The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

Is there a good amount of people playing Magic 2013 online? The free version is fun but I don't think I'll get it if the multiplayer community isn't there.

The levels are so short that I feel like checkpoints would be borderline cheating. I'm really not sure how the controls could have been done better, aside from supporting a physical controller. (I forget, does Clive support moving controls to the middle rather than the bottom for handheld iPad users?)

Gunman Clive is supported by the icade controller. Shame it's not showing up as free for me.

Bought Asphalt 7. Eh, it's okay. For $1 it's worth it.

The cars look great, better than in Real Racing 2, but the backgrounds are PS2 quality at best. Kinda laughed when I read IGN claiming it was 360 quality stuff. Not even close.

Anyway, gameplay is fun, if unpolished as expected. The drifting mechanics, while nowhere near as well crafted as in Ridge Racer, at least scratch that itch until Namco bothers to release a proper iOS RR.

On another subject, I'm trying to get into Plants vs Zombies. I'll, be honest, I don't see the appeal. Well, to be fair I CAN see the appeal, it's just that the Bloodshow games are so much better to me. More challenging, deeper, art is better, graphics are better, card collecting (always fun), building your deck is more fun, etc.

Also, rocking some Bullet Time. Fun Diablo style shooter, freemium done right.

Tone Sphere ($0.99) is out, for all those rhythm gamers in tha house

Daaaaamn this is one sexy rhythm game!

It's beautiful and fun, and I really like the music. There's a ton of songs. The graphics are crisp on my "new iPad", and I love how not only the background changes, but the notes you are supposed to hit move around too. A pleasant surprise for sure.

I am just so happy at how polished this is.

Q:Will I need to purchase songpacks in order to fully enjoy the game?
A:All songs are included in the app and you can play everything without any DLC purchases. Additional songs are going to be updated as well.

kingdom rush should only be played as: HD version. I can't see it playing on the smaller screen at all

I played it on a 24" screen, and don't think there's anything that a bit of zooming and panning can't solve. It's not like there's not 100s of tower defense games or other games that involve selecting unique spots on the screen. It'll essentially look like watching a 480p youtube video in a small window on a desktop, only on an iPhone's 320 dpi screen it will be much more detailed than on a 96dpi desktop screen (the iPhone can almost display as much detail as the iPad 1). Besides, the iPhone/iPod is a huge factor in revenue for TD games I think. I wouldn't be surprised if the iPhone version surpasses the iPad's revenue in under a few weeks.

This looks awesome

Those graphics look lovely but jesus fuck that music sounds bad. Why can't someone make one of these games for people other than jpop nutcases?

It's right up my alley. Really impressed so far. I have 21 songs, and I don't even know if I've unlocked everything yet.

And holy crap at the Negator track. Where did this music come from? It's so awesome!

The way the notes are lined up is really like putting on a performance. Each track is like a mini-music video, as everything in the background is choreographed to the song. And the difficulty is really ramping up the further I get. I got all perfects on one of the earlier ones, so you get an extra star for that. I will be playing this for a long time.

I am just saying wow. Enough talk, back to playing.

Can't believe this is $0.99.

Tone Sphere for 99 cents seems like a steal if it has that much content. Tried it for a bit and the harder songs on normal are actually pretty hard. My only complain so far is that there's no indication to tell you if you got a perfect/good/bad on a note.

Beat Gunman Clive, pretty fun. Hard at some parts but not infuriatingly so, and nothing that takes too many retries. Eventually had to lock the position of the d-pad because I was crouching by accident way too much (yay for options).

Funny story: I put the graphics on "advanced" (iPhone 4) from the get go and played like that until the first boss. I kept dying at that fight and thinking "wtf, this is hard as shit", but then I recalled about the settings and lowered the rendering. The framerate got glorious and I beat the boss on the first try. It was dumb of me to think the game was actually supposed to run like that, but in the end it worked as training because when I played it in the proper framerate I was so skillful. :lol

You lost me there...

You don't want async in games because you personally like to have people there with you. Nintendo doesn't put online it it's games because they think everyone has someone to play with. The mentality that people will be better off without an online option is a step backwards. Every multiplayer game should have async play or some form of online system.

What's the best podcast that deals with iOS games?

Touch Arcade?

No.

Loud, unentertaining, uninformed. Bad. Really bad.

