what is the secret to not getting permanently banned from NeoGAF.com?

I don't think I have ever entered into conversation with a mod. I don't know how people argue with them.

Gaming side doesn't get my blood boiling at all. There is way too much contrariness over there to take anything remotely serious.

Ehh... It's not really that hard methinks, just don't be offensive to other posters and don't be an asshole. If there's a thread topic with posters opinions that infuriate you just don't post in that thread.

But what if they're wrong?

did you ever see Kittonwy? rawr.
Aw man, I miss him.

let's be serious. it's not about one's political ideology. it's whether the poster has the ability to argue cogently and not resort to repeated ad hominem attacks that counts. playing the victim card is so lazy.
You realize that virtually every single argument can (and will) be described away into 'logical fallacies' by the person who disagrees with it? It's become the Internet equivalent of a kid yelling, "That doesn't count!"

As others have said, the best way to not get banned is to not post at all. One mod might have no problem with your post while another wants to, and does, ban you for it.

This is not really accurate. While moderators might split one way or the other on a post (one might go for a warning, one might delete posts contributing to a derail, one might go for a short ban--all three would agree the post in question is just awful), in general, most of the moderation we do, we work together on. It's not like ten years ago where the place was a bit of a wild west. We're pretty tightly knit. And in many cases, especially for longer bans or identifying long-term problem posters, we work together. It's a really good team.

I'm a softie and I'm sure the other moderators will tell you that, but by and large none of them are going to undermine me and I'm not going to undermine them specifically because it's a collaborative process and we've got channels to help each other give input on stuff.

I studied the fuck out of the TOS for 4 years before I was approved.

I know it front and back but still have no idea who or what N***** B*** is...

I have no idea either, apparently some meme about a female bodybuilder or something? I understand it was a thing like, years and years before I registered. I don't really think it's on our radar at this point.

I love the insight you give us, including stats about the inner workings. Praise Stump.

Did it ever pain you to ban someone?

Not directed at me, but answering anyway. I remember banning a user once who made a (to me) incredibly hilarious, but also incredibly offensive joke. It derailed the entire thread like nobody's business. Had to ban because it was really over the line, but man, I laughed so hard. :X

I saw a post in a thread having to do with that Aliens guy hiring for an assistant. Man, one guy posted just such a joke. I saluted the guy, I'm glad it wasn't perma!

How do the length of bans work? Usually I hear the same things 1 week, 2 weeks, a month etc. Do mods have to choose one or do they just make up a number.

And what's the longest you can get banned for outside of the obvious perma ban?
