Got a phone interview with the Apple Store tomorrow for a warehouse specialist. Anything I should know a head of time? Kinda weird that it's a phone interview.

I just graduated and have been searching for a job in my field (IT) for a few months. It is beyond frustrating. Almost every "entry-level" job i come across requires 2-4 years of experience. How in the fuck was I supposed to get this experience in the first place? I guess you could say internships, but those are just as competitive as jobs and I was never able to land one in college despite applying for as many as I could find.

Anyway I realize that I am not saying anything that hasn't been said in this thread plenty of times already, I just felt like ranting.

I feel your pain man. I can't fuckin take it anymore. I'm startin to lose opportunities to students getting paid internships while I'm graduated and just begging for scraps on the side. It's either a) be in school and get the internship, or b) have 3+ years of experience. Where the fuck is the middle ground? What happens to the rest of us?

Get fucked, pretty much.

My wife is in that same situation and it's driving her crazy. I'm glad that I at least have the job experience, but I barely ever get calls. I had a second interview today, so now I have to wait all weekend at least before I find out if I got the job or not.

I am not unemployed, but I am changing careers. After 7 years of working in television, I returned to school to study Networking. But then it hit me, what is the point of working at a job for the next two years when my goal is to leave eventually. I'll look for an entry level job in IT and work at a help desk while I go to school.

The lack of experience isn't discouraging me. I have 7 years of professional experience, a bachelor's, and I am currently studying to achieve goals that far exceed a help desk. Besides, I didn't have 2 years experience when I landed my first job in TV.

What did you do in television man?

That's the industry I'm trying to get footing in, actually! I'm in Toronto. Were you in LA?

Thanks man! Replied.

Also, question:

Anyone remember a thread that had a lot of resumé talk? A few people put up amazing templates and other great resumé notes. It may even be this thread and I just don't know how to find it. Would appreciate a link if anyone saved it.

'nother day, 'nother round of unreturned messages, tepid cold calls, and bad news about production crews being full up, and being told to look elsewhere.

I've decided that I'm giving this another two months, and if it's more of the same, I'm going to go back to school, with my family's blessing, in January. I just dunno what else to do, but to refocus what talents I have into a different field that would better harness them.

I was officially hired Monday, and I'm starting next week. Over the phone sales and tech support, incoming calls only. $12/hour, full time. Yay!

I have now been unemployed for 8 months, it sucks but I'm not giving up - I started at a job application training program were they teach us how to present ourself.

Unpaid internships? More like fucking slavery. I don't see how some of you do it reading the past few pages. When I was in college, I needed a job to pay rent/food/utilities. Not having a job was not a fucking option. Damn companies, completely fucking useless.

For some of you, sending in a resume with the following, "Really, I'm the best there ever will be and if you don't hire me, you're a motherfucker" would yield the same results then sending something legitimate. It may actually be worth it, it'll certainly catch eyes.

How does one go about negotiating for a higher pay? I'm getting promoted very soon, and I've actually held the position before (twice actually) and I'd like to negotiate higher than what I was paid when I last held the position. I've also been with the company for 4 years, so I feel like that's only reasonable, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that effectively.

I think my year and a half of unemployment is turning people away so I said fuck it and added "stay at home father" to my history to let them know what Iv'e been doing.

God that would be perfect.

Did you need certs?

Those of you not applying to entry level jobs because they require experience should apply anyways.

Sometimes they accept your time spent in college as experience, other times it is just a boiler plate phrase employers place on job listings and don't really care how much work experience you have.

Make them turn you down for a job.

Anyone here ever use a "job listing agency" doing business under the names Pro Resources or Employment 1?

Yes, certs were required. I know you live down here, and if you've got em and Margate is within driving distance, maybe you should apply. PM me if you want more info.

I finally have a job!!!
I won't be starting for a while though, the paperwork and application stuff takes about 45 days. But I can keep drawing unemployment 'till then, so I'm good.

Guy called me up today and was giving me some information about the job and location, allowed me to ask some questions, and then dropped a bombshell on me by asking "So do you want it?" I figured I would get flown out to interview but that was pretty much my interview right there.

