Final Fantasy real time tech demo - Luminous Studio [Up3: Survey/Screens/Video]

No, it's a survey on the video and the guy's using it as a spring board for bitching about modern FF. And it annoys me how often they want action systems rather than allowing to be the AAA turn based JRPG, it's not as if higher end turn based RPGs are all over the place these days.

Doesn't matter, there's still an area where you can leave a suggestion. I certainly told them what they should do and that's release Type-0 & Versus XIII here in the West as it's been 7 years.

Anyone else looking for info the game etc should fill out the survey... here's the link.

I think it's bad enough to use it as a general "This is how I want FF to be" suggestion box when it should be at least how it LOOKS to be going based on that video, but it's even worse to focus on "bring those two out here". Comments like that are going to change literally nothing, it's the equivalent of kids seriously asking "are we there yet?" as SE will be releasing those one way or another. Hell, Versus XIII's big problem is getting the damn thing done, localization would probably done alongside the final steps anyway to ensure a close global release. As for Type-0, I think waiting on the 3DS press conference is best at the very least.

Whatever this is running on in a PC, a similar level of performance would be possible with lesser hardware in a console simply because of OS and API differences. Well, according to certain devs anyway. Don't ask me by what degree 'less' it would be possible :)

Layer on top optimisation and software improvement over time etc. and things get more complex still in terms of 'what will be possible', ultimately, out of next-gen console hardware that won't match the highest end PC chips.

I think part of my optimism for mid-high cards comes from the fact that the system with 2005 mid range computer hardware still does what high end computer stuff does today, just at 720p/30fps and a few less minor features. I mean Crysis 2 and Witcher 2 isn't that much worse on the 360. There has to be some sort of console related voodoo going on there, either with optimization being great or PC engines being held down by it.

That's what the above areas were for... I was honest with that part. Ah well, to each their own.

Why would you say that? Do we have to add "STAGED REAL TIME" to every demo thread that isn't running on the targeted hardware? Are we going to have to append "STAGED REAL TIME ON 360" for demos for games that are multiplatform?

It's real-time on a high-end PC. That doesn't mean it's staged.

As I already explained, moving/changing assets, colors and camera angles in MAYA it's showing how a game is developed,
it's messing with the source code of an application/game in a stage that's not possibile to have for customers.
The most similar reality to this in the market is LittleBigPlanet and such sandbox software.

Quantic Dream and Epic and many others do realtime with viable hardware, and were you're messing with a compiled code of the game,
which has been first designed on Maya and the ported into the engine (Unreal,Frostbyte) to be compiled make it work as an executable
with some controls during the playback (something that this Tech Demo wasn't, when they changed assets and such they were inside Maya)

Softwares like Maya,Zbrush etc. differs greatly from something like the Unreal Engine, even with the modded tools like Square Enix have
for my level of knowledge in game development, but I could be wrong eh.

Will wait for DF on this, it will be a great article.
And pardon me if my english (not my first language) sounds rough, I've tried my best to explain it.

As a former die hard fan of FF, this was completely legit.
Seeing the potion in a "realistic" way and the world design.
Finally someone at that company gets what FF should be.

I liked the visuals and setting of the trailer, so I responded positively on the survey. But even if they started working on a game based on this concept I have no real confidence that they wouldn't screw it up somehow.

This. The point of the suggestion box was to give any additional thoughts about the video, not for childish clamoring for a game that probably doesn't even exist. Come the fuck on.

Sweet! Versus should be out soon now!

If only others had thought to tell them to hurry up with that project.

They wanted your opinion on the video.

That's what the above areas were for... I was honest with that part. Ah well, to each their own.
And you can give them more information by saying something and not simply scoring crap, sort of like why reading a review's more important than just looking at the number.

Er...that was posted by me. I know the difference between Kratos and Agent 47 ;) but both figures were made by our product team and the image of Kratos is just a preview image to the article that features multiple figures at display at E3 including Hitman, Tomb Raider, Batman etc....so nothing to see here, except FIGURES! You can see more images on our Flickr account.

Speaking of Flickr...I wanted to pop in this thread to link you to lots more images from the Luminous real time tech demo (which included invites for press and community). Also the tech demo now is being shown at the E3 booth...so yeah we had a closed doors event, but its widely available now.

Check out the stream for those shots!

Hopefully that clears up any confusion!

Even if it is...

http://gematsu.com/2012/06/sony-playstation-4-games-are-in-development

Versus XIII is running out of time. Sorry, I bought my PS3 mainly for that game... though, I have enjoyed it for other games like Yakuza & I plan to get AC3, Sleeping Dogs, Last of Us & others but yeah. I don't care... I spent my $600 at the time for a reason you may not like my opinion, as I yours but everyone is entitled to one.

Versus is hardly running out of time, PS3 will be viable for more than two years from now.

NES 1,2,3
SNES 4,5,6
PS1 7,8,9
PS2 10,10-2,12
PS3 13,13-2,V

Nothing out of the norm for FF releases really.

Poor Verses. Not only will it look "dated" because of of all the next gen demos and such (like this one) but it will probably feel dated too considering it was designed years ago and a lot of great RPGs have come out in recent years

I just get the impression when I actually get to play it I feel like "I would have been blown away four years ago, but now though..."

So what's the definitive difference between this and Versus? Because I honestly don't see one.

*I like this a little better than Versus based on the protag, but that's just me.

My feelings exactly. I almost feel like SE kind of gets what people want out of an FF these days with a real time demo like this. If only they could make a game with this feel and world, I would be impressed a lot moreso.

I just came across this! And after seeing Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1312... I officially want Nintendo to crash and burn and go completely out of business. I absolutely hate their approach to hardware advancements. I'll take a 540/PS4/Steambox with dual 680's for over a $1000... just give me visuals of this caliber.

