The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

Posted this in the Cave thread but I know there are some shmup fans here as well:

Looks like Bug Princess 2 Black Label is out tomorrow (June 23) in the US. $13.99. Lots of IAP upgrades/unlocks, assuming leaderboards will be separate like Blissful Death.

Easily my favorite Cave shmup, so this will probably be worth every penny for me. Just hope the slowdown is somewhat accurate. Also don't forget Boss Rush Mode with bosses from the original Mushi, that could be interesting.

edit: I'm hoping to go nuts on this game and get as high on the leaderboards as possible in the first 24 hours only to watch my mediocre scores be crushed as more people come along. I'm ZethGAF on GC if anyone wants to compare Cave scores.

What's in this for me if I have Bug Princess 2 original version?

For the main mode, here are the changes between 1.5 and Black Label, written by EOJ (seems a bit incomplete - doesn't mention that Original scoring gem switching is every 500 instead of every 3000, and a noise was added telling you to switch shot types. A bit too busy to find a better one right now). It's halfway toward being a completely different game, basically. Also, this version adds a Boss Rush mode, which seems to include bosses from the first Bug Princess as well (probably IAP).

Still not a fan of this being a separate app - I think making this IAP for Bug Princess 2 would have been better, especially for devices where storage space is at a premium.

Black Label is great. All the modes are noticeably different from the 1.5 modes. Original is a lot more fun in Black Label for me.

I think the gameplay style works really well with the iOS touch controls. The super smooth and fast swiping movements you tend to do on iOS shmups are perfect for Original mode especially. All the point-blanking and shedding will be really fun IMO. But I've been super addicted to it on 360 recently (super LTTP), so I'm more enthusiastic than most.

Still have a few dollars left on my iTunes account, so I'll be putting it toward Black Label tomorrow. Pumped.

On a similar note, I've (finally) been going through Bug Panic. While basic, it's solid, and plenty cute. Wouldn't mind seeing them tackle another original game for iOS.

Yeah, Tone Sphere seems aight but not it just doesn't have much punch to it... I'm not feeling the rythms, the music isn't that great and while the framerate and responsiveness is very good, it just doesn't give you the right measure of audiovisual feedback to make you feel like you're doing much.

I could do with something new to play this weekend, whilst I'm stuck at a wedding.

Anyone got any suggestions for something 'grindey', preferably with XP and loot? I was playing (and enjoying) Heroes Call on iPad but I'm pretty much done with that one and I won't get a chance to transfer my save to my phone anyway.

I'm not too fussed about the style of the game, I just want something quick and simple that I can grind away at, preferably working towards some larger goal. Any suggestions appreciated.

(grinding away at something quick and simple is also my dating technique)

Pocket Planes

Ah, shit, of course. I do have that (and F1 GP Story) on my phone and in my backlog but I was hoping for something a little less 'managementy' and a little more 'actiony'. Great suggestion though, I'll definitely bear it in mind.

Oh, and no Tower Defense games. I've played 'em all and Sentinel 3 is still the best.

play pocket planes, join #GAFAIR, we needs the pilots.

Price is right on this if you haven't played it (neither have I), but it seems to fit your request decently.

Yes! That's bang on, cheers.

I also remembered that I have a half-finished game of Puzzle Agent 2 going on and Minecraft: Pocket Edition which I haven't even touched yet. I'll make it through the weekend easily.

Wow, what's gotten into FreeMyApps lately? Must've racked up thousands of points in the last few days. Very welcome change. Finally got to cash out for some iTunes credit.

It looks like they've hooked up with the ad network that provides JunoWallet with apps. I wouldn't recommend JunoWallet though, they seem to give much less money per app and sometimes will prevent you from double-dipping on FreeMyApps.

I am truly enjoying The Act. It sounded gimmicky from the descriptions, but I bought it because of the animations. Well, their system works. It is like a Dragon's Lair with limited analog controls, and it feels for the first time like I am controlling this animated puppet.

Bought The Act, enjoyed the story, the animation & the Dragons Lair style gameplay. But 20 minutes later, I finished the game. WTF!? I love it but if you remove the mistakes made by the player & go through it perfectly, you can finish it in 10~15 minutes.

Got BP2 when it released, but honestly I haven't spent much time with it. I love all their shooters, but I think the BP games are on the lowest of my list of favorites. I still play the hell out of Deathsmiles, though, and DDP Resurrection gets a lot of play as well. I'll probably go back to BP2 -- heck, none of my Cave games are likely to ever be deleted from my phone -- but I doubt I'll invest in the Black Label version unless they offer it super cheap.

That's about how long Dragon's Lair takes as well though, isn't it?

Are there any like arcade gun shooting type games for iPad? I mean the kind of games you play in an arcade where you hold the gun, obviously no gun for iPad but whatever.

Thanks

I dont know if there are iPad versions but there are iPhone versions of some Time Crisis games as well as Silent Scope.

I also bought Yesterday on a whim. It is an adventure game and I think it was $5. Have played for probably twenty minutes.

Pros:
-Innovative design: Double tap in an area, your character simply appears there as an alternative to the regular single click movement.
-Inventory: In the first 3 screens there were like 5 items to get and use.
-Style: While it looks unpolished a bit, it has a comic book design that permeates everything from item descriptions, to loading a past file to the character conversations. I find it very compelling!

Cons:
- A bit unpolished. The characters are polygonal, and their facial animations range from passable to laughable.

These first twenty minutes make me want to delve deeper into this world. Best I can say so far!

So how does Yesterday runs on an iPad 2 ? Wanted to buy it on a Steam sale, but if it runs well ill just get the iOS version.

im still not sure why/how Namco hasnt cashed in on the point blank series on IOS. some times i dont think companies want the money. they just want to be hated.

Not a game and most likely only appealing to the other parents here, but a Reading Rainbow app for the iPad just got released.

The app is free, but works on a subscription model that gives you access to a 150 interactive books curated by LeVar Burton. The whole app is actually hosted by Burton. I haven't fired up the app yet, so no idea if it opens with the kick ass theme song.

Have it in Ipad3 and no complains at all. Even has a button you can click to show all the interactive areas on a a screen if you want, a la Simon the sorcerer. No more pixel hunting!

Rage is probably my favorite iOS shooter. It's an awesome arcade experience for your iDevice.

Free Gunman Clive, .99 Reckless Racing 2, Free League of Evil?

MADNESS

Downloaded Clive last night and erased it after a few minutes. It looks fantastic, runs smooth, and I guess the controls are doable. But something about the virtual joystick I couldn't get used to, and the lack of checkpoints ultimately ruined it for me. It's a neat take on Mega Man, but a little clumsy with virtual controls.

The levels are so short that I feel like checkpoints would be borderline cheating. I'm really not sure how the controls could have been done better, aside from supporting a physical controller. (I forget, does Clive support moving controls to the middle rather than the bottom for handheld iPad users?)

Lemme tell ya', "Zombie crisis 3d" is like House of the dead for your iDevice. It really is a quality shooter.
