Wada: No Final Fantasy VII Remake Until Original Has Been Topped

Besides staring a Lulu's tits, because I mean who wouldn't, I don't remember him hitting on the others.

There's definite flirting going on. It might not be that strong, and sometimes it requires you to talk to Yuna/Lulu/Rikku multiple times, but it's there

Final Fantasy X better than VII?

I'm one of the few people who venomously hates Final Fantasy X that I rather play XIII than that monstrosity again. The only thing I love from FFX is the battle system, but everything else to me was a downgrade.

I know it's a very unpopular opinion, but I really do not like X except battle system and the entire OST.

X has Tidus, who is just some watered down version of Zidane but way more annoying. The romance in the game is also shit, nowhere did Tidus ever show a romantic interest in Yuna. The only part was the kiss, but I mean before that I never even saw him hit on her or anything and who's going to deny a hot girl a kiss? Seriously. Zidane made that shit clear from the first moment when he met Garnet. He's also a selfish little fuck. X was great, loved the gameplay, some characters are cool others aren't.

Even a watered-down version of Zidane would be better than Tidus. Tidus was more like a watered-down version of that hotdog-loving fucker from FF VIII, whatever his name was.

You and me both. The only things I liked about X were Auron, Lulu's tits and Rikku's ass. Otherwise I frankly think it's a mediocre game at best.

Zell. I mean yeah he wasn't great, but surely he wasn't that bad. What did he do to annoy you so much

There's not a single specific thing, it was more that Tidus was just herp derp dumb as a brick and annoying. But at least he was far better than Wakka, which is seriously my most hated character in any video game I've ever played.

FFIX was better, hell, FFX was better. FFXII would've been better if it hadn't lost steam in the last quarter.

FFVII is overrated, and this is coming from somebody who played through it when it first came out before he had any idea it was as hyped as it was.

I see lot of people shitting on FFVII. Some need to replay this game. But then again I guess it's ok, the series has the most divided fanbase due to each game a different game. I love them all for being unique experiences.

I'm 24 and FFVII has it's own special place in my heart, like the other entries.

P.S. That's my second post in Gaf, so thanks for having me :D

They did, it was called IX.

I don't know about you, but I'm not fond of overtly religious douchebag sports jock bros. The fact that John Dimaggio voiced such an awful character just made it hurt even more :(

I hated all that 'Praise be to Yevon' shite. I guess they wanted to show how deeply ingrained the whole religious culture was in X's society, but it didn't change the fact that it was annoying as anything. There's probably little that irritates me more than religious fanatics, and that's coming from a Muslim

I don't see how Tidus was similar to Zidane or Zell in any way, those two are very upbeat and positive characters while Tidus is an incredibly whiny and annoying crybaby with huge daddy issues. Worst FF protagonist ever.

Excellent second post if you ask me :3

That's actually pretty clever on Wada's part.
Admitting they can't make a better game than FFVII is like admitting that they aren't able to make a proper remake.
So nothing new until their japanese teams get their act together.

FFIX >>>> 99% of other games released >>> Other Final Fantasy Games >>>>> Chocobo Racing >>>> Final Fantasy XIII

Boy, now you know what the atheists must feel like.

Mostly similar to Zell in that both were shitty, annoying characters that kept harping on about Shit No One Cares About™ (hotdogshotdogshotdogsimmagofightbrohotdogzzzzz vs daddydaddydaddydaddyblitzballdaddy)

Honestly I liked Wakka because outside of religious stuff he was pretty chill and funny. It was easier for me to ignore his flaws than it was Tidus who would never shut up about his dad and was just whiny and selfish all the damn time.

Is the window closing for the FF7 remake? The people who care about such things are older and that style of gameplay isn't that popular anymore.

I personally think Square made better games, much better games since, but none of them have the cachet of FF7. I think that is partly a result of just right place right time. The game got tons of attention because of Square's move to Sony, the PSX audience was exploding, and it was a huge big budget game marketed perfectly.

Point is, people remember it so fondly in part because of the circumstances around it, and that can't be replicated.

FF VII is the most popular one. Of course most people on GAF say all the other ones are better.

I'm actually ok with people saying 9 or 6 is better, but XII* or even X? Please.

*and I absolutely loved FF12

X-2 is better in every way than FFVII. I'm not even joking when I say it's my second favorite FF.

FFVII is one of the most overrated games in video game history, it's not THAT good. People need to remove their shitty nostalgia goggles.