I'm going to be flown up to BWI sometime in about a month and a half and then I will fly by AMC to Thule Air Base, Greenland. It is going to be such an interesting place to work in. I will be getting there in August or so, so I will have the opportunity to see their first sunset in 4 months. The 4 months of daylight will just be ending and I will have some time before the 3 months straight of darkness starts. 900 miles away from the North Pole and 700 above the Arctic Circle. So far north that the Northern Lights cannot be seen. If you travel a bit you can glimpse them, but they are the Southern Lights by then. Winds up to 100 knots in the winter with temps of neg 40 or so. The warmest it may get is about 50 F in the summer. The port is frozen over for all but 3 months of the year. Frostbite can hit exposed skin in less than a minute. Only about 600 people and 400 of them are Danish. American military and contractors equal about 140 or so people.

It sounds like such a crazy place... I was being considered for a slot at Diego Garcia, the atoll in the middle of the Indian Ocean, but I know what to expect in a tropical environment. This stuff in the Arctic Circle is something else though. It is such a unique experience that I became interested quickly. I mean, I don't know too many people who have hiked glaciers or ridden dogsleds or been in -40 temps or scoped out polar bears in real life.

I will be pretty much doing SATCOM stuff there. I don't know too much SATCOM, my time in the military was more tactical radios along the HF, UHF, and VHF spectrum, but the training will be really intensive and RF theory is pretty much the same for everything. The compensation package I am looking at is about $63-64K, all tax-free. Food will be taken care of, accommodations taken care of....
Besides paying the bills back home for the apartment my wife and daughter will be staying in (since I can't take them with me), the only thing I will need to take care of there is maybe internet. But the internet is ran by the Danish apparently and they charge $90-$220 a month for internet. Kinda pricey but there won't be much else to spend money on and if I want to talk to my wife and kid every day, it will be a must-have payment every month. I'll be able to come home too at some point and use my 5 weeks paid time off.

The fitness center there is supposed to be one of the nicest in the Air Force, so I am looking forward to spending a year getting back into shape. Doing a lot of cardio, of course, to lose weight, but I also want to get back into lifting. I have slacked off for 7 months or so and am going to be ashamed when I am not able to put up a 200+ lb military press.

Food is supposed to be awesome there too. The chow hall where I will be eating has a lot of Danish workers, so I will not only be able to eat what I am used to, but also try whatever the hell Danish people eat. Pastries I guess.

There are limited recreation activities, but it is all about what you make out of it. Apparently they have one of the most northern-most golf courses in the world there, 2 9-hole courses. The community center has a lot of games and movies, sometimes tournaments. There are plenty of opportunities to hike. Apparently you can hunt; I don't know what for, if it is musk ox or what, but I could do it if I were the hunter-type. The small AAFES facility gets a lot of media in, so I will be able to clear a lot of games out my backlog. They will pay for 350 lbs of household goods to be flown, so I am taking a ton of games and stuff. The room I will be staying in has a fridge, flatscreen, blu ray player, linens and stuff... They issue me cold weather gear upon arrival too, so I don't even need to bring much clothing with me.

It seems like a really interesting job and place. One year in Greenland working on radios and netting almost $65K tax-free. I'll be able to pay off my debt very quickly (only about $5K, so not too much), send money home for the family and send them to the Philippines every couple months (they can't stay out of the country for too long this early in the citizenship process is why), buy a nice computer and Vita, and put away some money for a car when I get back.

The inside hiring is really good too. They take care of the employees and give them preference when looking at other openings in the company, so I am hoping that after a year I can get picked up for one of their radio jobs in Okinawa. That is my dream anyway. I got in trouble while in the military and lost my assignment to Japan, so I may finally have a shot at getting there.

The only real downside for me, besides small stuff like the internet prices, is that I won't be able to see my family for a year (minus the time when I come home on vacation). I will get to be here for my daughter's 3rd birthday at the end of the month, but I will miss her 4th. This whole time though I have been looking for jobs in the middle east, so I should have been preparing myself mentally for having to leave my family. I am just going to miss them a ton. But taking the job and being able to provide again and take care of them is worth it.

I know I typed up a lot, but I am just so pumped right now. Finally a job again, doing something I enjoy. I will finally have money again. I can start buying stuff I want now. I am going to be able to lift weights and play games a lot there, which are two things I really enjoy. And I will be able to say I have been in a place where it is nighttime for 3 straight months, which sounds awesome to me.