Edit: Decided to listen to it on the train the other week because they had Zach Gage on. The entire time the host yelled, called everyone, "My man," over and over, made a constant, unfunny joke about Zach Gage not having a company name and didn't ask him about the games he was actually working on (which are many). It was offensive, probably the worst gaming-related podcast I've ever heard, which is saying something because I'll download and listen to anything while I do housework if they're interviewing someone I like.

does anyone remember Capcom announcing they were remaking the rest of the Phoenix Wright games in HD and releasing them on iOS? whatever happened to that

I decided to listen to the latest one just to get a sample, right off the bat on the introductions, Eli Hodapp says he's the guy that everyone hates, and that Toucharcade is known for irritating people because of their reviews, even a shitfarter reference.. Well, they pretty much said what I think of TA in the first 150 seconds of the show. Impressive.

Damn, that's (Kingdom Rush) addicting. Played through the first five or six missions. Gonna stop, though. Don't wanna spoil too much.

Actually, you can tell by the combo number. If it's flashing, you got a Perfect, and if it's half-transparent you got a Way Off. It's just there if you get a Great.

Actually no, I dont want async because i preffer real time play like in carcassonne. With async i lose track of things and dont enjoy them as much. I want online, but not async online is basically my point. Or at least the option to choose between async and real time...

How does this compare to other somewhat similar games on iOS like Cytus (pretty good), OSU (bad), or Rerave (so-so)? Eh, it's a whole dollar... I'll find out myself.

rhythm games that don't follow the beat of the music seem pointless, that trailer for tone sphere seemed to indicate it was one of those games

I feel the exact same way. It feels wrong for an iPhone version to even exist...

I don't understand this at all really... from reading impressions of the people who beta tested it almost all said it performs excellent and is extremely fun, and an incredibly polished port.

I haven't tried ReRave, but I have a hard time understanding how osu! Is worse than Cytus. If anything, Cytus is bottom of the barrel on my list because of its rather severe timing issues.

It follows the beat just fine. Actually, it does a better job of syncing to the music than most music games n the market from the five songs I've played so far, though judgement is a bit lenient.

I could do with something new to play this weekend, whilst I'm stuck at a wedding.

Anyone got any suggestions for something 'grindey', preferably with XP and loot? I was playing (and enjoying) Heroes Call on iPad but I'm pretty much done with that one and I won't get a chance to transfer my save to my phone anyway.

I'm not too fussed about the style of the game, I just want something quick and simple that I can grind away at, preferably working towards some larger goal. Any suggestions appreciated.

(grinding away at something quick and simple is also my dating technique)
ArcherCat

You're a cat, you have to shoot things, it requires a bit of strategy with your skills. It has random loot, enchanting and crafting. Really stupidly simple but I've put about ten hours into it mainly through grinding to get better gear.

Also it's free.

Finally! I played until half of the hardcore mode stages back when it was free but the pause bug turned me off a bit on doing 100%. After the patch I kept meaning to go back to it and now it's done.

This (and any of the other similar spike placements) was a bitch!

Took the top spot in original mode BP2 Black Label with 884mil behind one person with an impossible score. Game could definitely use some tweaks: it's pretty easy to get a really high score on even novice difficulty. I got over 600mil on Normal, maybe it needs a separate leaderboard for Hell. There's barely any incentive to play Hell difficulty, which is a shame. I think it's because the scoring system doesn't scale much differently with less bullets like past games, but this kind of makes the leaderboards useless.

Are you me? I am going to a wedding now and just downloaded ArcherCat and will be bored and will play it.

Yeah, Cytus's timing window is quite generous, but I still enjoyed it. My problem with OSU! relates to your other response. Playing OSU felt like tapping random plain dots on a plain screen while decent to bad music happened to be playing in the background. Good base mechanics, but OSU has no character and the tapping has little connection to the music. Maybe it's improved since I played the game. (Rerave has a similar dull, no style experience.)

You're being pretty kind to Cytus there; it's not only generous, but more often than not just plain off-sync. And so far, they seem more interested in putting on concerts in Taiwan and promoting obscure earbud brands than they are fixing their game.

osu!stream might be minimalist but it's clear a lot of effort was put into both making it accessible and providing a challenge. (Being the only music game on the platform I've tried that is willing to fail you mid-song helps.). It definitely screams hobby project given the somewhat lacking genre variety in what little music is available, but it's a solid game that goes out of its way to avoid compromising gameplay for questionable stylistic choices.
