Wii U Pro Controller announced - X360pad design, no screen, "for multiplatform games"

I'm guessing the triggers don't have much depth to them. But hey, it'll probably make GC VC titles easier to release properly!

Now that I think about it actually: I've been thinking a VC resurgence was possible with a new platform rejuvenating interest, but could it be we may see Wii U exclusives? I don't expect this for the 8-bit or 16-bit platforms except maybe some CD games and maybe Super FX, but there's quite a few N64 games that never popped up, namely third party ones, and I believe N64 emulation was more likely to be problematic. With the Wii U that may not be an issue anymore and they could hopefully get more reliably ported over and released. It'd also be pretty nice to see if M2 can get Saturn games on there, I'd love to get NiGHTS again, and stuff like Panzer Dragoon Saga is long overdue for a re-release.

Why would Nintendo make a controller with the intention to be on parity with the other consoles and not put analog triggers?
It's like they always find some way to screw themselves... i guess that we would have to use the gamepad as a steering wheel, which also lacks analog triggers.

on a positive note, the sticks being at the same level makes sense to me, you have your thumbs comfortably resting on the sticks for FPS, twin stick shooters or any 3d game, and the D-pad and face buttons at the same level for 2d games or fighters...

But it has that plunger like look vs. Wiimote's B being a typical button.

What are you talking about.

The Wiimote B button is clearly trigger shaped and hinged. I wouldn't call that a typical button.

Gonna get me one as soon as possible. I would guess that this version of the pad won't be availible for a long time.
slightly redesigned version after a slap on the fingers by MS laywers

I was talking about something like the triggers resembling PS3 triggers in that it has that "plunger"-like feel.

But eh, we don't know yet until we ask.

They've got a fairly long travel for digital buttons, but so did the gb micro shoulders I mentioned.

Hmm I see.

Sorry if this has already been posted, but there are now some pictures of the Wii U Pro Controller over on engadget along with some hands on info:-

This picture of the rear of the Wii U Pro Controller confirms it uses a Mini-B USB port for charging:-

and this picture of the rear of the Wii U GamePad confirms it uses the DSi/3DS adaptor for charging:-

Which I guess means Nintendo will be bundling DSi/3DS chargers with the Wii U?

What I dont understand is why Nintendo hasn't used Micro-B USB ports for both? Micro USB is rated for a much higher number of insertions than Mini USB, and it is also becoming the 'de facto' charging standard for mobile phones:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Mobile_device_charger_standards
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Mini_and_Micro_connectors
So it would make sense to use Micro-B USB port, since so many people will have compatible chargers already.

The only reason I can come up with is that the Wii U GamePad requires a higher charging current than can be supplied by standard USB:-
Standard USB Port = 5V 500mA
DSi/3DS Charger = 4.6V 900mA

However, the Micro USB charging specification allows for higher currents when using a dedicated charging port which shorts the two data lines:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Charging_ports_and_accessory_charging_adapters
So you could easily have 5V 1.5A, as many mobile phone chargers provide. This would have meant you could charge the Wii U GamePad from most mobile phone chargers. It could also be charged from a standard USB port, but it would just take much longer to charge.

So why didnt Nintendo just bundle a Micro USB charger with the Wii U instead? I would imagine there would be a decent price reduction on Micro USB ports/charging IC's/chargers due to the massive production volume, so it doesnt make sense to stick with their own custom DSi/3DS charger :/

Some other things we still dont know:-

- Does the Wii U Pro Controller support rumble? The hands on report said there was no rumble, but that could just be because the game wasnt programmed to support it yet.

- Does the Wii U Pro Controller support the same motion controls as the Wii U GamePad? (Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Magnetometer)

- Are the triggers analog or digital? Still doesnt seem to be clear one way or another. They dont appear to have the range of motion needed for conventional triggers, but they could still be 'pressure sensitive' like the buttons on the DualShock.

Suddenly it looks like the L and R buttons might be analog instead of the zL and zR triggers.
Would make sense considering the L- and R-buttons on the Wii Classic Controller (not CCPro) were analog as well, while zL and zR were not.

All four shoulder buttons on the uPad seem digital though...

Hmyeah, in this light the travel distance of the triggers on the gamepad definitely seems to short to facilitate analogness.. While they could be analog on the pro controller (but that distinction wouldn't make sense)

Wow, that's the sexiest looking controller I've ever laid eyes on. Even if I won't get a Wii U at launch I'll just get the controller to use on PC...

Wider form makes it look more like next gen Saturn pad. Shame they didn't put 6 face buttons on that and the Upad.

Or that guy's camera lens is weird.

These controllers are all a big step backwards from the Wavebird form factor. All Nintendo had to do was take the Wavebird; improve the placement of Z-buttons, make the C-stick & the D-Pad full sized and add buttons to the sticks. That would make the best controller ever known to mankind.

The last Pro Controller looked like a Playstation controller (or modified SNES). The new one looks alot like the Xbox360 pad. I really don't think Miyamoto would approve of this controller at all. It's clearly uninspired and clearly ripping off the 360.

No rumble worries me. I bet it won't have rumble just like the older CC Pro :(
Unless this controller is really cheap/long lasting I'd be baffled, everyone else has been slapping it in and this doesn't even have the excuse of needing to be tethered and mainly for rumble-less games anyway. Not that I'd really mind that much, usually I only ever notice if it goes on for long periods, I'm NOT holding it and it's vibrating on the table/floor, or it's pointed out like now.

I hope it doesn't need to be wired to the Wii mote like the last one.
Look at the link earlier: lights for which player, sync buttons, battery compartment behind a screwed on lid (something Sony should've done in the first place). If this had to be tethered it'd be the most bizarre and nonsensical thing ever.

Wavebird face button layout would be no good for 3rd party ports.

It's pretty funny how somehow the pro controller is both ripping off the 360 controller while at the same time having the right analog stick in the "wrong" position.. (making it different from the 360 controller).

I'm sorry to ask this, but I checked the first page and this one;

Are there any impressions of someone using the new WiiU Gamepad (the one without the screen), is it comfortable?

I want the form factor of the wavebird with the addition of trigger buttons behind the prongs and a rearrangement of the four face buttons to be like the SNES pad. Keep the yellow analog in its original position as well.

One thing I liked about the GameCube controller and the CC Pro better than the Xbox pad is the fact that the wings/sides are more parallel. I can comfortably grip them between my palms with pretty much just skin friction. My fingers curl around back but they're basically relaxed. On the Xbox pad, I feel like I need to grip the wings with my ring fingers for the same stability.

I really want to hold the new controller but I feel that way about most new game pads so that's not too surprising.

Changing the position of the stick is pretty much the only improvement. But it was probably done to make it somewhat distinguishable from the Xbox controller. It's un-Nintendo like to blatantly copy, even the shape and position of the home, start, select buttons are dead on.

Personally I love the Wavebird button layout.

That doesn't seem terribly significant. It's the same layout that the Wii remote, Classic Controller, and Classic Controller Pro have been using for years.

You mean like this mockup, but without the gap between the D-Pad and C-stick? (Like the WaveBird):-