I cannot wait!
Good luck to everyone else out there looking! Sorry for rambling...

Now to spend the next month and a half continuing to apply for jobs that I don't want so I can keep submitting my weekly unemployment claim. So lame.....

Edit: And my fear of not being able to afford a suit for an interview ended up being all for naught!

That's awesome news! Are you getting investigated for a clearance? Many of the SATCOM systems are in secure spaces. Air Force facilities are the best in the DOD. Do you get to eat in their mess hall? Their food is also usually the best in the DOD.

This experience will be resume bait for any DOD contractor or GS position out there, so definitely a home run.

My secret clearance from the Air Force is still active and they already checked it out in JPAS to make sure it is good. Usually SATCOM stuff requires a TS or even a TS/SCI, but I'm good for this job. And maybe I can get hooked up with a TS at some point.
And yeah, I'll be eating at the chow hall. Haven't eaten at one in a long time, even while I was still in. Here's hoping midnight chow is amazing. I want some badass omelets.

They have a good education program with the company and I still have my GI Bill, so I think I am going to try to get some certs too. A+ and CCNA are the ones I really want.

I figure I can just do contracting for a while. I need a degree under my belt to get a good GS position. And a better degree to get a great GS position. But that is where all the money is, so it is certainly a good goal to shoot for on down the line.

Besides being away from my family, I just remembered one other thing that sucks about it:
The medical facility there cannot do anything VA related. So I am only at the beginning of my disability claim process and I won't be able to get my medical appointments done there. I need to call the VA tomorrow and see if there is any kind of expediting that they can do, to at least get me seen by a doc and then they could take their time with the rating process, but with hundreds of thousands of claims currently being process or something, I don't see it happening. I'd like to be getting that $900 a month disability soon though.

My first job interview in several months, as I have no car I have to rely on public transport. The thing is, the only bus that goes down that route begins it day quite late. Ugh, me and my luck

Yeah, that kinda sucks. Are you going to be able to make it where you are going before it starts?

I would think that there is one reason that would make riding a bus a bit better than if I were to drive myself. I would be able to keep a suit looking better on a bus, since the seats are higher than sitting in a car and stuff. Anytime I had to wear my service dress to work while in the military, everything would get all jacked up by the time I got to work.
I guess the bus would give you a bit of time to reread some information about the job and company or go over some of your answers too, since your attention won't be on driving.

I'm in a similar position. Got an interview on the 3rd of July far from any station. I'll call them and discuss things before calling it off - Just feels like I've given up.

I'm currently employed but me and my girl want to make a move soon and get new jobs.

I'm doing a leadership development program at work right now, and one of the best advices I got out of it is to tailor your resume for each job you apply. It takes way longer, but by including the key words they use in their job descriptions, the chances are much greater of landing an interview.

For most business/finance/sales positions, they want to see numbers too! They don't care for most of the fluff. They might read the first bullet point for each previous job, so we have to make that one count.

My girl is in a more difficult spot. She has her master's in African Literature and wants to be a writer, but in the city we live in she was only able to get a part-time English teaching position in a community college, and a science teacher for this in-school field trip program that schools hire to come in and teach the kids fun science experiments. She loves kids, but the job involves driving to all these different schools, carrying supplies everywhere, and it pays absolute shit.

She says she spent 5 years applying to jobs, and is too discouraged by it to think positively about her prospects. Any literature/liberal arts graduates in gaf? what have been your experiences looking for jobs?

Congrats Man! Truly a great opportunity and I am sure you'll make the most of it.
It's a nice location, I would absolutely invest in a vita and a decent laptop to make sure your taken care of on the technology front - mail is the same in other places like the AOR so if you order something from Amazon it's going to take a week and half to go to an APO/AFO

Sounds like you have a great plan (work, focus on the family and schooling)
I would totally skip the A+ (unless you want it for personal reasons) the cert isn't a lifetime ceert anymore and you have to recertify every 3 years...same with Cisco certs but those are worth it.
In IT, it is becoming more and more evident that employers (at least in the defense industry)want to see that Bachelors...so get that, couple it with your clearance and military experience and you'll have a nice long career ahead of you.

