What will be the next game to announce a wave based survival mode?

I just can't get enough of it! Horde mode, firefight, survival... Call it what you want but it's all gold, pure gaming gold!

Personally I love squatting in the same corner of a map for hours while enemies swarm me and my friends! It's exciting because you never know how long you're going to last and they just keep coming, until you die or get bored. It's genius game design since it can't be all that hard to program, should be in every game really.

So what's next? I'm hoping for Bioshock Infinite. Think about how amazing it would be squatting in a corner of such an interesting and creative world for hours, while crazy people/mutants/robots etc run at you from the other side of the map? You could use your combination of guns and plasmids (or whatever this game is supposed to have) to hold off as long as you can! Would be ever better and more fun that the campaign probably. Who wants to move through a series of interesting levels when you could just squat in a corner for hours? Not me!

TF2. For over a year people have been speculating about a new mode, and for the past few weeks there have been files that indicated new NPCs (robot enemies by the sound of the files). It could be a survival wave mode or something similar to a MOBA.

New Super Mario Bros , Four players crouching behind a warp pipe on the far right of the screen and then the goombas come trotting in from the left. As the stakes increase the players get fire flowers to help combat the wrath of hammer, boomerang and sledge brothers.
And then that pipe they've been hiding behind for the last hour spawns one of those fire spewing Piranha Plants, oh the hilarity! then Lakitu turns up to put the final nail in the coffin and over an hour was wasted.

The only one I ever liked was Gears of Wars 2. When ODST came out I realized I was already tired of that mode. Hope a new MP type catches on soon.

I hope this takes the place of every tacked on multiplayer just to appease idiotic execs since I think (hope) it doesn't take as much ressources as a proper multiplayer-mode.

Bioshock 2 did the tower-defence thing really well.

I guess if horde mode was forced into an arranged marriage with tower-defence their kid would be preetty cool.

Bowser's finally figured out a way to rid himself of that plump plumber: a poison mushroom. But not content to leave it to chance, he follows it up with an unending wave of goombas and koopa troopas. Now Mario, with lives slowly ticking down, has to chain together kills at a rate that outpaces his fatal malady. Can he survive long enough for Peach's P-Wing antidote to arrive in the mail? Only you can decide.

I do enjoy them, when they are well designed though. I'm thinking God of War Ascension might have a mode like this.

I loved playing Mercenaries in Resident Evil games so I can't wait to play 6.

Came to say this.

It's very obvious it that this game will have it.
Yeah, but Mercenaries is a very different beast than what the OP's referring to. The time limit keeps sessions short and the time extension locations keep you moving around. Horde modes would do well to crib from the way RE does it. The 'endless' approach most of them take is interesting for maybe one playthrough, but in subsequent playthroughs it's just a big tedious timesink.

I too really love survival modes.
It's just nice to get more pure gameplay from games, without all that scripting most of them have in their single player campaigns.
They do require a bit of effort from the developers to be good though, Army of Two 40th day had a real crappy one.

Such a shame that Max Payne 3 doesn't have a survival mode, with that great shooting it would've been awesome.
There is hope though, it's getting a coop mode as dlc, but you probably can't play it solo (hate it when they do that).

Of course when the mail arrives it's probably a new message saying the princess was kidnapped and dropped the antidote, makes for a nice excuse for more waves at least.

Most Horde modes are boring as hell, but I don't mind their current prevalence, because you never know which game the mode might just be perfect in. There are some really great ones, like Mercenaries in Resident Evil 4 or the arcade mode in Alan Wake's American Nightmare. I enjoyed those almost more than the actual campaigns in those games, both were tense, addictive and required much more than sitting in the corner holding down the fire button.

Not that I wouldn't love a survival mode in TF 2, as I would, but I doubt that will be the rumored new mode. Chiefly because Valve is big on making every class useful for every mode and in that scenario I imagine the scout would largely become useless since he isn't a heavy damage dealer (like an engineer, soldier or heavy) and doesn't have very much health. Maybe they could do something on the robots side to make him more useful (like make them turn slower than he can strafe, so that skilled scout users can avoid taking damage during firefights with the robots).

A interesting idea though, and I would absolutely love it.

OP writes a sarcastic filled post showing how much contempt he has for horde.....

...everyone posts they agree and love the horde mode.

Is everyone in here being sarcastic?

Whatever the first game is that has an E3 stage demo probably. It's the new cheap and easy and lazy way to slap co-op into a game, which is fine with me if it keeps co-op out of single player and if single player still gets the bulk of the attention. People who demand co-op don't usually want depth anyway, they just want to shoot shit with a friend. So give them their shallow mode and let me have a meaty SP game.

Wave based multiplayer Mario? Reminds me of some game...what was it called? Oh yeah...Mario Brothers?

I thought we all got the sarcasm in the OP and the thread turned into honest predictions as to which games will feature this tacked-on mode (which, yes, sucks btw) next.
