Nintendo E3 2012 Conference Thread

Have just been going through the thread to see the reactions of people from the conference because I couldn't see it live.

Came across this and was amazed. The damage control is hilarious.

Ignoring the content of that quoted post, what the hell is the point of posting this? Gloating? Going "hee-hee haw-haw, silly ninthings"? Ridiculous Schadenfreude unbecoming of a video gamer.

Did Nintendo say anything at all about Wii-U up-rezzing or doing anything for BC Wii games on the Wii-U? I've been thinking about picking up the couple Wii games I wanted to play like Xenoblade and Muramasa.

Aliens: Colonial Marines was going to be shown on stage, but Sega pulled it at the last minute, because sega thought the game wasnt finished enough or some bullshit. Same with Retro's + EAD Tokyo's new games. Nintendo decided they only wanna show games from this year. (all info from shockingalberto).

IGN interview yesterday. Said we're not gonna see Retro's game for a while.

It's annoying but not surprising. Didn't we only find out about DKCR at E3 2010 not much more than 5 months before its release? Anyways, I still think they could have shown or said something. Reggie's "aw shucks" quip to IGN that 'The president of Retro would be calling me if we were to show something this early!' has me very skeptical. I'm sure Retro is well respected and hopefully treated well by NCL and NOA but I seriously doubt they have the pull to protest when one of their games is shown or announced. And don't forget the deleted tweet from the Retro employee months ago saying they were in "crunch time" and burning the oil by watching MST3K.

Pikmin isn't this year, why'd they show that?

Reggie on IGN said the Retro game won't be revealed for a long while. So pulling the Retro game at the last minute seems unlikely.

I don't have much hope for up res wii games, but if I can play wii game like xenoblade on the gamepad (screen on gamepad, use like classic controller) then I'm in
for a low price lol

IGN says Watch_Dogs MIGHT come to Wii U, but not now, says Ubisoft, because they already have a ton of games coming to the Wii U, but it's not out of the question.

UGH TIMES 10

That's the kind of irrational Nintendo fan I cannot stand. I mean, damn.

Well it's listed as "launch window" in the release list, so it'll probably be in 2013.

There are seriously 5 different designations on that list and on Nintendo's website. It is foolish to try and divine anything from them.

Well i guess I will keep hunting for info. Since Xenoblade was a limited release i want to try and pick it up now before the price on it becomes outrageous.

It's launch window. 3-4 months after release, which means early 2013.

It's still close to the release of the Wii U, that's why they showed it.
So does that mean no games from Activision, Capcom or other 3rd parties will come for 3-4 months?

That's too bad Sega didn't think Aliens CM was ready but I find it really odd considering how long they've been working on it and all the interviews over the last three months with Randy Pitchford and other Gearbox folks talking about how it's already the best looking version in their opinion and features they were excited about (can't wait to see the motion tracker).

Crap. Hopefully if wont get bumped too far past January but I'm sure they'll try to push it back as far as they can. :/

Thanks, i missed the part about Aliens, i read about the Nintendo games though.
Still, i think the whole attitude of Gearbox CEO about the WiiU is really overlooked, he seemed so excited about this version of the game, and to me it seems probably the most interesting third party game for the console at the moment.

My basic question is: what have Nintendo developers been doing over the last 2-3 years? God knows they weren't working on the Wii or DS, given the droughts both suffered. So if they were working on the WiiU, where is the content? I'm sure Nintendo has tons of games in development that haven't been revealed, as do all companies, but the lack of showing anything noteworthy or particularly new outside of a couple titles is very surprising.

From a software perspective I really see nothing that warrants a launch purchase of this console. Nintendo Land doesn't look like a killer ap by any stretch of the imagination, and the third party titles are largely ports; I seriously doubt many people will buy a system ($300) just to pay $60 for games that came out months ago (and more than a year ago in the case of Batman AA).

Overall the entire idea just baffles me.

It has 2D Mario for the masses.
Nintendo Land for the casuals.
Pikmin, Assassin's Creed, and ZombiU for the core.
And P-100 for the the awesome.

Not too bad, though I do wish we could have seen more 3rd party support or a big Nintendo IP like Zelda, 3D Mario, or Retro's project.

