RIP Mountains of Madness.

WHAAA!!!? Muren was going to supervise that? FUCK! I had gotten over the fact that that movie got canned, now I am mad again.

Names to know that the effects are in awesome hands: Dennis Muren, Douglas Trumbull, John Knoll, John Dykstra (well, the Spidey movies kind of hurt that name to a degree.)

And LOTR movies are even worse than Dollhouse.

You better be trolling. If not, it is Civil War!

The old King has retired, he doesn't make good movies anymore.

People can fault Cameron's writing all they want. His writing has taken a dive in quality over the last 15 years compared to his earlier works. But you cannot fault him for his technical and visual prowess. The man talks a lot of shit, but he backs it all up and winds up making almost everyone else look bad in the end. Especially when it comes to action.

I gave Avatar's script a lot of shit(because it's a lot of shit, quite frankly), but those action sequences? He's damn near unparalleled on the Hollywood scale, he's still got it.

Avatar's last 30 minutes are some of the most epic shit ever put on screen. Cameron's still got it, anyone who says different is a dunce.

This is some insane trolling.
Chris Nolan slept with Dead's mom. A few examples;
That's a lot of words to describe how Chris Nolan does action. Garbage film-making would have sufficed.
I can't think of anything that is better. Everything else is either limp dick action with poor directing (anything Nolan), shaky cam hell (bourne), CG vomit AND shaky cam (Bay), overuse of slow-mo (Snyder), anti-climactic and poorly choreographed and shot (almost anything marvel)
Christopher Nolan is to film as Tool is to music.

Self explanatory.
King Kong is better than Nolan's last two movies
Chris Nolan should get his convict brother to write his next movie

Its not as ridiculous as the statement I was responding to.

Nothing was set in stone, but it might have happened. He pretty much only gets involved with projects he finds personally interesting these days. And if he gets involved as early as he did for MoM, he'll likely be involved from a supe standpoint.

In other words, he only gets involved if he goes "Let's see what crazy shit I can blow people's minds with this time."

Like a boss.

Black Widow's complete turnaround as a character from Iron Man 2 re-solidifies my thoughts that Favreau had way more to do with IM2 sucking than people like to admit. So what if she got forced in cause of the Avengers? Do something good with her. She was excellent in this movie. Of course she had some fantastic scenes in this cause she was a main character, but seriously.

Also why are so many people in here butthurt and talking about Batman? Why can't both be good? Batman is what solidifies comics as great character dramas, whereas Avengers is the comic movie I always wanted from the first time I saw the Spiderman trailer.

As a random side note: I appreciate that it doesn't take the powers away in the climax like most superhero movies seem to do as a cliche fallback device to "prove they're still human".

I am hardly a Whedon fan, but at least he has made a decent movie in the late decade.

People that keep acting like Avatar is somehow awful are cynical, unfunny fucks.

When the movie came out it received nearly unanimous praise here, but of course after grossing nearly 3 billion dollars "haters" came out of everywhere.

I remember reading plenty of criticism. Maybe you were too busy being stuck in the OT echo chamber.

I disliked the script at release. My opinion hasn't changed. The tech is cool, but it's wrapped around a bad script.

Avatar was better than The Avengers.

And I'd hardly consider myself a huge fan of Avatar.

I disagree. Character development alone was leagues better in Avengers and he had to deal with and create chemistry between completely different characters molded by other directors.

Not true, there was plenty of criticism from the first week.

The reactions upon release were about 85/15~80/20 in favor of positive here, and in general the reception was ultra positive.

Pretending like the film was viewed back then like now by some is nothing more than revisionist history.

Its the exact same timeline as Titanic. Ultra positive reaction -> Billion -> Positive reaction -> 2nd Billion (or near 2nd for Titanic) -> Negative starts to pop up -> Near 3 Billion -> SHIT IS FUCKING WORTHLESS

The character development in Avengers is nothing to write home about.

Agreed, but Avatar's character development is still much worse. I can't even remember a character in that movie that wasn't some one-dimensional caricature. The tough general, the soldier that changes his mind, the happy natives, the scientist that just wants peace and so on. Terrible.

That sounds like hyperbole to me. It just as possible that repeat viewings or time also caused more people to change their mind. I think the least useful thoughts on a movie come right after it launches. Same with any medium. Hype and the positive or negative circlejerk that comes afterwards dont produce the most thoughtful...thoughts. People complained about Titanic while it was in theaters still as well. I myself came out of Titanic pretty positive (I thought it was very sad), then quickly turned negative after thinking about how shitty and shallow the characters were. Now I still dislike the characters but I appreciate the recreation and Cameron's passion for making the movie.

I, for some reason, cant extended that mid way compromise to Avatar though. And I was very negative on it from the start as well. Repeat views havent changed my mind.

Bingo.

Avengers is what u call the perfect storm movie

20% saying its the best comic book movie ever. combine that with 30% saying its one of the best comic book movies ever. combine that with the general public reaction of saying its a very good movie (but not saying its their favorite movie ever)...and you get WOM which is exceptional which translates it into $$$$ but doesnt make it the best marvel movie, let alone the best comic book movie let alone the best movie.

I would say in terms of superheroes movies

1. Spiderman 1/2
2. Iron Man
3. Superman 1
4. Avengers

in terms of comic books

1. TDK
2. Spiderman 1/2
3. Iron Man
4. Avengers
5. BB

In terms of overall movies

lol not even close
