I've got a PS3 and Xbox360 but getting bored of the same old stuff (there has been a few exceptions) and I am considering getting a iPad 3rd gen.

This will be my first iPad and was wondering if anybody could kindly recommend some good games?

Games like I used to play all that time ago....

There were Endless Runners and IAP filled games that time ago?

Yeah this always drives me crazy, when non-tech people advise others to clear the apps in the switcher. You NEVER have to close any apps EVER in iOS. It's designed to be idiot proof.

Are you sure about that?

Maybe I'm projecting but I regularly see in-app responsiveness increase when I close out other apps in the task switcher. The friendly young hipster at the Genius bar also suggested this.

Edit: Some apps must eat a share of memory while they remain in the switcher. Look at the Facebook app for example-it holds its state when open, otherwise it goes through the entire login/authentication cycle.

Yes background apps will be cleared out as needed but think about it this way. If you close everything else the app will use all available memory instead of just the bare minimum it needs to function.

As well. Crashes could be occurring from background apps being improperly removed from their memory addresses, making some functions fire in unexpected ways. Manual closing prevents that.

In an ideal world with perfect, no bugs programs and OS, you don't need to close background apps. Especially with all the apps out there, it's hard to make sure all the apps is bug free.

With my iPod touch 4th gen, I still get apps crashing from lack of memory from time to time. Looking at my crash logs, I can see the amount of memory taken by background apps which "may" have lead to the crashes. There's only a few apps that seems like it really helps if I manually close the background apps.

When I fire Infinite Blade on the iPhone 4 the framerate difference is pretty incredible if I kill the other apps manually so yeah, do it at your own discretion if you feel like it will improve something but there's no need to get obsessed about it.

I start closing my apps from the dock of my iPod touch 4th gen when Fairway Solitaire ran like crap and crashed all the time. It still crashes sometimes, but runs a lot better. I noticed even Downcast runs better if nothing else is in memory. Before it would occasionally get stuck on a "Preparing..." message.

They are few offenders that sap juice like no tomorrow. I've noticed TribezHD knocks the battery down fast if I just put the ipad in sleep rather than closing the app manually then putting it in sleep.
Of course I could be imagining it

When I say apps don't run in the background, this is not what I mean. There are plenty of apps that I know of (maybe all of them?) that will 'run' while you have the screen off. Warm device and depleted battery, just like you say.

I'm talking about hitting the home button-->app quits running.

Apps do drop off as resources need to be freed up, but if you launch a resource-hungry app with a lot of apps already running, suddenly creating a new, large demand for resources that are not available you can hardly be surprised when that app fails to load gracefully. If an app crashes on load I close apps manually or power cycle. The latter is often faster, to be honest.

Anyone know if Magic 2013 will release on the app store along with consoles?

Yep it's coming, we don't know in what exact form and how well it'll play, but Duels of the Planeswalkers has been announced for iOS this summer. :)

I NEED SUMMONER WARS NOW the master set is staring at me at home but I haven't had a chance to play it yet (unless I play against myself... Foreveralone), so I NEED SUMMONER WARS NOW PLAYDEK DO SOMETHING.

Also, why does the iOS boardgames thread title still not mention playdek BOOO

Well I knew it was coming just wanted to know if it was tomorrow like the other versions.

Guys, I'm considering upgrading to iPad 3. How do games like Gof2 HD run on iPad 3 at retina compared to iPad 2? Anyone notice any framerate differences?

Does anybody think they are going to revamp the app section of itunes to be more organized?

I wish I could just look at things in list view so the icons don't have to load. And the ability to have "playlists" or folders something, so I can organize stuff better. Yes, I have alot of games :(

It had some framerate hitches but the eye candy was worth it for me.

Unfortunately, the latest update to GoF2 HD not only scaled the resolution down to 1440x1080 (which looks fucking hideous) but it also doubled the size of the app. So it looks worse while taking up more space.

Their rationale was...

With patch 1.0.8 for Galaxy on Fire 2 HD the resolution has been slightly adjusted to a value of 1440x1080, since we could verify a couple of graphical performance issues with the new iPad.

We are aware that this decision is sad news for some players, but not all users of Galaxy on Fire 2 HD had some trouble with this phenomenon.

