Nintendo using some of the oldest marketing/advertising gimmicks in the book.

We had confirmation of such developers, let alone the first party working on games for it? Come on now, that's a ridiculous assertion.

Nintendo supports their own consoles, and their franchises sell consoles, unlike most of Sony's first party offerings. The 3rd party support at launch is not bad either.
I'm only talking about the similarities that the fate of WiiU and Vita is set because of this year's E3. I disagree with both of these things, i think that both the WiiU and the Vita will have game support in the long run.

It might seem rude, but I wish that in the future, they would restrain their presenters to either 1) Their own guys or 2) Third party execs who are native English speakers.

Yeah, but their own guy from NOA who discussed NSMB 2, Paper Mario, LM 2, ect could barely speak. "In NSMB2...you will see that Mario...really IS Golden....and as you can see...."

Maybe the guy was nervous, but that was some terrible public speaking for what amounts to some simple product descriptions. It's like...

I can't in my right mind understand how anyone can rank Nintendo any higher than 4th compared to Ubi, EA, SOny, MSFT.

All that hype, you have to account for that. All that and we got what we got. It makes this presentation today even more sour. Let's get real for a minute here. I know there are some die hard fans but come on.

It's like big players not coming up big in the playoffs. All the buildup and hype and nothing but bricks when it matters most.

To that end

Sony 6/10 - I expected more

Ubi 8/10 - Watch Dogs was enough for me to rank them

Nintendo 3/10 - All that buildup for what? Same thing that the Wii was but now in HD.

MSFT 4/10 - Good show outside of all the garbage Kinect and non game stuff.

Denial my friend. Denial.

Ughhhh such a lame conference. I wanted Zelda and Smash Bros. Even a tiny teaser of Smash Bros. would have sufficed. No Majora's Mask 3DS, no Pokemon U, no WiiU Zelda, and no Metroid.

Nintendo hasn't convinced me to buy a WiiU at all yet, which is what I think they should have done at their conference. They needed some kind of cool surprise. Instead we got games that are already out and games that are coming out on PS3/360.

Hopefully their 3DS conference tomorrow has something interesting.

Another issue I had with Nintendo's conference is that nothing seemed like a new console generation to me. I'm not talking about graphics here I'm talking about features and announcements. Where were the cool hardware features that would get people excited to try them out for the first time? And where were the big, shocking, game announcements?

It just seemed like an extension of the wii. Not something brand new and exciting.

Zombiu sounds extremely interesting. If/When I get a WiiU, I'll probably pick this up. They're doing a couple of interesting things. Unfortunatly, the game doesn't look near as good as the demo they showed during the conference. Makes me sad. It looked so cinematic, and now it looks incredibly glitchy. You can tell its in a rough state, and that graphics look no better than Left4Dead.

This. Definitely this. At some point e3 became about DAH MEGATONZ. People want "betrayals" like FF XIII for the 360 and Peter Moore coming out with GTA tattooed on his arm. They want that level of drama. In this age of constant leaks (planned and unplanned) and the rapid-fire gaming news delivery that is GAF, there is just no way that those types of dramatic moments can still happen. E3 is really just a trade show now, for better or for worse.

Uh, did anyone know about Nintendoland? Or Tanks Tanks Tanks? Or Sing? There clearly is not a problem in having surprise announcements. The element of drama which was lacking was significance. Nintendo has tons of stuff under wraps. They could have lifted up the curtain, just a little. That's why this conference is a fail.

Then why even say anything?

NINTENDO IS GONNA HAVE AN AWESOME E3 GUYS!*

*as long as they actually show the things in development which I have no idea whether they actually will or not

BUT IT'LL BE AWESOME! GUARANTEED!**

**no claim is made that it'll actually be awesome

Way to twist my words that you quoted. There's no point in even having this discussion if you're going to do that.

Nintendo > Sony >>> MS

But honestly, it's like ranking the Star Wars prequels.

Rofl, hit it right on the head.

Quick question: Did they show the rumored bigger 3DS? Couldn't bring myself to watch the entire show on youtube so I might have missed it.

I'll refrain from commenting on 3DS stuff until the conference tomorrow

Pikmin 3
- Looks great, I love the contrast between the photorealistic type vegetation and the cartoony items in it.
- Like that it has variable control schemes

Wii U Philosophy / Controller
- Wasted time

New Super Mario Bros U
- Liked the different art styles
- Compositionally music sounds interesting
- Samples remain very muzak-like.
- Liked the Yoshi and bigger enemy mechanics
- Really, still two generic toads?
- I don't buy the Social / Miiverse elements as adding anything

Batman Arkham City Armored Edition
- New features are token crap

Scribblenauts Unlimited
- Looks great, very clean, and I like that they expanded it from the scope of the originals.

