Lunatic on Reddit: "Reddit, I think there is a giant (nuclear) coverup afoot."

I don't usually like reposting stuff that's currently on the reddit front page. But this one is a little interesting, over 4,000+ comments in under 6 hours. With different people from different locations posting their own "proof".

I don't expect this to be anything more than a false alarm, but this kind of shit is fun!

It's not really worth a copy and paste since he has a bunch of links/pics attached and constant updates.

Anyone in the area hear anything? Some were reporting sounds of an explosion.

I hear deep booming sounds all of the time where I live (SW Louisiana), but I also occasionally see military jets and shit because Northrop Grumman has a place out here. I stopped thinking anything of it, but the descriptions of the sounds in that post are very familiar.

edit: To clarify, I don't think nuclear explosions have been happening where I live.

Something has happened, and there's a media blackout because the government/military will not inform the public about it.

7,000 CPM is below the levels expected in a nuclear meltdown, according to an oxford journal I just googled that discusses the Fukushima incident.

Edit: 100,000 CPM expected for nuclear meltdowns. There are no running nuclear plants in Indiana.

I don't know what it could be. With so many sources reporting the spike in levels, it's unlikely they all malfunctioned or suffered a misreading.

Sounds like it was a mistake guys. If there was a fucking nuclear plant explosion/leak they would tell people to evacuate, wtf..
 
Sounds hella interesting and cool, but I doubt anything is really going on.

First things first, count rate does not translate into biological hazard measured in Sv. Biological effects change with the energy of the radiation imparted and the type of radiation. If you take apart your smoke alarm at your house and put a Geiger counter to it, you will get thousands of counts in a matter of seconds. But there is no danger because the source inside emits alpha particles which bounce of your skin. The biological effects also depend on energy of the radiation, and the [1] EPA link you provided demonstrates this. Depending in what gamma energy range the detector is set up to detect, it will register radically different count rates. As you can see they register over 1000 CPM in gamma energy range 2. So your claims of " 7k+ CPM is about 49 mSv" is just not science and doesn't mean anything.

Second, radiation is really easy to detect, even in incredibly tiny levels, which is why accidents that happen half a world away, like in Chernobyl or Fukushima, can be picked up here in the US. So the idea that any harmful event could be covered up is ridiculous. If a significant release happened in Indiana, the Turkey Creek Point plant in Miami Florida would pick up the radiation.

Third, the assertion that somehow this is a nuclear caused event. Like I stated above the CPM varies with the energy range the detector is set, so it could be that the Lower Level Discriminator (LLD) broke on those detectors. But even if it didn't, that doesn't mean the uptick in radiation is nuclear related. The nuclear plant by Crystal River in Florida gets false alarms frequently from the radiation that comes blowing over from the coal plant only a few miles away.

Pretty much this. It would be reported in Canada, England, France, etc. Real nuclear thingies can't be covered up. Trust me, I'm a scientifican.
 
I heard a loud explosion type sound today, actually. It was so loud that it set off car alarms and caused everyone on my street to walk outside.

Not sure if it has anything to do with this... Probably just coincidence.

Then everyone else with upvoted comments is like 'is it that hard to run outside with a Geiger counter?' and they get ignored so...
 
I'm near number 32 on the map, so I'm pretty sure I'm fucked if this news is true. Meh.. gonna ditch the internet and go drink beers.
 
If there was a nuclear explosion/release the particles released would be easily detected by other countries i.e Canada (almost straight away) then European countries later this week.

So i'm guessing false alarm because there is no way that nuclear release of any kind can be covered up by one country.

Yeah but like, the U.S. did a pretty good job with orchestrating 9/11 and stuff.
 
Reminds me of the guy on reddit convinced that Fort Calhoun here in Omaha (#19 on that map) was actually actively failing and there was a coverup because it was being flooded last year.

Being here myself, I pointed out the fact that the plant had already been shut off for months for maintenance and upgrades.... and we'd notice a mass evacuation of materiel from Offutt Air Force Base.

Also you know, the fact that an actual nuclear explosion would be setting off detectors worldwide, and we don't exactly have the power to gag every single country in the world with detectors from talking.
 
What if we're all dying from radiation right now, spending our last minutes trolling the fuck out of the guy who's trying to warn us?
 
One more thing. This edit: EDIT 4 I heard from a semi-verified source that minot afb in north dakota, one of the largest nuclear bases, is running a nuclear response and containment "training exercise" right now with their b-52s. take this with a grain of salt, I'm not vouching for it EDIT: this redditor verifies

I live pretty near there and I know a guy on that base. They do that every week. Literally every week. edit: less than that apparently. But still... When you have most of the countries nuclear missiles (i'm pretty sure North Dakota still does) it's good to have your drills down.
