I don't understand Nintendo at all. They could have easily won over the Vita fans and monopolized the portable market with three minor changes...

1. A second analogue nub
2. Improved speakers
3. Improved camera

Instead they opt to let the Vita retain its edge.

I don't think any of those 3 changes would have affected the future of the Vita in any way

1. Wouldnt be enough to win over a Vita fan. They already have that. In fact they have better. They have actual sticks.

2. We don't know that they aren't.

3. Gotta be honest, never used the cameras on my gaming handhelds and I dont see a reason to start. My iPhone takes amazing pictures. My 3DS? No idea.

With Vita sales the way they are they're not a large enough group to win over. Worse yet, with how low sales are right now I actually half expect at least 50% of them have a 3DS anyway, myself included.

... And the 3DS already has better cameras I believe while the speakers are a moot point if you plug in headphones, and most likely they ARE better and it's just hard to tell in a crowded area, the DSi XL had better speakers afterall.

I thought the cameras were the same...?

Ooooh baby. I can't remember if I've ever been this excited for a handheld before.

Barely played my DS (got it when it first came out, played it for like a month - haven't touched it since), don't have a 3DS and have only played it at demo kiosks.

So basically, when I get the 3DSXL I have a good 5+ year library to engross myself in on a huge screen, or screenS i should say.

Can't wait!

For all the good that edge is doing the Vita...

I'll take a blue one. I'm tired of plain old black and white, I need some color in my life yo.

Oh my nuggets, that looks incredible. The wait for this to hit NA is going to be tough!

Man, that metallic look is so nice, too. Can't wait to see what the blue looks like. And dat screen... Maybe I'm saying this because I already have a Vita and it's not exactly new to me, but I think this looks far sexier than Sony's handheld, by a good margin. And I absolutely love my Vita.

But the XL... Ugh, so beautiful. I need one now.

Put my Purple 3DS up for sale on Craigslist today.

It was fun while it lasted, haha.

I get the impression the 3DS XL exists because Nintendo knee-jerk reacted to the Vita before everyone knew that the Vita was going to be a worldwide disaster. I don't really see any other reason for its existence at this point. I'm glad it exists, because I don't personally like the size of the 3DS screens, but this still feels like an odd move.

I'd do the same, but Nintendo being Nintendo means I can't since it would mean I'd lose the 40 dollars of eshop credit I have and the 3 games I already downloaded.

I think they are holding off on White and Black in the US because when Black and White 2 Come out, they are going to come out with a Special 3DSXL Bundle that comes preloaded with AR Searcher and Pokedex Pro.

I'll probably hold off for that, and that's probably exactly what they'll do.

Red/Blue sort of makes sense launching on the same day as a new 2D Mario. I don't think a 2-3 month wait for black/white is going to kill off Nintendo's chances of attracting older audiences.

I think the price drop is more likely linked to that, and that was the shot in the arm it needed, along with making the Vita not look as amazing of a value. If anything I think it might be just the growing prevalence of larger screens and possibly the desire to improve the 3D effect. I was afraid it'd be limited to a small screen, but if it can extend to a big one like that afterall then I think it'd be more comfortable for 3D gaming period.

I refused to buy things on the eshop because they're nontransferable, so that's not an issue for me. :-P

maybe it's in order to attract more western gamers, which usually have larger hands.

having a hard time gaming on my tiny-ass 3DS right now knowing the superior version isnt far off!

The talk of some sort of filter has me worried. I definitely don't want anything like that with 3DS games.

still feels like speculation though, doesnt it? i mean, didnt things look different on the DSi XL? thats what im gathering from the few screens we got going.

If Nintendo doesn't do this I'm almost positive Nyko will make it. Their Circle Pad Pro + battery pack solution comes out in October.

i wonder how that'll look/feel. gotta make it huge, with the triggers and all.

Basically I'm waiting for more hands on impressions before I believe it has some kind of filter. I still think it could be larger pixels that are still smaller then the DSi XL's pixels giving this weird impression of a filter.

yeah, this said it better.

i don't think they have much to do with Vita's troubles right now, but hat doesnt look like it'dve done much to me.
1) practically no games so far are using it (for better or worse)
2) what
3) the camera does suck but is that a feature that gets used a lot? it struck me as the mic last gen, i kinda forget its there and so do most devs i think

that is so bad it is pretty much worthless :/
Not really, theyre only gonna use as much pixels as the screen supports(and the screen is very low resolution). For example webcams arent gonna be taking 5 megapixel pictures because that would be useless for the most part(1080p is only 2mp)

We also have yet to see how a CPP for 3DS XL will look/work, assuming there even IS one. Hopefully if so it can be integrated more naturally or at least more comfortably, and not depend on its own triple AAAs.

If the good impressions keeps comming (especially about the better 3D effect and better viewing angle), and if it's easy to port your eshop games, I'll gladly sell my old 3DS and get an XL. I really love my DSi XL. It's a shame that they haven't put a second circle pad though.

Looking at the materials, I wouldn't be surprised if the 3DS XL was cheaper to manufacture than the 3DS.

Lol, u so crazy...

If I had a Vita, I wouldn't get a 3DS XL for any of the reasons you stated there. They are pretty bad reasons.

I hate when nintendo and other companies just do things "good enough".
For a gaming platform meant to be affordable it's necessary. I'd love having a decked out God console assuming it was still permited to house a wide variety of games both ends of the budget spectrum, but unless you count an overpowered PC with GOG and Steam access that simply won't happen.

Though it can also be frustrating if they don't push that extra mile in an area that might matter a lot, like Ram.

No. This is a video-game system. You increase install-base by having games. Remember DS vs PSP? PSP had an analog stick. DS did not. Also, Pokemon.

That lack of quality software is really the X-factor that's keeping Sony on top of the portable market.

More specifically quality software with mass appeal. There's definitely plenty of great stuff on Vita, more arguably than the 3DS had at this point (and some might even argue right now), but the likes of Uncharted and WipEout don't appeal to as many as Mario and Pokemon, and worse yet most of those that they appeal to would rather play the games on consoles. In the end a similar target is being satisfied with Vita as with the PSP: those who like Sony properties enough and value portability over visual fidelity (or just value the games most period), and those who like niche Japanese games.

There is quality software on the Vita though. There's just nothing with the pull of Mario or Pokemon on the Vita. Nor is it a staus symbol like the iPad/phone.
