3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Does it not mean "factually"? Because, as I was saying, if you look at the ratings of the games at that point in the 3DS's life and this point in the Vita's life, you'd see that Vita's lineup is objectively better.

That's still not what objectively means.

Vita games objectively have higher scores than 3DS games at this point. That doesn't mean Vita games are objectively better. There's a distinction.

Reviews are subjective. They are people giving their opinions on things. Compiling a bunch of opinions together doesn't suddenly become fact, it just gives you a trend of what people's opinions tend to be.

It is impossible for something to be objectively better. It is a contradiction.

And because "The average score" for Vita games and 3DS games include bottom of the barrel games that bring down the average and aren't even in consideration by the average player, trying to use reviewer scores to inform your purchase is even less valid.

In related news, it pains me when people try to put an objective standard on opinion

edit: Is the 3DS to 3DSXL jump anywhere near the size of the DSi to DSiXL jump? How much larger is the 3DSXL to the DSiXL? I'm assuming it's not too much more so. If that's the case it might explain the amount of fidelity retained in comparison from the 3DSXL to the DSiXL

Another french video preview that says games look great on the XL, nothing like the DS XL loss of definition. I have sadly no time to translate it, but they say 3D is vastly improved on the 3DS XL, sounds awesome:

http://www.jeuxvideo.com/reportages...012-a-la-decouverte-de-la-3ds-xl-00001013.htm

The more video footage I see of the games on the XL the more I understand their meaning when they claim it breathes new life into previously released 3DS games. Can't wait to play Zelda and Mario on the much much bigger screens.

Man as much as I want to fault this machines timing, price, single stick, ugly design, lack of adapter and dock..... I see those glorious screens in action and know I'm buying day 1!

I'm definitely part of the problem :( / :)

Not sure if this point has been mentioned already: not selling the AC adapter with every console is better for the environment.

I'm not trying to defend their decision, but if Nintendo think there is a sizeable amount of potential buyers that already have the adapter, why would they package them with every unit? It might be more convenient for consumers, but it's also a waste of resources for a device that, in the end, will just become electronic waste anyway.

Some mobile phones don't come with a charger anymore, because micro USB chargers are so ubiquitous. I'd have less issue with Nintendo leaving out a charger if they'd kept the same plug as DS and DS lite - you could argue that many households buying 3DSXL would already have at least one charger. But they changed the plug so it's the same as DSi and 3DS. There aren't nearly as many of those in circulation so Nintendo should still include a charger in the pack

My enjoyment > People's bitching.

I'd have one now if I could.

Same day as NSMB? Sold. Twice.

There is a big fat warning label on the box that states that the AC adapter/charger is not included. I really don't see this becoming a problem. Yes, not including the charger is annoying but from a business perspective completely understandable.

You'd need online stores to flag this up to people, they won't see the packaging clearly enough to read a notice there

I think I probably paid that (or even more) for the launch 3DS.

I paid £220 for my launch 3DS. I sold it to gamestation late last year for £160 cash, when I was desperate.

My current 3DS was a brand new console that was traded in to my old Blockbuster store that I managed, after a customer got it free with a phone contract. Cost me £70 after staff discount. CEX currently offer £69 cash trade in on it - so I'm not that bothered, really. But yeah - at the time of launch, I was prepared to pay as much as I did because it was a brand new console.

Do you guys think amazon will handle the 3DS XL the same way they have been handling the 3DS? Only having third parties sell it from their sites?

I don't know I'd love to order one from Amazon.

When can I preorder in the US!? Mario 3D Land will be awesome on this! And Ocarina master quest! Both some of my favorite games from last year.

I drank the Nintendo kool-aid and I'm feelin' good.

You can already pre-order from Game Stop or BestBuy.com If you want to pre-order from Amazon I wouldn't hold my breath.

Last year Amazon stopped selling ALL Nintendo hardware, and nobody really knows why since nobody in the press cares to look into it... occasionally we'll get a thread on GAF about it. It was speculated it was because of 3DS returns(screen scratching issues)... but since they stopped selling all Nintendo hardware it seems like it might be a some other problem between Amazon and Nintendo. Also when they stopped selling Nintendo hardware they also put up a chart called Handheld Console Choices on the Nintendo product pages directly comparing the tech specs of Nintendo handhelds to Sony handhelds, that chart is not present on any of the Sony product pages, just the Nintendo ones.

Lots of people didn't even notice or care (the press probably included) because you could still buy Nintendo hardware on Amazon through 3rd party sellers. Though, Amazon recently started selling the Wii again a few weeks ago, so who knows whats going on.