Edit:
Took the survey. Commented on reducing shaky cam style. Loved everything else.

Versus XIII still uses the gameplay of the Crystal Tools engine, it only "borrows" the lighting used from Luminous engine. (At least, that's the last information we were given.)

Final Fantasies have had guns, I don't see the problem.

Speaking of guns and Versus, it's really strange that game has knights with machine guns, and this guy looking like he's from the future with swords. Bizarre.

Thanks!
I want that cute white Moogle mug :3

pro's:

-pretty much everything

cons:

-music (needs more hamauzu/uematsu/shimomura/mizuta)
-middle eastern solider enemy designs (seen this a bit too much in fps)

Jaw dropping stuff, but wouldn't a full game on this cost a fortune?
Not really, asset wise, it's very impressive, but it's still not close to their current CG work. They're used to building assets of beyond this quality. It all depends on how much scripting we'd see during actual gameplay. If you take that first FFXIII trailer, that would cost a fortune to build because the implication is gameplay which was dynamic, but meticulously animated, and with dynamic camera work which really highlights those animations, that's an almost unthinkable workload. If this game is a normal Final Fantasy that just has cutscenes that look that good, it wouldn't cost significantly more than XIII.

Can't wait to cast meteor on Bin Laden.

Seriously, pretty nice! We won't get anything close to this I suspect tho. I however liked the change in character design.

I just want a game from Square Enix that focuses on consistency.

Final Fantasy always starts off good, but somewhere in the middle, the game's story becomes overcomplicated (quit using stupid slang that sounds the same L'Cie, Fal'Cie, 'Cie), the characters become hollow, and the game takes a trip to the moon and back (why am I always fighting a "God" at the end?).

I answered the questions regarding the tech-demo video honestly and accurately. I sure as hell utilized the comments space though to express my demand for FFVIIremake, KHIII & VersusXIII, and my disappointment in not having these three titles available yet.

I don't know what sort of conflicts and challenges SE faces internally, but I do know that for the past 10 years they've put out one disappointing title after another, put fans through ridiculous delays with not much to show for it, and showcased only minimal stuff mostly behind closed doors as if they're making games for themselves in a self-serving manner, rather than creating product for their demographic. They deserve to be spammed with 'obvious' fan-requests. At every opportunity too, because from the looks how they've functioned this gen, their sensebilities have completely swerved out of sync from their fans' and demographic's.

I'd say this is miles ahead of those games. Particle effects, lightning, object interaction, clothing physics are all on or above the FFVII:AC CGI level.

yes, of course it does.
But those games i mentioned look miles ahead of last gen attempts. Now, i know there might not be a similar leap, but we have no idea what a machine 10+ times more powerful than current ones could do when used properly.

edit: also looks miles ahead of Samaritan and anything UE4 i've seen.

As with the rebel/soldier guys, the complaints are probably about their design, not their existence.

I mean it's just a tech demo as far as we know so it doesn't matter too much, but I wouldn't say their designs for the rebel group and their weapons were particularly imaginative at all, especially compared to several other things that were shown. I'd be somewhat disappointed if this were in an actual Final Fantasy game as they usually try to be a little more creative with their designs for rebel/military organizations.

It was my understanding that they had the engine running live in real-time, and that the changes being done in the editor were driving what was changing in the engine. This sort of remote hookup of authoring app to engine isn't anything new (we did this at LEC for the TFU games), but doesn't mean that what's being shown isn't the real-time engine.

It's one area though, let's just say for the sake of debate, this is Final Fantasy XV, and the elements on display will be in the game. This section takes place in a shanty town outside of whatever that huge fancy city is. I would expect more rough and ready troops in this shitty area, and then closer to what we've seen in previous futuristic Final Fantasies in that city.

I got a serious Panzer Dragoon vibe from this. Anyways, this tech demo had me more interested in the lore and the world than all of FFXIII did.

Doesn't TFU run on a proprietary engine? Ronin?
I mean, Ubisoft shown AC assets in a Autodesk showreel (maya centred obviously) but they were clear about not being ingame stuff,
at that level you can buff up AA, texture filtering, and change whatever you want and make Maya render that thing, but it's more a phase of design.

It may be a limit o mine, but I fail to understand of something directly out of Maya or 3DMAX (not game engines, but game engine assets creators)
can be interpreted as game engine realtime, even if they have proprietary custom tools, plugins.

Has anyone answered what this is running on?

No developer has stated what the specs have been on their "high-end PC" demo rigs.

Doesn't TFU run on a proprietary engine? Ronin?

And isn't this new engine pretty much also a new proprietary one?

Again, I believe the real-time render being shown isn't native to Maya or whatever authoring tool is being used, but S-E's actual game engine. It's more likely the authoring tool's own 3D view is hidden/disabled, since having it active would impact performance.

Very high end DX11 PC. That's all we know.

the demo was running on a very high-end PC with off-the-shelf commercial hardware.

I'm not saying they can't be "rough and ready", just that their portrayal of the soldiers and their arsenal wasn't that interesting, particularly in comparison to several other elements of the demo. The only thing about I really thought was a fictitious but interesting aspect that tied it together with the rest of what was shown was the rapid animal mutation.

And isn't this new engine pretty much also a new proprietary one?

uhm, if this should answer my question, sorry, I don't get it :P

Again, I believe the real-time render being shown isn't native to Maya or whatever authoring tool is being used, but S-E's actual game engine.

I get what you mean, but when you have the SE guy talking about changes/interactions in realtime while camera work, lighting and assets switching show Maya menus/tabs, isn't it weird?
Shouldn't all this stuff happen during the playback of the executable (not the source code one) and maybe have a UI of his own?

WiiU had a techdemo of Zelda that played like this on the console.