The console will have a good launch beause of NSMBU alone. And other exclusives (Pikmin, Lego City, Zombi, P-100, Rayman) don't look too bad. This are besides the casual games (Nintendoland, SiNg, Just dance 4, Wii Fit U) at least 6 exclusives, which could become decent games.

P: is Just dance 4 WiiU exclusive?

well in addition to not having made any huge-major wii or ds games since early 2011 (when skyward sword wrapped up), the 3ds stuff was a joke:

1. a 2004 tech demo for the ds that was made into a full game with the help of other people
2. a remake of ocarina of time that was originally a tech demo for the 3ds that was done by an outside team
3. a remake of star fox 64 that was done by an outside team
4. a rushed super mario 3d land
5. a rushed mario kart 7 (with the help of retro)
6. an update to nintendogs
7. pilotwings resort, which was also outsourced to an outside team

kid icarus was their first game that looked like it took a lot of effort, and that thing started as a wii game and hit a year after launch. even now nintendo has luigi's mansion 2 being done by an outside team, while animal crossing slips into 2013 for some inexplicable reason. i thought their lack of effort on the 3ds was because they were focusing really hard on the wii u, especially given that pikmin 3 was originally a wii game. i'm surprised we're actually seeing a game from sakamoto's guys before something from one of the ead tokyo teams.

I'm not sure Pikmin even qualifies as a "core" game; it wasn't a noteworthy selling title for the GC, why will that change now. ZombiU looks pretty bad to me, it's hard to see that as a selling point; I'm sure it'll look better by November though. And Assassin's Creed...is anyone going to buy a WiiU to play that instead of getting it for the 360? I'm at a loss here.

Darksiders II looks interesting but it'll be out at least a month before on the 360/PS3

Great rundown. The funny thing, at least for me, was when Nintendo unveiled the 3DS in 2012 I was overwhelmed with all of the first party announcements. Obviously at that point we had no idea how little Nintendo's internal teams really had to do with it.

Bad organization. Bad rationalization.

They grew of about 2000 people reaching now the WW total of 5000, but their development capabilities actually decreased if you ask me.

I have the feeling that this is due to the fact that Miyamoto, Tezuka and some other general director want to approve every single game before going to the market and this slow down the entire process.
Yes: these people once were the reason of Nintendo's success and now they are more of a hindrance. The evidence is that the teams within Nintendo that are nowadays the best are the farthest from Kyoto, i.e. Retro Studios, Monolith Soft and EAD Tokyo.

With the new building in Kyoto, I hope that something is going to change but in any case Nintendo should stop hiring and make teams compete with each other.

Don't make me laugh.

I really think we are overreacting a bit with Nintendo's first party stuff. If we assume that Nintendo is telling the truth and they are simply refusing to show stuff past next March, the first party output looks just fine.

Go back to the Wii's launch window- the first party efforts were not exactly stellar. Its just that we knew about Galaxy, Metroid, and Smash right from the start.

Yikes. That kind of bundling I could see being done at an individual retailer level, but I'd be surprised if Nintendo tried that.

I don´t see it as totally unrealistic, rather i see it for a chance for them to make more profit, and dodge angry hc gamers who rants about owning so much Nintendo plastic aldready.

But i can certainly agree with you that it would be surprising if they would make such a drastic change to their marketing strategy.

LOL, how funny would it be if Retro's game is a planned launch title and Nintendo withheld it from e3 to increase the surprise factor? I would laugh for days at the gall of it. The internet reaction would also be pure gold.

Surprise! GTA V timed exclusive and Metroid Prime 4: Legacy of the Chozo/2D revival both for launch!

Sadly, Nintendo has obviously proven they are neither competent nor awesome enough to pull off an epic reverse-troll like this.

I will call another awesome display of Nintendo Land, with minigame NUMBER SIX REVEALED!!

Reggie - "But before you go..I have one more thing to share with you. It's what you have all been waiting for. ANOTHER TOUR OF NINTENDO LAND!".

Show over.

5000 people and....this output???

Don't make me laugh.

Just because Nintendo didn't show games doesn't mean those games don't exist. This is especially on point given Nintendo restricted its E3 showing to Wii U launch. I'm just as disappointed as anyone else about the terrible conference, but I think you're letting that disappointment influence your rationality.

