the first this year. Battleship.

No, it's part of a Hollywood trend now. The International market is becoming more important than the US market. Battleship is another example and as dumb as the trailers make that movie look, it surprised me how fun it was. I'd actually recommend folks check it out and I never thought I'd be saying that.

Also the Olympics and Euro 2012 mean that studios want to get their films out in Europe and other places asap.

Lest young men abandon the cinema for a month.

Bloody good point. The UK summer schedule is surprisingly barren of blockbusters. I was at the cinema a few weeks back on the same night as Chelsea vs Barcelona in the Champions League and it was dead. This was on the buy one get one free (Orange Wednesday) night too!

That's honestly what I love about comic books: the silver age of superheroes (ie. the 60's and 70's). It's kinda goofy, and everything has a silly name, but they revel in it.

It's partly why I love a lot of Grant Morrison's work, because he evokes that a lot in his comics.

I thought the cosmic cube was a fine name. I personally don't understand why they'd change it.

You know what, I don't even give a shit anymore. I'll watch it in 3D tomorrow.

Im afraid of skimming the thread for the answer because of spoilers but should I watch it in 2D or 3d when it comes out in the U.S.? Is the 3d worth it or would I be better off with 2D? Thanks.
