Wada: No Final Fantasy VII Remake Until Original Has Been Topped

personally, i've accepted that a 1:1 remake of FF7 just wouldn't work, so at this point, i'd like to see 'em re-imagine it.

It's obvious they intend to use the remake of Final Fantasy VII and the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII as a re-launch and re-branding of Final Fantasy VII. They'll never publish a remake that looks and plays like a 1997's videogame.

it's not just looks that will be changed. the entire lighthearted/gamey tone of the original are going to have to change.

What's wrong with wanting to see a world that you remember fondly brought to life with new and improved, fresh coat of paint? I highly doubt anyone here is asking for VII to get remade with pretty graphics even if SE can't handle doing the original justice. No one wants FFVII: FFXIII.

But that's almost exactly what you'll get. The VII that Square-Enix seems to recall is very, very different from the one that was actually made.

Yeah Wada.Keep making XIII sequels and one day you'll surely reach that quality.

The key to sucess is obviously to milk your worst game ever until every last of your fans vomits when he/she hears the name Final Fantasy.

Does that mean they think XII or XIII topped X? I sure hope not, since technically the X remake is not really a remake...

They always have an excuse not remaking the game, first it was making HD towns is hard, now this. I'll probably be dead by the time they make it. I'm 35 this coming Monday.

This makes me very happy because it means as long as Wada is in charge he'll never figure out that 7 is one of the worst FFs. Now we never have to see a terrible remake.

FF VI was the peak for me for all the FF and it was better than FF VII. FF VII was good when it came out but I can see it as an overrated JRPG after all these years.

This

FFVII is one of the most overrated games in video game history, it's not THAT good. People need to remove their shitty nostalgia goggles.

That's a nice phrase, because I can change the game and it would still be shitty.

Remove FFVII, put Chrono Trigger/Cross there.

BUT DUDE,THEY WILL KEEP MAKING XIII SEQUELS!!! AREN'T YOU HAPPY???

I'm good with that. The 13 games are downright fun to play. If you look at the games strictly for the gameplay, 13 and especially 13-2 are wonderful games to play. Whether you think the stories ruin it (or think games don't have good stories in the first place so who cares) is a matter of opinion and will color your enjoyment obviously, but there is an audience out there that has no issue with 13 the way it is.

FF7 was legendary and amazing, but imo I think FF9 was actually a little better. Just say you do not have any interest in remaking FF7 and move on. I have a strong feeling that this game will never materialize even if all the Final Fantasies were vastly superior to it.

FFVII is still my favorite, it was my third FF when I was younger, after IV and VI, but I've just had more of a thing for mixing sci-fi and fantasy. I love IX and XII to death, but there were still certain things that I felt they lacked in comparison. I didn't like the SD whole-game form of IX and the ending bits were kind of messed up. XII would have really benefited from making anyone else the main character.

For the record I hate II, III, X, XIII and XIII-2.

I can fully admit it's partially because it was in the first 10 RPGs I've played, and whatnot, but I still play it once every few years and love it just as much. There are things in the plot that are just fairly unique compared to most other games.

But really fuck Final Fantasy, SMT forever. <3

They did, it was called IX.

Best first post I've seen in ages.

The only way a remake of FFVII could work:

Releasing it on 3DS. Improving the visuals just as much as they were improved in Zelda OoT 3DS, without loosing it's original charme, making it the definitive version of the game.

This "small" graphical overhaul would be perfectly justifiable in the eyes of the 3DS's power (people would be satisfied, the game would still look good, develpment cost would be reasonable)

11 Million sold no problem!

On home consoles it wouldn't work. People would demand too much from it visually, making it way too expensive. The game would loose it's charme, since every character would be a highly-detailed japanese supermodel, which would put too many die-hard fans off and lessen it's overall apeal.
Another good thing about the OG FFVII was it's blockiness and moderate japanese-que character models, which appealed to a wide audiance.

IF they do decide to go the Zelda OoT 3DS root, it would look too out-dated in the light of the competing HD games. This wouldn't be a problem on 3DS.

I hope this does not happen. Personally, I rather have it on consoles with a fairly large budget and in HD on a big screen. Why not at least have it released as a PSN or XBox Live title if they do not want to invest into a high-budget PS3 or XBox game? They would get their money back since IMO it is guaranteed to sell. That wouldn't be too expensive if they went the downloadable route and it would definitely look and sound better than 3DS. The again I have a feeling that it would take literally 2 to 3 years to complete since they are working on other projects.

I agree with him. FFVII is still unmatched. The materia system, the story, the setting, the characters, the world map. All the following games failed at one of those things.

Personally, I think this is a great attitude.
It's obvious when talking about what 'tops' FFVII it concerns fanbase and whatnot, not necessarily quality of the game itself (which is largely subjective)
FFVII is by far the most popular FF to date, so if they want something that tops that then good luck to them

I guess this thread is full of hate and vitriol though because SE can do no right these days.

As this thread has (somewhat inevitably) become the what is everyone's favourite post VII-Final Fantasy thread I thought I'd add my two cents. The way I see it X suffers from shitty voice acting, XII collapses under the weight of its own ambition (the impersonal story-line is also jarring) and VIII has the vexing junction system. The flawless FF IX is surely the best.

does X really have shitty voice acting or is it just the hatred towards the laughter scene (which is supposed to be awkward) bubbling up again?

I'm curious to know: How old are those who think FF7 has been topped since its creation, versus those who do not?

26 and FF7 has been topped by every other FF made since then with the exception of 8 and 13.

Hell, FF10-2 is better than FF7.

Will any of us be alive by then?

FFVII is pretty much the pinnacle of JRPGs and none have even come close to matching its brilliance on all levels. love it or hate it, it's definitely the game any rpg developer would be proud of being a part of.

I'm sure they're very proud of it, but FF7 isn't even the best FF released on the PSX, much less the pinnacle of JRPGs. It was pretty for it's time and a lot of people who'd never heard of an RPG before played it because of that. It was surpassed in every way by FF9.

I'm 30 years old. I would say VI and VII were the peak of the series. VIII was unwieldy, IX carried on for too long, X was too linear, XI is good but I'm not an MMO fan, XII completely lost sight of what it was doing half-way through, and we all know what happened with XIII, XIV, and XIII-2.

Let's be honest though, love or hate FFVII, it would be good if they aimed to make that full of a final fantasy again. Proper character customization, towns, not towns with a single fucking shop NPC, that isn't what people meant when they said they wanted towns in FFXIII square.

Hell, the Last Remnant has a pretty big world and lots of towns, too bad the game did poorly and wasn't so awesome until PC.

How so?

Especially when compared to, say, FF8, which has actual traffic going around, or FF9, which goes out of its way to hide things on the world map.

I said "All the following games failed at one of those things." FF7 got all of them right.

FFIX is too slow to be better than VII.

VII IS one of the pinnacles of the series...and is the series' finest moment (though VI, IV and XII are my personal favourites), so I'd say Wada is at least partially right. Then again I don't really crave a FFVII remake. I crave new FF games that are of the quality of VII, etc.
