The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

I understand it if an App has been removed by Apple for legitimate reasons.

But otherwise it completely goes against the whole point of iCloud. I don't want 200 Apps on my computer, but Apple allowing this shit means I have to have these hard copies of them.

I wonder how that works. I mean, in terms of 'iCloud', I think of that a little differently than the purchased list. If I have a backup of a removed app stored in my iCloud, can it be restored? I've never tried. I think of the Purchased list as more of access to the store itself (just a way to keep from paying twice), which makes sense if something was pulled from the store. Still sucks, yeah, but I still never considered it "my backup".

I'm heading out to pick up an iPad today and a few itunes cards. I think I've narrowed down a few games worth picking up but are there any big ones I'm missing? I've been out of the iOS scene since the iPhone 3G

Tiny Tower
Pocket Planes
Scribblenauts
Infinity Blade (Should I get 1 or 2 or both?)
Galaxy on Fire 2
I think you should pick up the free issue of Swipe on the iPad. It works as a nice little buyer's guide.

BUT, here's some games I really enjoyed on the iOS! They're not in any order. Really.

Puzzle Juice is one of my favorite handheld games ever. It's frantic, it demands all parts of your brain, and it's extremely satisfying. Also it's a word game that allows any word. Any.

Angry Birds: Space is great. For obvious reasons. Haters be damned, it's a fine cheap puzzle game.

Grove Coaster and Space Invaders: Infinity Gene are both great games. If you are a fan of Rez, get them both. Grove Coaster is a tapping based rhythm game while Infinity Gene is like a stylish dissection of the shump genre.

Mage Gauntlet, definitely. It's the best Hack n' Slash on the market. An ode to Secret of Mana.

Avernum: Escape of the Pit and Avadon: The Black Fortress are both very well done, and well written RPGs in the style of Baldurs Gate.

Ascension is a great little card game that's easy to pick up but difficult to master. If you ever wonder what those greasy kids are up to with their Magic the Gathering, check it out.

Bubble Pig is a great platformer, lots of charm. Reminds me of something the "Wario" team at Nintendo would make.

Chaos Rings: Omega, 1, and 2 are excellent RPGs from Squaresoft. Possibly one of the better RPG series they put out recently. Reminds me of Final Fantasy 8 in style and tone, which is a good thing.

Swordigo is a great game, reminds me a lot like Zelda 2. While it's ugly, it's one of the more satisfying games on the iOS in the traditional handheld sense. Y'know, it's like something Nintendo might make (minus the fugly graphics.)

Trainyard EX is another one of my favorite Puzzle Games. It's been around forever, but they're awesome teasers.

Terra Noctis is a great "Yoshi's Island" style platformer. Although recent updates may have made it a little buggier.

100 Rogues is a nice timewaster. It's fun picking up one disposable hero and seeing how far you can get him.

Junk Jack is your go-to Minecraft/Terraria style game. Good stuff, well made.

Gunman Clive is a nice little, uh, Megaman clone I guess? Looks good, sounds good. And it's a platformer where you get to have full control of your character (which is sadly rare!)

And uh, well. I could go on forever. But these are some good titles worth checking out.

edit: And any Kairosoft game, really. Some say "Should I get this game of theirs, or that?" And you could really just pick one blindfolded and sink a dumb amount of hours into it.

double edit: Out of both Infinity Blades, get the second one.

I can't beat the first boss in gunman Clive because of dog shit controls. Every time he jumps at me I can't move and I incorrectly duck 50% of the time

You're all welcome. I still have quite a few more codes thanks to a Starbucks hook up. I'll be spacing them out through the day. Anyone know how to get a tag under your name? I want to be known as "Lord of the Code!!"...

One does not simply request a tag...

I have to agree with WoolyNinja on this one - game controlled like a dream for me. I only recently deleted it fro my device, but I ran through it two or three times...LOVED that game.

I don't know if it has been mentioned yet, but Tower of Fortune is currently free. It is similar to King Cashing.

Wow, this game is really great.

I didn't realize
that once you're dead, you start all the way over. All my hard work. I could not believe it when it happened. Now that I've started over, it's even better now that I know one slip up can mean doom.

What a shit game.

You can't even buy airports or new planes or anything. Gross.

Lol... so I did the same thing to Pocket Planes as I did to Tiny Tower... deleted it after a few addicting hours. I mean, it's not a bad game or anything, but the progression is just so tediously slow, yet requires constant attention. No thanks.

Perfect description. The game is actually perhaps more interesting than TT, but you can quickly get a sense the pacing is basically the same. Having already did my time with TT, I only needed about a half hour with this one to realize it was a quality app I had no real interest in. It's a glorified exercise in watching paint dry.