Wii U Sizzle Reel
- In general I feel like it shows that Nintendo is going to get some multiplatform efforts, but not all of them. It's telling that this is a list of a few of this year's biggest multiplatform titles.
- Tank! Tank! Tank looked bizarre and hopefully a $5 downloadable title.

Wii Fit U
- I like that they're integrating a pedometer, very useful
- Game itself didn't seem a huge improvement. I vastly prefer the cardio based approaches showcased in EA Sports Active and Kinect Fitness to the balance/stretching/yoga approach in the prior Wii Fit games.

SiNG
- Looked entertaining, actually. Definitely a different spin on singing games, and a very clean presentation.

Lego City Undercover
- Skewing even lower than I thought
- Looks nice, although the sense of scale is smaller than I'd hoped
- This along with Lego Batman 2 bode well for the Lego games at least mixing it up a bit.

Just Dance 4
- Shitty franchise, shitty Wii U exclusive features

ZombiU
- I thought this looked great, suitably dark and horror-focused
- The tagline being about survival is great
- The sniper segment made me think "SILENT SCOPE OMG OMG FINALLY POSSIBLE ON HOME CONSOLE"
- The door hacking was lame
- It seems very early

Ubisoft Sizzle Roll
- Same as last night's

NintendoLand
- More Wii Play than Wii Sports
- Despite the theme park theme, it doesn't look like a theme park
- The central hub was very busy and didn't take advantage of the stuff I would expect it to--I was expecting something more like Banjo or Viva Pinata
- I don't think the explanation of the concept really did it justice.

Luigi's Ghost Mansion
- Seemed like a nifty distraction, but how well does it play with anything before 4 players?

Overall, and again not taking into account any 3DS stuff since they're going to do separately or the Platinum Games project or anything else outside the press conference, this was a 6.5/10.

They announced a few neat games, but I don't think they really hammered home the case on the Wii U and the overall presentation was pretty rickety with lots of awkward speaking.

My previous reviews:
Sony 7/10
Ubisoft 9/10
MS 4/10
EA 4/10

Nintendo > Sony >>> MS

But honestly, it's like ranking the Star Wars prequels.

I dunno how big a Star Wars fan you are but where's the Episode 3 love? I rank Ep 3 right behind Empire Strikes Back, don't drag the second best SW movie of all time into this debacle, Clayton. (Pearl voice)

It's apparent that Nintendo doesn't have any game that would instantly convey the entire concept of the Wii U like Wii Sports instantly sold the Wii. They essentially have a controller idea chasing after a truly interesting game. Their mistake, I think, is their attempt to sell the Wii U like they did the Wii. The Wii U looks like a more traditional game machine with an interesting controller that will add a new social dimension to the games. But they tried to sell it as if it would change gaming, even though there wasn't anything revolutionary there.

The sad thing is the actual games weren't that bad. If they had simply shown a 3D Mario demo and Retro's new game, the conference would've been looked upon much more highly. Instead, Nintendo spent most of their time trying to convince everyone that the console is much more innovative than it really is.

In fairness, this IS a system launch. These things historically never come out of the gate strong. About the only exception was the Wii and maybe the N64 (solely on the strength of Mario 64).

Not to defend the dull conference, but let's all have some perspective here.

I wouldn't expect much better for Sony and MS's launches either, honestly.

Right, but the thing is even with a dull launch you should back it up with promises and teases of things to come.

Even with the mess the 3DS launch and software follow-up turned out to be, Nintendo still showed off the idea of lots of games and support. Game logos for franchises that aren't on portable platforms. Developers pledging support. Hell, they even had a bunch of characters and scenes from Nintendo franchises and games rendered on the system's hardware to show what it can do (these came to us as the puzzle swap picture things).

A lot of those games got cancelled, or never appeared at all. And some of those developers produced nothing of value. But the idea of support was there. Momentum.

Last year Nintendo showed off a tech demo for Zelda Wii U. No game, just tech, to show visual capabilities. This year they don't even have a sizzle reel showing their franchises in HD. Absolutely nothing to show of their IPs, and the future of Nintendo franchises, except Pikmin 3 (which will be great), and New Super Mario Bros. Wii U. A side scrolling Mario game.

Cue casual software, a karaoke game, the bafflingly and poorly presented Nintendo Land, and a bunch of old third party ports.