However, it is important for us that all players can benefit from a smooth running game as well on the new iPad. Therefore, we decided to use this solution, since we have received some messages from other players regarding to the performance of the new iPad.

Of course, we will consider on further actions to improve the performance of the game on any device in the future and we'd like to ask you to be patient regarding this topic.

Furthermore, we'd like to inform you about the current size of the Galaxy on Fire 2 HD installation. As some players have already noticed, you currently have to download almost 660 MB of data from the App Store. This amount of files is based on different textures, we have added for the different devices, so that every player can benefit from the best graphic experience so far.

Meanwhile, I'm just left thinking "god, that was a waste of ten bucks."

Dang, too bad. I will stay away. It is probably a great game, but if you've played one you've played them all.

Actually no. Don't go think all Kairosoft games are the same. Maybe you're aware but let me tell you that just in case you didn't know or was misinformed. Kairosoft has been making a certain number of base models and then they re-use that model multiple times. Even the "re-used" ones aren't less of an original games than all those yearly sequels we see in the industry and at least, Kairosoft don't really make sequels anyways, each game is having its own perks and subject. Its just that they specialise in strategy games.

Anyways, there's the Game Dev Story model (Gran Prix using it too). Pocket League is a bit more unique but somehow similar. Those are quite pure strategy games. Then you have the Hot Springs Story model (Academy, Edo Towns, Dungeon story using it). Those are strategy games but at the same time they are city/community builders. They play very differently than Game Dev Story. There are also unique games like Epic Astro Story that is a more advance sim-like and the uber excellent MegaMall Story wich is completely unique and 2D point of view ala Tiny Tower.

Never played Magic before...but it seems pretty fun. The app seems pretty high quality and I like how I can actually see all the details on the new iPad.

Just went through the tutorial and 2 campaign missions. The gameplay feels a lot slower than Ascension, but it's probably cause I'm reading all the cards and pop up tips.

Looking forwards to spending more time tomorrow playing it some more...

Hahah no I just had the same experience really blatantly when going from Magic into Ascension. Ascension is just really snappy. Magic is slow, especially selecting cards to attack.

Grim Jogger is now FREE.

Thought this was rubbish. I can't work out why if my front guy misses something, a guy at the back is killed by it. It's taking my lives away at random through no fault of my own. Far harder to see what's coming than a game of this type requires, too.

Really disappointed, I remember loads of people raving about it way back.

Question about this game. How does your deck building work? Do they start you off with a basic deck and then you use IAP to purchase boosters? Or is it like the GBA Yu-Gi-Oh games where you would play a AI opponent (within or outside the realms of any story) and if you win you get coins to use towards purchasing booster packs? Or is it a combination of both?

There are 10 pre built decks and you can unlock a few cards within each deck. You unlock by playing the game, I don't think there's IAP involved.

This. But understand that unlocking a full deck is...tedious. If there's 10 cards in a deck you can unlock, you have to win with it 10 times [at least that's how it feels]. With a good number of decks available, you'll be working for quite some time to unlock everything.

Mutant Storm looks good, anyone have impressions? I've been playing Ballistic SE, also interested in Inferno. Dusted off my Fling pads.

Did you ever play it on the xbox years ago? it's a really good twin stick shooter and has good replay value trying to unlock all the belt levels, it also get's very hard on black belting every stage so no idea how that transfers well to a touch screen, a lot of the later stages are filled with enemies and bullets.

Oh, good. That's what I wanted. I wanted to play, but didn't really want to spend money on a new hobby.

Only problem is that customization is severely limited. They could at least allow you to fully customize your deck, instead of being limited to predetermined decks. Not sure why this isn't a possibility.

This time around there are 30 cards to unlock per deck. So they are the most customizable they've ever been.

As far as I can tell they don't want to have a full deck builder in DOTP because A) it would make the game much more difficult to approach for new people if they would go online and get smashed by perfectly tuned custom decks and B) it would be competing more directly with Magic Online.

I can say zero doubt that this is why they don't allow you to fully build and customize decks. I prefer it that way, though - decks are built and designed to be competitive and playable against one another. The sole reason I can't get into CCG/TCG's in physical form is because it just costs SO damn much to build a competitive deck.

Hmm, I guess 30 cards isn't too bad.