Not to rain on your parade, but when the employer promises to take care of you when your tour is done, I wouldn't take that as law as I have many friends who have done tours in various places making bank and then come back and the company can't place them anywhere stateside.
While your there, network, keep a smile on your face and be a "company man" that is the easiest way to make sure they want to keep you - oh an do a great job! :)

Thanks.
I have a list of stuff I want to order from Amazon already, but the Vita will be hard to obtain, with the USPS not shipping lithium batteries.

They have told me that the inside hiring process is great but I know not to get my hopes up. I probably will and dream big of going to Japan or somewhere, but if I can't get anything, then it is the perfect time to use my GI Bill and get that Bachelors. I've seen how many great jobs there are out there in my field that want it and I may actually use my GI Bill to get something worthwhile (the plan before was to use it in the Philippines so I could pretty much get paid to live there for 4 years and just bum around in school and get some degree. I'll probably go out for an engineering degree now though. Seems like a smarter idea anyway).

I didn't know that about the A+ cert, but I do know that the Cisco certs are damn valuable. I also want to get certified on fiber. My buddy from my old shop is testing for his fiber cert today. It wouldn't really help TOO much in the radio world (fiber is used, but I don't ever see many jobs requiring a cert), but the fiber industry is VERY lucrative. It would be worth having that knowledge and being able to qualify for a cert whenever I potentially needed one.

Anyways, thanks again for the advice. I can't wait to start.

you can buy a laptop before you leave and more than likely get a used vita from one of the guys there who might be wrapping up to leave...happens all the time

I can't really buy a laptop before I leave.
Unemployment barely covers rent and bills and my wife's paychecks barely cover food and gas and stuff. I haven't been able to buy shit for months. I am going to see Iron Maiden next weekend, but tickets are $40 and I can fit it barely into the budget.

There is a small AAFES facility there that could have some stuff. I know they do special orders too, but I could see that being for Active Duty or ID card holders only. Then again, it is the only place to buy stuff for hundreds of miles, so maybe not. Eh, if it comes down to it I'll throw some cash some Senior Airman's way to place an order for me if I can't do it myself. Or like you said, I might find people there selling good stuff.

I have made some off-hand comments to my friend about buying his old laptop. He had a nice gaming laptop and then came back from Afghanistan and bought a $3500 gaming rig and abandoned the laptop. So I might be able to get that.

yea the small AAFES should have overpriced electronics...they usually do : P
Don't want to derail the thread - feel free to PM me if you have any questions...been there - done that - so I know there are good things ahead for you

for others in IT trying to get their footing in - it does suck that most entry level IT jobs require experience, but I can tell you as long as you don't stop looking - you will find something.
For what its worth USAjobs is a great place to start to see if local gov'ts are hiring.

Cool. If I think of anything, I'll shoot some questions your way.
Thanks a lot.

Edit: I know I have seen members of KC-GAF post in here before: I just came across a cool job for ITT Exelis (formerly ITT Mission Systems) working with the FAA, if there is anyone out there who has some technician and network experience. It's Kansas City, Kansas though, so the lame side of KC. But I would be kinda interested if I didn't now have a job lined up, just for the chance to go back home to work.

*Sigh* Was speaking to an alumni person in the area who thought there might have been a position of interest for me that paid well, but he responded back today and said they wouldn't open up a position till the Fall and that it would probably require more experience and highly technical knowledge.

Back to the drawing board.

Had a job prospect dangled in front of me yesterday that really picked me up. Was gonna be a return to the new season of a show I worked on and loved last year.

Got an email today; was a miscommunication. Position doesn't exist. Bam, gone.

Got a call an hour later; another position I'd accepted that was in the bag set to start next month, gone. Show's been canceled. Bam, gone.

Got word an hour after that, that my backup plan for some solid cash doing retail at my buddy's store is no longer an option, for now. Bam, gone.

Today is cosmic joke day.

I'm smiling and happy for some reason. Only direction is up right now.

I have three days of well-paying work next week on yet another show, and I have some skilled and talented people who know how screwed I've been lately, all looking out for me in the future, and I'm investigating a return to school in a field I hadn't considered before that's really exciting me. Just need a solid infusion of cash to make the next year function, and I can kickstart my life within 12 months.

Time for some big decisions.