For me, someone who games on PC, there's no momentum. No momentum of third party support or games that might interest me, and by that I mean software I haven't seen or played before (Rayman is the only except). And from Nintendo themselves? Just as little. No tease, no promises, no gossip about any of Nintendo's future software. No tech demos. No conceptual footage. Pikmin and Mario.

They basically gave me no reason to rush out and buy a Wii. They gave me reason to wait. That's kinda shitty.

I'm just amazed at how completely and utterly - they have decimated not only my hype, my immediate interest, and positive expectation -- but that of everyone else here.

It's like they watched Sony and Microsoft the day before and stopped working on it - "hmm, this shit'll do. Prep the banana-holding video!"

They are LAUNCHING A CONSOLE. They have to convince us to shell out $250-299+ for this thing. It should be a forward look to drive excitement and interest in the console... I hate to say it but even target renders of games that aren't yet complete would have been a good idea. You can bet your asshole that Sony and Microsoft will employ some next year.

this is how they used to do it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zr0Nu24OCU

I don't think Nintendo realise they've got 12 months to get core gamers away from buying a PS4 or 720 by default.

Really poor showing and it's obvious they're catering purely to current Wii owners with the U.

I think the real reason is that Nintendo has realized that the big E3 press conference is good for showing general journalists and writers the casual stuff that the system offers, as it will reach a very huge audience. they know that gamers are savvy enough to keep up with release news online and in commercials. We dont require a conference to learn about what a system has. Thats really what it comes down to. We know the games will come, as nintendo always seems to deliver at some point. It will just not be at E3 much anymore. I think people need to come to terms with this reality. Even Sony and MS seem to realize this is the future of E3 as an event. The publishers only have games to discuss, so they can focus on a handful of things that make their conference seem much more exciting to the hardcore.
This is why the knee-jerk reactions to all these conferences have to stop. None of these companies revealed everything they have on the table.

Nintendo > Sony >>> MS

But honestly, it's like ranking the Star Wars prequels.

Yeah - not quite. Nintendo gets extra points deducted for wasting their hardware reveal for the second year in a row. The fact that MS/Sony held their own against a hardware reveal with their poor showings sends Nintendo, by default, to last place.

I kindly ask that the moderators reopen the WUST thread.

I put this in the grading thread.

I don't recall the Wii getting the big 3rd party multiplats. (btw we know EA is on board from last year (Especially given the support for 2 gamepads at once), they chose to put UBI front and center this time around)

The only thing really lacking were some big first party nintendo games other than NSMB and Pikmin, but would that really be "different" from the Wii? The Wii had those games.

wth were you expecting to differentiate it from the Wii other than HD, and 3rd party support, both of which were actually shown.

Nintendo cut it's own content in half by devoting a show to the 3DS tomorrow, and they decided to only focus on launch software for the conference proper, bad move, surely, but GAF should be smarter than to whine like petulent children framing all of their hopes and dreams moment to moment on a press event.

3DS had a rough launch, but compare this to how Nintendo unveiled the 3DS.

They made the 3DS seem like something truly special and got most hyped up for it. They also gave that big list of games that third parties had in development.

Wii U feels like them not even bothering to half-ass it in comparison.

That was the worst fucking conference i've seen in my life. I've been watching E3 for 12 years and nothing even comes close to the piece of shit that was this conference. That's it, I'm done. I'm selling all my Nintendo games and consoles tomorrow. You just lost a fan, and not just any fan, a big one.

Reggie should commit sudoku over this.

Oh, he forgot to use your personal and arbitrary merit system. Whoops!

So every first-party game shown at the conference is a launch window game, something that hasn't happened in...ever? Really weird decision. Makes me wonder if (aka hope) they're planning to show off 2013/14 games later at the show.

Nailed it and parts in bolded are EXACTLY what I was saying earlier. So Retro's game is still early? WHO CARES!!! SHOW SOMETHING FROM IT!!! Just a few seconds!!! We won't be scared and pee our pants if we know it's in-development footage as long as it's gussied up a bit.

Ok so on reflection, it really wasn't that bad. They just focused on the wrong things, am I overly surprised we didn't get Zelda, Metroid etc? No, not when we when Pikmin 3 and a new 2D Mario were coming.

Am I also surprised we're getting 3rd party ports of existing titles? Nope.

As is the case with all Nintendo conferences It was just over-hyped, the 3DS stuff looked really good so hopefully the conference tomorrow with deliver!

Edit: I think if they had teased the games we all know will come (SSB, Zelda, Metroid etc etc) if would have solves a lot of the problems.

I agree. The 3ds reveal was great. It truly was a next gen product and the excitement was there. The wii u feels like an extension of the wii but now with 3rd party ports of hd games.