The show ended with some damn Miis walking around with some pathetic fireworks and an confused audience giving tepid applause.

Perfectly summed it up.

Oh, shit, did I miss yet another redefinition of the term "core" by the Video Game Standards Board?

It used to mean a person who puts a lot of time and effort into playing a game or games, or a person who treats gaming as an enthusiast hobby.

So am I the only person who has no problem whatsoever with no Mario/Zelda/Metroid being shown? To the point that I'd be literally disappointed if they were?

Granted, I do not consider myself representative of this board, because I've had a hard time keeping up with new releases over the past few years, but the Wii had 2 full installments each of those ones, with the more recent ones not particularly far back. There's a point at which continued announcements work against the enormous status those 3 have out of sheer dilution.

I genuinely like the fact that the big games here are Pikmin and a completely goofy P-100 from plat. I also think mini-game collections are fun and will may get Wii Fit U, so again, not normal I guess.

I mean, in a perfect world this could have been augmented with stuff like Smash, a Retro Star Fox game, and some cool RPG game from Monolith. That probably would have dramatically changed the tenor of the response without cutting into my concerns about the importance of franchise scarcity. But then, it should be taken as granted that those guys all have something coming eventually, there is cool stuff on the way, and I'm hardly concerned about not having enough to play. shrug

It seems like we're reaching the point where a game is defined as 'casual' if it doesn't help push forward some supposed agenda of the Hardcore Gaming Nation, irrespective of what the game itself actually is.

NSMB U, a 2D platformer in one of the most traditional venerable gaming series, is no longer "core". Pikmin, a freakin' RTS, is no longer "core". But I swear, the real reason seems they're being called casual is because some people don't think they prove Nintendo is going to be Hard Core (BRAH) this gen.

I have to admit, while I am very curious to see what form 3D Mario, Smash Bros, and Zelda are going to take on Wii U, and would have liked to have heard something, I also am not crying tears that nothing on those games were shown. It's patently ridiculous to entertain the mere thought that Nintendo 'has no plan' for games like that by not showing them yet. But that's what a lot of the E3 reactions come off like.

Because of the hardcore distaste for NSMB and its all audiences appeal (and gargantuan sales history), the fact that a Nintendo console is being launched with a mainline Mario game for the first time in 15 years is being downplayed. The mainstream doesn't give a crap about hardcore complaining over art style. It seems proven the mainstream adores back-to-roots Mario.

And while it's true that Nintendo should have really shown off P-100 at the press conference, as far as I'm concerned it's an AAA game for system launch. AAA doesn't just mean production values and 40 million dollars worth of voice acting. It's a full-bore Platinum game with Nintendo backing, and it's going to enjoy the bump of a Nintendo system launch.

So am I the only person who has no problem whatsoever with no Mario/Zelda/Metroid being shown? To the point that I'd be literally disappointed if they were?

I was not expecting them, but I thought we'd at least have a shot at an Excite game, or Wave Race, or F-Zero, or StarFox - something we haven't seen in a while. Pikmin's great, but one of those in addition would have gone really far IMO.

Haven't been following this thread, but has any of the hardcore ninteno fans spun this press conference as good or passable?

One or two have tried but overall the vast majority of them said it was a huge failure.

Reggie - "But before you go..I have one more thing to share with you. It's what you have all been waiting for. ANOTHER TOUR OF NINTENDO LAND!".

I know, that part was just completely mindblowing. I literally couldn't believe those words had come out of Reggie's mouth at that point. His words and the final shots of that conference with all the pastel cardboard NintendoLand crap sitting on stage will go down in history as one of the single worst pieces of media marketing of all time. Reggie should never be allowed to say or assume 'This is what you've all been waiting for' EVER again. I don't care if he's about to reveal a Retro Zelda game, every fiber of my mind will be knee deep in "Yeah right" from now on during every single one of his annnouncements right up until the reveal itself. So much credibility and fan cache lost in that one sentence he uttered that it's unbelievable.

I'm not just speaking of this particular presentation. The fact is that the output of DS and Wii during the period of time 2005-2008 was better than the last couple of years. And considering that they kept hiring 200-400 people per year since 2006, I'm of course baffled by the lack of progresses.