This week was really tough on me. I managed to apply to the usual number of places per week that I do (4), but I spent much of my free time laying on the couch and watching TV.

It's been raining most of the week, so I haven't done any yardwork.

I got a job this week, too. I must have applied to at least 100 California State jobs, and I got hired at the first one that I interviewed at. It's gonna be weird going back to work after over four years, but at least I can support my family now.

Always sad to see this thread get bumped so often. This economy is a fucking bitch. Like for example, my company has so much work to offer atm but we can't recruit anyone because 3-6 months from now the situation could be bad again.

I feel bad for people graduating now because I was in the same situation not too long ago. :( That first job is the key. If you can land that, most of the pressure is off because you will gain at least some experience and finding the next job after that is much easier.

The only help I can offer is that don't ask for much wages on the first job. I asked for like 400-500 less than the average in my field. Of course, after you have gained solid ground on that job don't forget to ask for raises whenever it makes sense.

I think is one of the more depressing threads on GAF to read through. I usually read it and silently root for the guys that are trying to get work. I'm just lucky that I'm in a career field that isn't affected by the economy, and so my job is quite stable.

My company is hiring low tier (level 1) technical support at the moment, so if any of you guys are in the tech support field or have experience in web hosting/cpanel and such, it's at least an option. The pay will be low (probably $10 - $12 an hour to start depending on experience), but it's better than not making any money at all. The job's also work from home.

Click here for the job description

I've been at this company for 1 1/2 years now and I started out working the level 2 queue as a system admin. I was promoted to technical manager 6 months later and ran a shift, and then 6 months after that they moved me into the systems department as the sole server health administrator. I basically handle a lot of the bigger problems and ensure servers are running smoothly, help deploy fixes to our fleet of servers and so on. I've gotten two large pay increases during that time. So, it's definitely possible to move up in the company if you dedicate yourself.

Feel free to apply if you qualify and good luck. I know I've posted job openings in this thread a few times now, so hopefully someone gives it a whirl. I'd like to see a struggling gaffer get hired.

Hell yeah!
I was worried about getting my VA stuff done before leaving the country. It's not going to be complete anytime soon, but the only part I need to be here for is the medical appointments and I got my appointments scheduled finally.
So now I will have an income and soon also be making my $900 a month for disability.

I just wish I had been making it this whole time I was unemployed.

I've been making applications all morning and when I go to the bathroom, I miss a call. It was from an unknown number.

FUCK.

Why do they call from withheld numbers?

So I've got an interview next Tuesday and will be updating my resume this week, what should I tell my current manager? Also not sure which manager to use as the reference since the one who hired me has moved to a different location.

You usually don't tell anyone at your current company unless you plan on using them as a reference.

You usually don't use anyone at your current company as a reference unless you completely trust them to not gossip or retaliate.

Well, I'm back in the bread line as of last Monday, GAF. Was managing SEO/social media for a small credit repair company (5 employees total). Things were going great until business started slowing and my bosses moved me to another department that wasn't a good fit for me, which led to my losing the job. Really sucks; I was with the company for close to 4 years -- we were pretty much like family there...

So yeah, been hitting up employment agencies and Craigslist pretty much nonstop, looking for work. Anyone here in the social media game with tips on places to look for work, or any other helpful advice?

Well I'd have to give the manager 2 weeks notice right? I'd like to put the place under work experience, that doesn't count as a reference right?

The two week's notice only comes in after you've been offered the position.

A reference is different from experience. For a reference, you want to use someone who can talk you up as the perfect person for the job. You should also give the person a head's up that someone might be contacting them.

Whenever I've applied somewhere, I always check the "do not contact" option, if available, for my current employer. The only thing they can legally ask someone not listed as a reference is to verify whether you actually worked there.

Looks like I got a banking job through a temp agency. I am waiting for emails about background checks to fill out, and I have to get my fingerprints done. Standard procedure, I've done it before. Will only last a year or so though, but it's better than nothing.

By that time, I will qualify for unemployment again and hopefully the job market will pick up.

I hate the post-interview "we'll call you" suspense where companies decide if they actually want to hire you or not. I honestly appreciate being formally shut down, at least to the extent that I can get a little feedback on what I'm lacking or on missteps during the interview.

Good luck to everyone out there looking for work.