Nostalgia googles or not, FFVII was extremely daring for its time, and in fact, it pionered and used some narrative devices yet to be replicated in JRPGs, let alone in the final fantasy saga. I also cannot hate a game where the main character is a terrorist, the villain a war hero, and your love interest dies during the course of it.

In terms of reception and overall impact FFVII hasn't been topped. It was the game that really broke JRPGs internationally, so I guess what Wada is saying is that they need to salvage FF's reputation as the best-in-class going forwards, before they fall back and try to recreate the big success that started it all.

I agree with him.

Boy, now you know what the atheists must feel like.

Yep. Sure I'm a Muslim, but like anything else, I always try to look at everything from different viewpoints. I fully understand where atheists are coming from.

But that's a whole other discussion and I'd rather not derail the thread P:

So he's gonna remake the game when it's surpassed? ... For the sheer pleasure of making a game that isn't the top of its genre?

Are you stupid, Wada?

I guess we will never see a proper remake then as it doesn't seem like they will be capable of making newer FFies as big any time soon.

They topped 7 with the very next installment. And then the one after that. Anyway in order to top 7 now they need to remember or figure out why people used to love the series. They don't seem to know anymore.

Surely, I'm not the only one, after 11 pages in (haven't read them all), that realizes that the only think Wada is trulyb(and subtly) saying, is that the FF's quality went downhill in the last years and he hopes for it to get back?

Wada admitted that at present, the company is not making Final Fantasy games that exceed the quality of FFVII.

In other words, he doesn't wants the current develoment teams to touch a FFVIIr unless they prove to be good enough for it. Right?

X-2 is better in every way than FFVII. I'm not even joking when I say it's my second favorite FF.

Again. It's unfair and stupid to compare and judge a 15 years old game to newer games. But I have to agree that the battle system in FFX2, is ATB as far as it can ever go.

Versus XIII. It will be the best RPG of all time.

Believe

I want to believe, but if no TGS 2012 showing, my faith in it coming out this gen diminishes, though it would make a pretty sweet launch title for next-gen systems too I'm sure.

Also, as much as I love FFVII, I don't want a remake, I just want new experiences that have the PS1-level of world map exploration, character customization and the likes.

22, VII being my first proper FF. Yet I feel VI, IX, XII are all better than VII. Plus Tactics and Mystic Quest (Yea, I said it!) are also better. That's not to say that VII isn't awesome though, replaying it ATM.

Final Fantasy Tactics is objectively better than any mainline FF anyway, so whatever....

Anyway, just for shits and giggles, every RPG released on current gen consoles by Square-Enix, internally developed titles bolded:

Final Fantasy XI (360)
Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors (Wii)
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon (Wii)
Infinite Undiscovery (360)
The Last Remnant (360, PC, PS3)
Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope (360, PS3)
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (Wii)
Final Fantasy XIII (360, PS3)

Nier (360, PS3)
Final Fantasy XIV (PC)
Final Fantasy XIII-2 (360, PS3)

Are you sure you want this company as it is now anywhere near a FFVII HD remake?

That's what I think Wada is saying. People are just sprouting FFIX, FFVI, etc, because they have rightfully forgotten the existence of many of the recent FF games.

Wada admitted that at present, the company is not making Final Fantasy games that exceed the quality of FFVII.
FFVI, FFIX, FFX, etc, were not made "recently".

FF11 is the most profitable FF game of all time.

I wasn't saying anything about the quality or profitability of FFXI but I doubt it made more money than the PC and especially PS2 version of the game.

It's just that their output has gotten way worse over the years with prolonged dev cycles and less than stellar technology. They haven't taken that jump into the HD generation just yet and it shows in their games.

Do you really want to remember some of the ones past X? Let's be honest now.
FFVIII was the biggest mess, but it still had more charm and quality points than FFXIII by far. And outside of the core mechanics of the battle system, I can't see where it was relevantly worse. FFIX had a really-slow paced battle system, but it was overall a very complete game.

After FFX, FFX-2 offered cool gameplay at the expense of everything else. FFXIII-2 was more or less the same. FFXII was more or less the same, but its gameplay was quite dividing. And FFXIII scrapped its own gameplay at the expense of an even worse story.

And FFXIV started as a huge failure.

Yes, Wada is right, and this is probably one of the best things he could have said as SE's President. It shows he's aware that the quality of recent titles hasn't been as high as what we'd expect from the creators of FFVII.
