Spoilers about the Hulk:

But can he really transform voluntarily without a threat? Perhaps, but I thought his second transformation was simply due to the Hulk not letting Banner die from that incoming thing. But yeah, your description of his involuntary transformation is accurate and basically how I understood it as well.

The last scene in The Incredible Hulk suggests that he can. It shows Banner meditating and his heart rate monitor starts beeping, then his eyes go green and he starts to smile.

Maybe, maybe not. I think how well Banner can fully control the Hulk is left up in the air (and that makes the character more dangerous in any setting, and more fun) but the threat definitely did help. He basically put himself in the face of danger and brought the Hulk out. But I feel the nature of how he did that also has an impact of how much control he has over the creature or how "sane" the Hulk is post-transformation.

If Banner willingly goes along with letting the Hulk protect him, he is also able to control the Hulk enough such that it doesn't randomly attack friendly targets as well, and is able to protect people too. We saw this at the end of Incredible Hulk as well.

Can you type that line down here? I'm one of those that missed it.

I can't remember it word for word, but Loki asks Thor how much dark energy it took for Odin to bring Thor back to Earth, and he implied that it was probably a huge drain on Odin - ie: a desperate measure. Thor just bashed him in response. Later on, Thor also says that without the cube, they cannot return to Asgard, so it was a one way trip until he completed his mission.

Only watched Iron Man 1 + 2 but I'm still gonna watch Avengers in 4 hours with my brother. If I like it, I'm gonna buy Hulk, Thor and Cap'n 'merica.

Having not seen the film yet:

Iron Man (A-)
Thor (B+)
Iron Man 2 (B)
Hulk (C)
The Incredible Hulk (C-)
Captain America (D-)

It's funny how you can not seemingly find many people that liked BOTH Captain America and Thor, it's love/hate.

Captain America was better than DareDevil!

I like both Captain America and Thor. I also liked the Incredible Hulk movie. I don't get the hate for that movie. Actors were competent, story was ok, and it had neat tie-ins and Tim Roth was cool.

Either way, I think we can all agree that Hulk randomly punching Thor and smashing up Loki was awesome. :D

Yes, 2D. 3D is a conversion.

I can't argue with that. The 3D is just... there. The only upshot is you might be able to see the Spider-Man and Prometheus trailers in 3D.
That works for me. I can always live with paying less for two adult tickets. I swear only descent 3D flicks I've seen were MBV 3D and Dark of the Moon...well that 3D Harry Porters were good too. I do like 3D but having glasses and having to line up the 3D ones can be a pain.

Avengers is a 2 hour 30 minute long action packed movie filmed in 2D which looks amazing in digital with tons of perfectly framed action sequences with no shakey cam. Do you want to spend less and watch it the way it was meant to look like as it was filmed? Or do you want to pay more money for possible discomfort for a long runtime watching an upconvert?

The choice is yours! :D

To be clear, this should be seen in 2D, no?

probably, but bear in mind the choice of viewings in 3D will be higher, and possibly on larger/better quality screens.

and the post-conversion is supposed to be ok, so its not terrible to see it in 3D

Only saw it in 3D yet but I thought the conversion work was good. There's cool stuff happening in the fight scenes, shit pop ups and you feel the scale of the battlefield. It's obviously my opinion but for once post-production 3D wasn't shit.

Nope, and I won't be.

Not to derail the thread, but The Avengers has even more Whedon-esque dialogue. Why choose that over Cabin?

I tried seeing it...but I am in a smaller college town, it was only in theaters for like a week....Is it worth driving around 45 min. for?

You're talking to the guy that travels across the US to see movies, but yes. I think it would be. Some of the most fun I've had at a theater this year.

That's good to hear I guess. I'm not convinced it's worth paying the extra cost though. But I guess different viewers look for different experiences.

I guess I'll be in the minority on this one. I enjoyed myself, but was rarely invested in anything going on. It didn't have the layer of heart that Captain America had, which I was hoping Whedon would nail. There are some super entertaining moments, but I honestly did not feel any sort of stakes throughout, mostly due to the bland villain and his army. The first hour just feels like its going through the motions. We've already seen Nick Fury let these people know he is bringing them together, why the need to drag it out? Still, Whedon does inject lots of much-needed comedy and the pacing is spot-on. I just wish I cared about anything going on. Also, the 3D was OK but I took my glasses off during one of the dialogue scenes and enjoyed myself much more. Perhaps a 2D viewing will add more.

I agree. Didn't like the endless waves of faceless, weightless aliens as the main threat. Made it feel too videogame-y and even (though perhaps that's the NY backdrop) too Transformeresque. I'm also with you on the stakes. There's never a sense of real danger, not even when
Thor is plummeting to Earth
... though that is a highlight, as it is at least more interesting than the character-smashes-other-character-into-something-very-hard-that-breaks/crumbles-after-which-they-shake-it-off rut that the other action scenes get stuck in (another welcome exception is the
Black Widow/Hawkeye fight
).

Whatever genuine threat there is, is constantly undercut anyway by Iron Man's never-ending ironic, self-referential commentary (RDJ's shtick, charming as it was in the first Iron Man, has gotten old pretty fast for me); it also clashes with the dog-gone ernestness of Thor, Cap and, most tragic of all, Loki, who is played by Hiddleston as exactly the snarling, scenery-chewing force of evil he's meant to be. The character deserves better than to be married to such a thin, Bay-esque plot devoid of suspense or surprise.

Whedon does manage to give each character a couple of good moments (no small feat), especially Hulk who, ironically and paradoxically, still seems short-changed: he's too interesting to be forced to give up screentime to some of the characters, with Whedon visibly struggling to give, say, Iron Man anything new and interesting to do (his arc is basically a complete retread). And I'm not sure why I should be excited about the prospect of
a sequel featuring Thanos. If they can't come of with a particularly clever scheme for the mischievous Loki, why would this next villain's master plan be any more sophisticated than 'open another portal, have another generic alien army pour in'?

I also don't think I'll ever buy Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Certainly not his eyepatch.

It's no better than a C to me. Sorry be a hater.

It was either in english but in 3D or french dub 2D soooo I preferred original language for the first viewing.

Sounds exactly like I'd hoped for.

Wow that was really really enjoyable!

I've watched and loved all the others, so it was such a nice feeling already being invested in this stuff. Comic book movie done right IMO! The payoff was worth it.

So good!

I even understood the end bit despite the other people I was with not knowing. /ballergrin lol.

Stayed right to the end of the credits anyway just in case heh, wasn't anything else on our one.

Another bad review, not sure if it is up on rotten yet.
Why has "The Avengers" elicited such rabid, near-unanimous pre-release love from critics and audiences? I'm not sure, but consider this: At a recent preview screening, a short scene during the end credits elicited a roar of surprised hoots and hollers (including mine) from the audience. But later, talking to people in the lobby, I couldn't find anyone who knew what we had just seen in that teaser. Why did everyone get so excited and cheer then? Maybe it's because we love these characters so much, we're willing to embrace anything Whedon serves us, because he has obvious respect and affection for the material. Good intentions, though, aren't enough.