I just got a 3DS again one day before this announcement...Not sweating it though, I love the Purple color, and the feel of the smaller 3ds is great. I traded in the DSIXL to get the 3DS, and immediately noticed how comfortable the smaller 3DS is versus the XL.

I think I'll be fine staying with this one...The 3D effect might be marginally better on the XL, but nothing like on a 60inch LED...So I don't think it's that big of a deal.

BTW, the 3DS is excellent for pick up and play games...I missed Nintendo, Mario Kart is just awesome, and I have really enjoyed the Resident Evil Revelations demo, will probably pick that up soon.

You know what my favourite thing about the 3DS XL is?

The fact that the top part of the console is pretty much 90% screen apart from the space the speakers take up. In that french video, it's impressive as fuck just due to that fact. Playing on my 3DS earlier, it's become more obvious to me that the surrounding black area around the screen makes it seem much smaller than it actually is. The XL will be the absolute opposite - having less of a surround will make it seem even larger. Exactly the same technique I use when framing my photography/artwork.

That is what bothered me the most about the 3DS, there was space there to make the screen a little bigger. With this one, I can't really say they could make the screen bigger.

From a business perspective you're right, but as a consumer I'm expecting the charger to be included.

Maybe the should not include the 4GB SD-card, that makes more sense to me than not including a charger. I can't imagine anyone accepting a new phone without a charger, so why accept this?

If they were going to be cheap they should have at least included a USB cable like Apple do with iPods.

It's not limited to the 3DS. Amazon doesn't carry the 3DS, the DSi, or the DSi XL anymore. Not only that, but they also list the old MSRP for the DSi and XL and allow third party sellers to claim they're selling it for less than MSRP, when in fact they're now selling it for 10-30 dollars over MSRP. It's pretty shady. I called Amazon about them allowing this and they said something along the lines of "Well, maybe they bought the units at the original MSRP." As if that means a damn thing when it comes to Amazon presenting the MSRP to their customers.

Good idea, they're more practical in many ways. More portable to carry around with you (if you have electronics you probably have a USB charger socket anyway)

Exactly, my Revelations is ready. I'm still missing some Medals anyway.

Oh I'm fully agree that not including the charger is pretty stupid but it isnt anything new. How long ago was it that they didnt include cables when buying a printer?

I still can't really decide whether to get a DSi XL or the 3DS XL when it's out. I can't really justify the DSi XL if it's just 40 bucks less then the 3ds XL but damn the DSi looks sexy, would love the 3ds in that exact design.

Also I'm mostly looking at the DS game libary at the moment but it would be kind of silly to not use the backwards compatibility of the 3ds and be able to play both systems.

Tough decisions... Guess I wait till I get my hands on a 3ds xl to see how I like it.

The fact that the NA colors are so ugly is making things easier for me. We'll see how I hold up when it actually arrives.

Yeah, I think I'm going to get this just to see if it's less fussy and more comfortable than the current 3DS. I would've liked better colors, though. Will probably wait for white or some other neutral solid color. =\

Guess you're right, but it's not acceptable these days. And, I'm confused... Nintendo normally does an awesome when releasing hardware and the fact that they even included a 2 GB SD-card with the original 3DS was a very pleasent surprise. Anyway, I think quite a few people are gonna feel kinda ripped off.

Because this is mostly selling to an audience that already owns a DSi, XL or 3DS? I'm happy to benefit from the saving given that I have three chargers already. They'll still be available separately for those who need them. Going without an SD card is pretty unthinkable, though - especially given the camera feature and the fact that Nintendo wants to push the eShop more than ever. Removing the SD card discourages day one downloads.

The DSI XL and 3DS XL are 70 dollars different. 130 vs 200.

Nintendo recently uploaded a short vid with a quick comparison.

Thanks, I haven't see that video yet

What's that big square shaped hole to the left of the charger port for?

Could it possibly be a power OUTPUT port so the "Circle Pad Pro XL" doesn't need batteries?

Unfortunatly not in teh eu, it's 160 vs. 200 here. Btw how much is the DSi (non xl) in the states? Because that one is sold at 130 here.

Oh I'm sorry. I was thrown off by your use of the word "bucks". Didn't realize that term was used outside of the states.

DSi is 99 in the states.

It looks really close to the bottom of the unit so it could be another lanyard hole.

Don't hesitate with the bolded.

About the Jeuxvideo.com preview, they say the bigger screen puts an end to losing the sweet spot if you move your hands or your head. They say it's a big difference with the original 3DS.

That alone is worth purchasing a different version of the 3DS. I love having the 3D on, but damn, that shit pisses me off sooooooo much.

Don't think it is, I'm just using it for whatever currency I'm referring to at that moment ;)

I definitly couldn't resist at that price. I guess I have to find out whether someone I know is going to the states in the near future and get me one.