I find Pocket Planes far less interesting than Tiny Tower. Just as boring except you don't have a new store to look forward to. I was always excited to find out what the store would be next. Pocket Planes is just insufferable. Every five minutes having to do things that do very little for you. Blech.

I'm convinced that they only care about things that infringe upon the apple brand. Anything else: fuck it let's go!

Yup.

With some of the crap that gets through you have to give ZERO fucks about quality. Either that or they're fucking morons or think it's funny.

edit: that piece of shit developer has a load of other scam apps

I own both an iPhone and an iPad. Is it possible for me to "synchronize" game saves between them using Cloud, so I can play a game on one device, and then resume where I left off on another?

If not, then is there at least a way I can transfer game saves via iTunes, so if I've started a game on one device, but decide that I'd rather make the other device my primary method of playing that game, I don't need to start over again?

Sorry for quoting this, but I'm really hoping to get an answer.

Automatic iCloud save syncing is possible but requires the app itself to support it. You'll have to find out if this works or not on a case by case basis, unfortunately.

Syncing to iTunes -should- sync your data too, but I'm not totally sure (I use only a single device and ditched iTunes after a sync literally deleted half the apps on my iPad). Even if true, no idea if saves can migrate from one device type to another. EDIT: From the sounds of the posts below this one, iTunes might not preserve your saves at all.

Whale Trail is one game that supports save game syncing between devices. I have an iPhone and iPad, so when does this syncing happen? Can I play on one, and then an hour later play on the other? How does iCloud know which save game to overwrite?

Ok I just tested it out... Save sync is immediate. I bounced back and forth between the devices. That's the coolest thing I've ever seen.

Now where is a list of all the games that support this feature? According to my iCloud backup list, it's not very many.

are most games playable on the 8gb variant of the ipod touch or would it be better getting the 32gb

You will run out of space surprisingly quickly with 8GB. It is closer to 6.4 GB of actual free space. Games will perform the same no matter which variant you buy, though.

8gb with todays big hit apps would not last long, you can back up saves with some pc software but remember when you remove an app from your device the save goes with it unless it uses online saving.

Worth paying like £70 more for the 32gb IMO, my 2g touch was 8gb and even a few years ago it would fill quickly, I currently have a 32gb 4th gen and glad that I did.

but since buying my ipad 3 my touch is hardly touched, lolz

Yeah, I can attest to that. I'm constantly having to erase stuff to make room for new stuff. It's mainly an issue when there are games I really like that I have gotten far in but haven't finished yet. Waking Mars is a good example. I'm a good ways into the game, but I put it on the back burner for a bit for other games. Thing is, it's a pretty big game, so having it just sit there means I'm losing space for a handful of other apps. I could back it up with iExplorer, but it's a hassle, and if the developers update the game between now and the time I decide to paste the save back to my phone, the old save could screw things up.

If you can swing it, definitely get the bigger phone. Mine was one of the freebie deals with my provider, which is the only reason I went with it.

I'm fine with Pocket Planes. I put it in the same folder as Carc, Acension and some other async games and just make moves when I make moves in the other games. I like it. Oddly calming.

It's been that way for a long time (if not the entire time). It's terrible but it makes sense if you look at it from the standpoint of games Apple pulled due to inappropriate content, etc.

In a situation like Let's Golf 2, don't be mad at Apple. Be mad at Gameloft, as they remove the game, not Apple. And they remove it so you're forced to grab the newest version of their game with tons of crappy IAP, etc.

EA is also bad with that sort of thing (see Tetris on iOS).

Still is Apple fault because it means they actually ALLOW publishers to actually do that.

On a side note... what was the big deal about Tetris adding IAPs that got everyone in an uproar?

The reason why I asked, is because I picked up the ipad version the last time it went on sale, and for the most part it plays like tetris should. Yes, there's IAPs, but they aren't necessary and completely unintrusive. Yea, there's a subscription payment to get in game currency to unlock these items, but again... unnecessary.

The one-touch mode is actually a decent addition to Tetris for a touch screen... and I've come to like it. If there's anything to criticize about Tetris on iOS is how barebones it is. For the non-sale price, all you get is marathon mode and "Galaxy" mode, which requires you to clear out the field.

The big deal is that they deleted the other version entirely for people who already purchased it. If they didn't have it backed up it is gone.

Project 83113 went FREE.
Defo worth a look.

Why would they go free so soon?
I'm wondering this too, it hasn't even been one month since release. I had it appshopped and I was surprised when I saw it was free already.

edit: looks like it's because they were featured on iTunes as what's "sizzzlin hot", but it sounds more like an opportunity to get some sales. Heh, not complaining.

got a couple of free codes for Where's My Water from starbucks. thought i'd post them here so they wont go to waste
